Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.8 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wtianseter on 8/4/2023 & rated 93 points: A huge wine that still has everything strung up tight. I decanted for an hour, and it had barely loosened up. Black cherry, dark plum, dark chocolate, smoke are some of the flavors. It is big throughout and the finish has a medium weight tannin which is very dry with a sweet edge. (921 views)
Tasted by denniswdern@gmail.com on 6/10/2023 & rated 88 points: A massive, heavily extracted wine. Not quite my “cup of tea”, so to speak.

Deep ruby/purple color. Minimal fading around the edge, even after 9 years. Medium aroma intensity. Dark aromas … blackberry, smoke, licorice. Little to no red fruit.

Medium to big, chewy tannins. Full bodied. High alcohol. Flavors of black fruit, licorice, stewed plums. Long finish. (893 views)
Tasted by tbrader on 11/19/2022 & rated 96 points: Holds nothing back. Ripe, concentrated. Alcohol content is typical Napa high, but the impression is not hot. Rich blackberry fruit, creme de cassis, loamy earth. Licorice kick on the finish. (1509 views)
Tasted by yaCellar on 10/22/2022 & rated 94 points: So. Much. Fruit. Almost trips over itself. Domineering. (1562 views)
Tasted by Darwine on 4/25/2022 & rated 96 points: A beautiful Napa Cab! Nose was very aeromatic with cedar, tobacco and dark fruit. Flavors of bright cherry - red and black, currants and black raspberry. Great balance of nice tannins and acid with a dry finish of dark fruit, tobacco and leather. (2009 views)
Tasted by swoop71 on 10/9/2021 & rated 96 points: Exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon. Solid aeromatics with a bouquet and tasting notes of red cherry and blackberry. Rich, full bodied mouthfeel with mixed spice including tobacco, anise and leather, followed by a long, savory finish with hints of white cracked pepper. Well integrated tannins and balanced acidity from start to finish. Excellent experience drinking this Cab now but probably has another 5 to 7 years in the bottle. (2218 views)
Tasted by BeansTheDestroyer on 12/26/2020 & rated 96 points: Bright and smooth. (2850 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 11/14/2020 & rated 96 points: WOTN - Wine of the Night - Deep garnet-purple color, full-bodied, firmly structured yet perfectly balanced and silky smooth, elegant and polished, full concentrated black berry fruits with notes of crème de cassis, graphite, hints of cigar box and what Robert Parker described as tree bark turning to a long sinewy spicy oak laced finish.

 Tasted by Kmccafferty01 on 7/6/2020: Actually a 2013 (2753 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 8/29/2019 & rated 90 points: Two and a half hour decant. Very deep dark magenta color. Gala apple peel, dried strawberry, and butterscotch hard candy on the brooding, faded fruit nose. Very smooth, dry palate, with tongue coating acidity. Full, crushed velvety tannins on the very long finish.

This wine is in a very shy phase of its evolution. It’s quite delicate at the moment. (3871 views)
Tasted by Eriklars on 12/8/2018 flawed bottle: Awful (4160 views)
Tasted by UFGators on 5/17/2018 & rated 98 points: Huge dark fruit with lots of tannic structure. Easily the best hall to drink right now. Perfect with a ribeye. Drink or hold. (4715 views)
Tasted by sean7711 on 4/23/2018 & rated 95 points: Napa Weekend; 4/20/2018-4/23/2018 (Napa): Part of private tasting at Hall Rutherford. Paired with veal terrine & 5 year aged cheddar. Again, struggle on QPR at $200+ given all the options at that price point but that shouldn't be a sleight on this wine. It was clearly above the 2015 Bergfeld and 2015 Veeder - showed ability to be ready to drink now, but has the backbone to age another 5-10. (4797 views)
Tasted by big.cactus34 on 1/7/2018 & rated 95 points: A line up of 2014 Bergfeld, 2014 Mt. Veeder, 2014 Exzellenz, 2014 K Hall and 2013 Bishop (Platinum) at the winery’s Private Tasting. All decanted for about an hour except for the Bishop which had several hours of air.

Mostly sourced from the Sacrashe vineyard – intense dark fruit with sweet toasty oak, dusty/chalky notes, olives, savory smoked/seasoned meat, highly tannic – excellent wine that will improve with age. (95+) (4482 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 1/5/2018 & rated 95 points: Two hours sitting in the glass before drinking. Lilac, plum, boysenberry, blackberry and toasted baking spice on the expressive nose. Smooth palate and full, long finish. (3704 views)
Tasted by Audott on 11/15/2017: Member allocation (3788 views)
Tasted by 82Latour on 10/30/2016 & rated 95 points: A decade of exzellenz: 95-98 pts, barrel sample. 2014 was an early vintage coming in with ripe soft tannins. Approachable, yet structured. Caramel, cinnamon, sweet and supple. More approachable than 2013. (4626 views)

Hall

Producer website
Since first working in her family’s Mendocino vineyards, Kathryn Hall dreamed of a place to showcase fine wines alongside expressive art and masterful architecture. Now, Kathryn and Craig Hall are creating an unrivalled destination
in the Napa Valley—where winemaking excellence meets contemporary design to celebrate life and inspire the senses. In 2005, Craig and Kathryn Hall unveiled a state-of-the-art winery amid the legendary Sacrashe Vineyard in the hills
of Rutherford that is dedicated to making single vineyard and limited-production wines. The Halls acquired the historic Bergfeld winery in St. Helena in 2003, and are merging history and innovation with the completion of California's
First Winery to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Certification.

HALL’s estate vineyards encompass more than five hundred acres of classic Bordeaux varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.
As winegrowers, the Halls have a strong respect for the environment and a commitment to cutting-edge vineyard technology to yield the highest quality grapes.
Through meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards, HALL wines are able to express the unique and diverse character of Napa Valley’s soils and climate.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
