HISTORY OF THE OLD BASTARD
For over 15 years, Kaesler Owner and Winemaker Reid Bosward has been consistently producing this age-worthy wine from his ancient vineyard at Kaesler.
Planted in 1893, this vineyard was a secret stash of supercharged Shiraz grapes used by other Barossa wineries for their super premium reds and fortified for over 100 years. It was only when he moved to the Barossa and heard of the remarkable qualities of this special vineyard that he managed to get his hands on some of the grapes and made the first Old Bastard. He then made an offer to purchase the vineyard, and that is how Kaesler Old Bastard born.
After producing this wine for almost 20 years, we are fortunate to have a dedicated group of serious collectors around Australia and overseas who have been purchasing Old Bastard for just as long. But as the word gets out about the consistency and longevity of Old Bastard, we developed an allocation programme. This way Reid could guarantee supply of Old Bastard to our longest and most loyal customers before we offer to the rest around the world.
THE VINEYARD
This revered 2.5 acre (12 row) vineyard consists of 125 year old vines and is less than 100 metres from the back door of the winery. It truly is one of the best patches of Shiraz vines in the Barossa, featuring a unique clone of Shiraz (now extinct in France) with its own unique flavour characteristics and profile. This is what makes the Old Bastard what it is.
THE WINEMAKING
Consistent wine making since 1998, superb vineyard management and the highest quality Burgundian oak – this is a wine that lets the fruit do the talking. It’s absolutely fruit driven to the core and supported by the best oak.
The Old Bastard vineyard was planted in 1893, and there are just 2.5 acres of these magnificent old vineyards. Volume is purely dictated by the quality of grapes produced each season.

What Reid really brought to the table is old-word techniques they don’t teach in today’s wine making schools such as how to bring out the best in old vines and how to manage the vineyard.
WHAT THE CRITICS SAY
The Old Bastard has received consistently high ratings by some the world’s most prominent wine critics. James Halliday gave the 2012 a rating of 98 points and it listed as exceptional by Langtons.
