Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Triforwine on 12/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Delicious Barolo, taken to restaurant and did not require much decant time to open and be a lovely pair with Italian food. In a good drinking window and will get better. 93+ (958 views)
Tasted by Handy1 on 7/12/2023 & rated 92 points: From magnum. Decanted half the bottle for several hours and rest few hours before consumption. Some floral notes on the nose. Cherry predominately on the palate with some strong tannins. Needs more time but very good potential (1530 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 4/11/2023 & rated 95 points: Two hours in the glass for this to really blossom. Lavender, roses, tar and sweet spice.
Fine tannins, great mouthfeel and long finish. Hard to describe the pallet, so much going on. Sweet spice, sour cherry, ash, tar and minerals come to mind. My first experience with this producer and this was excellent. Don't know if I would pay the current price but would definitely grab some more at the sub 100 I paid. Really nice barolo just hitting its stride. (1794 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 4/9/2023 & rated 94 points: Lättare Barolo, väldigt stilig, men har mer att ge.
Tasted by Yassine23 on 1/8/2023: Too young at this stage, tannins are very firm and needs a serious amount of air time to open up and soften the structure a bit. Has thrown a good bit of sediment as well so decanting will help both with air and with sediment. None the less, great wine that is already lovely to drink but will reward extensive cellaring. (1932 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 10/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Testa mot Sandrone Le Vigne 2013, båda extremt bra men olika karraktär. (2150 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 9/14/2022 & rated 96 points: Quite a beautiful wine with a nice history for me - in 2013 my wife and I both walked the Cannubi vineyard and had the pleasure of tasting some 2008s with Chiara Boschis. As to the wine - it’s highly perfumed, was light bodied on opening with elegant precision and a refined, silky mouth feel. The nose is menthol, earth, tobacco and old wood. In the mouth, the flavors are classic - pine, tobacco, not-quite-ripe cherry and an earthen oakiness that is quite appealing. Well balanced wine, with fine, tight tannins and firm acidity. Some balsamic cherry on a very long finish. This wine is a real gem. (2150 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 2/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Prominent Barolo nose - menthol, cherry, and more menthol. A hint of tar but not much. Beautiful. Some old wood. Opening up for business - tart, fine tannins, cherry with cherry pit tartness. The tannins, regrettably, shut down the finish early. My impression is this wine should wait at least another 3 years. But it’s impressive. (2566 views)
Tasted by Triforwine on 10/17/2021 & rated 93 points: This wine is young but entering a very nice early drinking window now. Gorgeous light crimson color that darkens a bit with time in the decanter. Great right from the first pour but some of the complexity comes out with air, the longer the better but worth tasting a little on first pour for sure. Great floral aroma and almost cotton candy, minty nose on opening with tart red fruit, cherry of different types on tasting to add to this. Some hints of rhubarb perhaps. Somewhat puckering tannins so when these resolve more fully the wine can improve even more; almost endless finish not marred too much by the lingering tannin. Very small clump of sediment in the bottom. Just delicious and I’m glad I tried it. Wait another year or two for the next one. Enormous potential. Outstanding wine. 93++ (2667 views)
Tasted by JS79 on 7/7/2020 & rated 93 points: 67 PM Barolo boys with Federico Moccia and Nelson Pari

Floral candied fruit, blackberry/cherry nose, confirmed on the palate with menthol edge. Fruit really full. Definitely want to ty more. (3808 views)
Tasted by CrocodileCab on 5/4/2019 & rated 93 points: Excellent wine. Quite heavy. Still tightly wound but very much drinkable with some time in the decanter. Wish I had more. Will last for many years still. (4703 views)
Tasted by djarcara on 1/18/2019 & rated 93 points: Deep garnet color. Lovely perfumed nose of roses and blackberries. Still very tannic, primary and young. Yet, it has an elegance underneath the firm balanced structure. Flavors of dark cherry, licorice, and red peppercorn. This is a classic Barolo that has at least 15+ years ahead of it before any decline. Indeed it is probably 3 year before it hits its drinking window. 14% abv. (4706 views)
Tasted by InternationalWineReport on 10/18/2018 & rated 96 points: The 2013 Cannubi is a simply magical wine from Chiara Boschis in this vintage. Elegant and refined, this Barolo opens to striking aromas of cherries and sweet red berries which are laced by fresh floral, mint and hints of exotic spices, all taking shape in this stunning wine. Medium-bodied, this displays remarkable overall balance and finesse with excellent poise. The finish is long and precise as it leaves a lasting impression. An absolute beautiful wine which will last decades. (Best 2020-2035) (5073 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 3/26/2018: Not rated as my recollection is insufficient, open this five days ago and remember it being very good sweet bright red fruited, then had it last night after getting back from wine country and it was a little hot, I think this has a chance to turn into a real gem but not 100% sure, if you’re patient you should wait at least 10 years and 20 would be better (5520 views)
Tasted by Sundbyberg on 12/3/2017 & rated 93 points: My second cannubi by this producer (previously 2007).
A very good barolo and quite a resemblance with the Aldo Conterno Cicala 2013 I had the other day. A bit short on the typical Cannubi perfume.
As said, very good, but I must say that the AC Cicala was substantially better. (5447 views)
Tasted by Bluespolo on 11/3/2017 & rated 94 points: Nota rapida da degustazione in azienda. (4476 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/1/2017 & rated 96 points: Tasted next to 2013 Via Nuova and 2013 Mosconi. The most impressive of those three today and an absolute highlight at this tasting. Quite complex on the nose already - floral notes, spices, herbs. Layered, generous fruit on the palate. Super balance with great acidity and powerful, but ripe tannins. Impressive finish. Needs time. I can’t wait to see how this will age. 95-96+ (4318 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/8/2017: Different than earlier this year, this seems like it's already headed into a deep sleep phase. DO NOT touch this for several years. Could be bottle variation, but I don't think so. HOLD. Drink 2024-2041

Tasted by hajoha on 7/17/2017 & rated 93 points: Drukket på Osteria More e Macine i La Morra.
(3758 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 7/8/2017 & rated 94 points: Medium (+) ruby. The nose is clean, complex, medium (+) in intensity, with aromas of red cherry, violet and rose potpourri, mint and aromatic herbs, cigar box and subtle sweet baking spices. The nose is fresh, youthful and very graceful. The palate is dry, with medium (+) acidity, medium (+) tannins and medium (+) to high alcohol (14%). Full-bodied yet very well balanced and lithe, with intense flavors and a long finish. This Barolo is drinking remarkably well for being this young. It is likely to reward several years of bottle aging with increased complexity and can probably last indefinitely thanks to its structure. (3227 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 5/5/2017 & rated 93 points: Smakt hos produsenten ( som forøvrig var et fantastisk besøk).
Nydelig parfymert nese.
(3220 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 4/12/2017: A pretty serious Cannubi, with plenty of quality raw material, and enough structure to age for a few decades; likely, gracefully. That said, this will require patience. If you have several, and you're curious, go ahead and open one, I think it's important to see this in its youth - there's a lot to admire. If you do open one, you'll likely choose to open the next one 7-10 years later, when it will no doubt be even more complete; I see this ageing very slowly. A lot to like here. HOLD. highly recommended

Tasted by Eric Guido on 2/2/2017 & rated 96 points: This is a chameleon of a wine, with a bouquet that showed medicinal herb, raspberry, at times almost dark syrupy, then turning to black cherry, balsamic tones, giving way to minerals, dusty exotic spices and earth. On the palate, I found silky textures (very textural and dark - almost imposing at times) and dark red fruits which coated the wine’s fine tannin and saturated the senses over time. It was imposing and intense on the long finish, as fine grain tannin coated the senses, yet it’s wonderfully balanced. This should have some future in store. (3473 views)

E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis)

Producer website

Source: VinConnect
Chiara Boschis is widely recognized as one of the first women producers in Barolo, though she comes from eight generations of winemakers. In 1981, the Boschis family acquired the E. Pira & Figli estate, occupying some of the most prestigious land in Barolo. In 1990, Chiara took over the operation on her own, bringing dedication, charm, patience and determination to every aspect of production in order to raise the quality and image of the winery to that which it enjoys today. In 2010, Chiara’s younger brother Giorgio decided to join her, contributing a wealth of experience both in the vineyards as well as in the cellar.

Chiara is an artisan grower, whose philosophy is to craft wines that combine the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, balance, intense aromatics, and elegance. This equilibrium is achieved through strict vineyard management (all work is carried out manually), careful selection, organic farming practices and meticulous vinification techniques that favor a gentle touch, allowing the grapes to express their true character. She is a farmer first. Chiara then unites the best of traditional and modern winemaking techniques in a continuous endeavor to consistently produce high quality wines representative of their heritage.

Chiara has a very limited production of about 1,200 cases of Barolo each year. Her wines are made exclusively from the 6.5 hectares (16 acres) of proprietary vineyards in Barolo (Cannubi, Liste and Terlo), Monforte d’Alba (Mosconi, Ravera and Le Coste) and Serralunga d’Alba (Gabutti). Currently two single-vineyard Barolo wines are produced, Cannubi and Via Nuova, though a third (Mosconi) will be added to the line up in 2013. Chiara also produces three traditional Piedmont reds: Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba and Nebbiolo d’Alba.

“As one of the few women winemakers in the area, I wanted to produce a Barolo, a very strong and powerful wine, that showed a bit of its elegant side as well.” – Chiara Boschis

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
