Tasted by Hi.its.Don.4.Wine on 12/28/2019 & rated 90 points: By sheer coincident, I brought a bottle of the Rombauer Cabernet Sauvignon “Diamond Selection” 2014 to a friend’s house to share, she had the same wine but from 1998, a perfect opportunity to compare.

Of interest first was that the 1998 was actually made from grapes from the Armstrong Ranch Vineyard on Diamond Mountain whereas 2014 shows coming from estate vineyards and top grower vineyards in St. Helena (50%), Stags Leap, (20%) and Calistoga (30%) AVAs. From what I could gather, Armstrong Ranch is privately owned and no longer sells to Rombauer.

My first comment upon tasting both was that they did have similar flavor profiles, the 1998 obviously being more muted than and not as fresh as 2014. I could find no reviews on the 1998 wine, only vintage notes, which showed a mediocre vintage at best. I wanted to be more hopeful being mountain fruit, but sadly, while drinkable, the wine had little to display; dried plums, one-dimensional flavor, and a finish that was lacking. I did find one very good review for the 2014 at 93 Points and upon tasting, the wine did, as mentioned, have a livelier component and slightly fresher but still a dried fruit (not quite so plummy) taste. The finish showed a little more acidity and a faint spice note as well. Considering the cost, I would have liked to be more “wowed.”

I should point out that both wines were tasted both upon opening and over a three to four hour time frame, with little discernable changes, especially of the 1998, maybe somewhat for 2014.
For reference, I’ve posted this same review on both wines.

Tasted by tc from santee on 8/26/2019 & rated 92 points: As RP said, this Cab. is soft, supple with a long finish. It is however border on a Cabernet Port. But delicious. Drink by 2022. (1113 views)

Tasted by Kbentley007 on 6/2/2019 & rated 92 points: Gave it a 2hr decant. Still young but I'm impatient today and wanted to try. Will save second bottle for back half of the drinking window. (821 views)
Tasted by srh on 12/8/2018: Big Gun Cabernet Sauvignon/Bordeaux Blends Tasting (7/9 CA from Napa, + 1 WA) (San Diego Wine Co.): "A reserve bottling representing the best lots harvested each growing season." 94% C.S. & 6% Petit Verdot from the St. Helena (50%), Stags Leap (20%), & Calistoga (30%) AVAs; "Destemmed & optically sorted; Primarily barrel-fermented, then gently basket-pressed before being racked to FR oak barrels (100% new) for malolactic fermentation & aging for 16 mos." 27.0 ave brix @ harvest & 14.8% ABV; Released October 2017

N: Slightly closed; Creamy oak with notes of smoke atop berries/pyrazines; Intensitly lurking?

P: LM body; Rndish entry with NICE, almost swtish frt met by some puckerish astringency which SOMEWHAT resolves by the LONG finish with a tangy/swtness & POSS a burgeoning quasi-bitter flatness to the dusty tannins? Deserves/NEEDS through '20, then approaching its 10th. My EXC-/EXC, certainly the higher IF the finish resolves rather than slides. 93 pts ea WS, kenswineguide.com, & WE @ $100, and 90 ea WA & Decanter's Panel. [This vendor's $79.99 puts it in the TOP 10% of wine-searcher's postings.] (1337 views)
Tasted by WineBurrowingWombat on 7/28/2018 & rated 92 points: Nose: Smells like a chocolate port, subtle scents of vanilla and deep brooding dark/black fruit.

Palate: Very good fruit and lots of it. Very slight and subtle oak (thank goodness). More dark fruits.. almost sweet but in a good way. Has some slight vanilla or cream notes? (Leaning more towards vanilla)

Dark, garnet yet still slightly translucent. Medium bodied and dry with a lot of fruit. Tannins are there but they are smooth against the mouth. Good finish of about 5-6 seconds. This really surprised me.. I've never liked their Chardonnay but this took me by surprise. Lots of fruit and almost sweet in a sense but it's still dry. Very enjoyable. Approachable and well made. Now I'm looking forward to try their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. (1638 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
