Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by gmbdds on 2/22/2023 & rated 91 points: Fruit forward for N. Rhône with plum, cherry and blackberry. Also savory with olive and herbal notes. Fresh, racy acidity balances the big flavors well. (869 views)
Tasted by goodvitis.com on 2/14/2023 & rated 92 points: The nose is an intriguing combination of savory (hickory, bacon, sage, desert brush) and fruit (cherry, plum, pomegranate). Nearly full bodied, the acid is juicy and moderators the densely grained gritty tannin, which has barely started to resolve. It’s structurally pleasant but I think will hit a more elegant stride texturally in five years. Flavors include cherry, red and black plums, smoked soy sauce umami, sautéed sage, and dried seaweed. I wouldn’t blame anyone for putting bottles of these down now, but we’re going to sit on our second bottle for five years to see if the structure smooths out and elongates. (754 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 1/7/2023 & rated 89 points: Yummy stuff - vibrant and open with black raspberry flavor predominating with a bit of tart cherry fading to a lovely minerality. Medium-minus acidity still carries a lovely finish. Quite nice. (928 views)
Tasted by wayfarer on 1/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Drinking perfectly. Opened 1 hour, no decant needed. Great darker red and black fruit, bit of mineral, leather, plum. Balanced, moderate long, deceptive graceful richness. (832 views)
Tasted by daveyk39 on 11/6/2022 & rated 90 points: Interesting, atypical Northern Rhône. Deep purple color, offers plum, black currant, cedar, new leather, clove. Silky texture, juicy red and black fruit with echoes of cedar on the palate. Medium-bodied, slightly lean, with polished tannins. Not what I was expecting, but quite nice for what it is. (1055 views)
Tasted by bwillia on 2/26/2022 & rated 87 points: Exceptionally light and atypical. (1127 views)
(1234 views)
Tasted by phil the agony on 4/3/2021 & rated 91 points: Aucune note prise (1971 views)
Tasted by lambomiura on 3/18/2021 & rated 92 points: Superbe rapport qualité prix. Mûres framboises réglisse anis , ample, fin et long. (1788 views)
Tasted by ziavino on 11/5/2020 & rated 92 points: This is the antithesis of big, ripe Cosme wines from the Southern Rhone (which I also love). Juicy acidity throughout, and the fruit is almost secondary with light notes of black raspberry framed by classic notes of white pepper. Gets pleasantly funky on the nose with air time, and while not meaty on the palate per se, a nice sanguine note starts to emerge. A classy expression of St. Joseph. (1984 views)
Tasted by Wine2372 on 8/29/2020 & rated 91 points: Lean raspberry and blackberry, sleek and balanced, with nice structure, medium tannins, and a hint of oak. A young N. Rhone with its best years ahead, drinking with character at 5 years. Good QPR. (1803 views)
Tasted by Androurse on 8/5/2020 & rated 90 points: The wine looks purple colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis) and plum. It tastes like blackberry, black currant (cassis), oak and vanilla. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity. (1741 views)
Tasted by salarvcj on 8/2/2020 & rated 90 points: Lovely Northern Rhône, blackberries and raspberries on the nose rich blackberry flavour, good depth and soft tannins. Drinking beautifully now, still primary but really enjoyable and great value (1211 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 11/16/2018: Tim's. Really good. Absolutely bench mark style St. Joe and a good cellar candidate. (2343 views)
Tasted by phil the agony on 4/27/2018 & rated 89 points: Légère reduction au premier nez.
89+ ?? (2619 views)
Tasted by Villon on 4/27/2018 & rated 90 points: Nez marqué par la réduction. 90+ (2860 views)
 Tasted by Avicenne on 3/25/2018 & rated 92 points: SAQ N° 13166982 36$
Texture soyeuse, longueur satisfaisante.
Chaudement recommandé. Peut encore s'améliorer les 5-6 prochaines années.

Tasted by danstrings on 3/8/2018 & rated 89 points: Inky dark, lovely glaceed dark fruit upon opening at a cool cellar temp - did get a bit more heavy and "hot" when it warmed up a bit too much in a stuffy (but good) restaurant (2538 views)
Tasted by Motz on 1/17/2018 & rated 91 points: Tasted over two days.

Disclaimer: Do not pop and pour this. It needs to breathe for several hours.

Without air: wholly underwhelming. With air: saline, meaty, and umami-laden. Very, very young. It needs two or three years to unwind and reveal its substance. Likely to improve. Excellent! 91-92. (2170 views)
Tasted by cpsmith33 on 12/16/2017 flawed bottle: Corked. Bummer. (1243 views)
Tasted by Taco Cellar on 7/31/2017 & rated 86 points: St Joseph, not as nice as the Crozes Hermitage. 2015 St Joseph was better than the 2013 (1776 views)
Tasted by dpolivy on 1/13/2017: Vindredi (Rhone Valley: Gigondas, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage, St. Joseph) (Bellevue, WA): Tasted blind. Yum. Purple fruit, vanilla, violets, plum. Dense, dark fruit on the palate. Really lovely, with a nice saline element on the finish. (2144 views)

Full Pull, Full Pull Saint Saint (6/23/2017)
(Saint Cosme St. Joseph) Hello friends. Louis Barroul is justifiably famous for southern Rhone wines from Saint Cosme’s home base of Gigondas. But ever since I attended a lunch with Monsieur Barroul last summer, I’ve been chasing his wines from the Northern Rhone. The combination of the passion with which he spoke about the region and the outlandish QPR of the wines was completely seductive, and it sent me on this hunt. You might remember that we secured a painfully small parcel of Louis’ 2011 Cote Rotie, so small that we offered it in an Eliminator (December 2016) instead of a regular offer. For today’s wine, our parcel meets the requirements for a prime time slot, but only barely. Seekey for # of bottles currently available.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
