Tasted by bjlcrucrazy on 11/20/2021 & rated 90 points: Really nice wine in a great place, not overly rich, great acidity and balance and paired amazing with bone marrow at Churchill's wine night, Southern Rhone (212 views)
Tasted by Palisades57 on 12/5/2020 & rated 88 points: To me sweet and fat, but this was preferred by some dinner guests to a Ramonet 2016 Macon Peronnes. Go figure. (286 views)
Tasted by srh on 12/14/2019: Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 6 *shared* bottles] from 12/13/19 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): A blend of 40% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette, 20% Roussanne, & 10% Bourboulenc (vines ave 45 yrs old) from up to 4 different parcels of Alpine diluvium, sand, & mainly clay soils; Typically, varieties are fermented apart & aged (in new 228 & 600-L & some 2 -yr-old 300-L oak casks) for 7 mos with lees stirring; Malolactic blocked; ≈400 cases produced.

N: CLOSED; HINTS of lanolin (almost an oiliness?) with apricots POSS underneath?

P: Med body; Very RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish rt met by a balancing acidity which stays in contact with the init frt as it fairly seamlessly evolves into a LONG, balanced finish with an OCCASIONAL *glimpse* of a very, VERY slight bitterness that would likely be a + with food. VERY nicely done for not & poss through '22? 14% ABV; My EXC. 90 pts Decanter (Panel, 5/8/17), 18/20 La Revue du Vin de France, 14/20 Bettane et Desseauve, & 4*/5 + a "What One Wants" from drinkrhone.com (9/'16). [This vendor's $27.95 would appear to be VERY competitive, although, unless they bring in more, this was there last bottle.] (745 views)
Tasted by srh on 11/23/2019: Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 8 *shared* bottles] from 11/22/19 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): A blend of 40% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette, 20% Roussanne, & 10% Bourboulenc (vines ave 45 yrs old) from up to 4 different parcels of Alpine diluvium, sand, & mainly clay soils; Typically, varieties are fermented apart & aged (in new 228 & 600-L & some 2 -yr-old 300-L oak casks) for 7 mos with lees stirring; Malolactic blocked; ≈400 cases produced.

N: CLOSED; Apricots, flowers, poss minerals?

P: Med body; Very RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by acidity which leads the charge into & through the LONG, balanced finish with an intriguing, food friendly, TANGY/swtness (60:40). 1 of the few (if not the 1st) "aged" versions from this AOC I've enjoyed! Drink now & likely through '21. 14% ABV; My VG+/EXC-, the higher QUITE justifiably for QPR from this AOC! 90 pts Decanter (Panel, 5/8/17) & 4*/5 + a "What One Wants" from drinkrhone.com (9/'16). [This vendor's $27.95 would appear to be VERY competitive!] (570 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
