Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by WhooskeyWine on 10/16/2022 & rated 89 points: Medium ruby hue. Aromas of cherry, coffee, earthy, rose, rubber, and sage. Medium-plus body, full tannins, and medium-plus acidity. Lengthy finish. Excellent for food pairings. 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 15% other varietals. (779 views)
Tasted by Nelsongwinn on 8/7/2022 & rated 92 points: Nose of cocoa and red fruit. Hints of orange peel and blackberry. Soft tannins, nice long finish (765 views)
Tasted by Clark W Griswold on 7/8/2022 & rated 88 points: Great nose. Tart Red fruits. On the thinner side. Higher acidity. Earthy. Barnyard. Neither savory or fruity. Decent food wine. Pretty disappointing. (849 views)
Tasted by Nraucourt on 12/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Great wine - well balanced lot of fruit still youthful but good to drink feel quite light for a CdP. (1147 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 9/30/2021 & rated 88 points: this bottle seemed tired, almost over the hill (1310 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 8/25/2021 & rated 90 points: nice and even over two days (842 views)
Tasted by Lanzelot on 3/28/2021 & rated 92 points: deep ruby colored with purple reflexes / nose: intense, red fruits like raspberry, strawberry and red cherries, black currant, coffee, pepper, very little smoke / palate: medium- acidity, medium tannins, full bodied, good length, fruits like dark cherries / overall: a very nice Châteauneuf-du-Pape which is easy drinking. Unfortunately, it was the last bottle. Probably, it is now at the peak. I would drink this wine over the next three years. 8,5/10 (special plus for complexity) (1119 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 7/10/2020 & rated 90 points: Once again there is lots going on in this wine. It is well balanced whereby the acidity, and tannins are in a good spot right now. Intense richness and hedonistic as I found myself gulping a mouthful this with each sip. At the start on the palette I get strawberry, light fresh cherry and rhubarb. The mid palette is fresh cream with strawberry and the finish is pure fruit with fresh acidity and...... boy is this also balanced. This started developing after an hour. Lots more of room to improve. Wait another 2-3 years and decant. (1589 views)
(1407 views)
Tasted by SuperSomm on 4/5/2020: Medium ruby colour. Medium nose with red currant, red cherry, blackcurrant and black pepper. Pronounced taste of red currant, red cherry, green bell pepper, black pepper, licorice, wet stones, leather, tobacco, wet leaves and forest floor. Medium long and dry finish. Medium acidity. Medium tannins. Medium body. A good to very good Châteauneuf-du-Pape that still feels a bit green and young. Should probably rest in the cellar for a couple of more years. Goes well with lamb, poultry, pork or veal. (153 views)
Tasted by BeStewarts on 3/8/2020: Good lil CDP (1229 views)
Tasted by COWineLover on 7/27/2019 & rated 87 points: Nothing special here. Heat, black fruit with iron, chalkiness, and pepper. Simple and straightforward.

There are many basic cuvée CdP that are far better than this. Overall poor QPR.

Half the bottle stored overnight. The wine did not fare any better on day 2. (1829 views)
Tasted by gfwetzel on 4/19/2019 & rated 86 points: Deep garnet in color. Cherries and a whiff of barnyard on the nose. Lightly acidic with reserved tannins. Not a lot of structure. Flavors of cherries, chalk, a hint of menthol (needs more cellaring time). The wine is fairly hot at 14.5% alcohol. (1631 views)
Tasted by Wine Gopher on 2/24/2019 & rated 92 points: M. Chapoutier: Tour of the Rhone (SOBE Wine & Food Festival - Miami Beach): Raspberry and garrigue on the nose. The taste matches the nose with the addition of tobacco and cedar. The flavors are more concentrated than you expect based on the medium weight of the wine. It is very mouth coating and yet relatively light. Long finish. This wine has its best years ahead of it. (1607 views)
Tasted by PT insurgent on 1/26/2019: Nose of strawberry, raspberry, ripe cherry, raisin, prune, menthol, meaty, leather. Tasty wine, ok complexity and depth. (1327 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 11/24/2018 & rated 91 points: Such a big wine and yet so light in color. Balanced and delivers a heat driven Modern Chateuneuf Du Pape. There is lots going on in this wine. Intense richness and hedonistic as I found myself gulping mouthfuls. (1401 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 11/9/2018 & rated 91 points: I found lots going on in this wine. Intense richness and hedonistic as I found myself gulping a mouthful this with each sip. I get that it is a rhone and is expected but boy is this also balanced. This started developing after an hour. Lots of room to improve with firm tannins. (956 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 9/16/2018 & rated 89 points: Decent but I have never been a big fan of this. Dark fruit, spices, alcoholic heat, short finish. Chapoutier is a safer bet in Northern Rhone. (1474 views)
Tasted by RockyII on 8/5/2018 & rated 90 points: 15 min decant at the Palm Beach Grill and drank with dinner over the next 90. Medium translucent cranberry red. Nose of peppermint, tarragon, sandalwood and blackberries. Taste is similar with a nice sweet woodsy profile. Low tannins and medium acidity leave a nice mouthfeel. Gets sweeter (touch of maple syrup) with more airtime. About 89-90. Went well to counterbalance a spicy creole style shrimp dish. (922 views)
Tasted by Martin Redmond on 3/10/2018 & rated 89 points: A Taste of The House of Chapoutier #Winophiles: Color - Crimson red
Aromas - Black cherry, red currant, sandalwood and warm spice aromas
Body - Medium-bodied, harmonious, and fresh with juicy, supple tannins
Taste - Black cherry, red currant, black licorice, black cherry and warm spice flavors
Finish - Medium-long

Blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah|SRP - $60|Sample (1232 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/21/2017 & rated 88 points: The entry level Chateauneuf from Chapoutier offers a medium bodied, forward, sweet, cherry profile. Focused on its fruits ad freshness, over additional nuances, there is still enough peppery goodness with a dose of marjoram in the finish to keep things interesting. (2363 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
