Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 115 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Doanebob on 3/30/2022 & rated 91 points: Needs at least an hour of decanting. Dark fruits emerged on the nose underpinned by a moderate acidity. Tannins have receded but a decent finish. Definately near the end but still satisfying. (1687 views)
Tasted by cbuhlman on 2/21/2022: This wine was really singing tonight.
Excellent terroir driven classified Medoc especially given the hot vintage. Sweet savory cabernet fruit with great balance with a persistent mouthcoating finish-not at all hot.
today showed why La Tour Carnet is a 4th growth.

Tasted by msauer on 11/23/2020 & rated 89 points: Nach Lafontaine Rochet 2000 fiel dieser natürlich kellerkalt geöffnet ab.
Trotzdem sehr solide. Intensive Süße (nicht klebrig), Reife (Brom-)Beeren, wenig Säure, wenig Holz. Durchaus kräftig. Dunkelrot (2685 views)
Tasted by msauer on 11/2/2020 & rated 91 points: animierende Nase
Volle AromaPalette. Warm, reich

Tasted by dave747400 on 8/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted 1 hour, with Comte cheese. As reported in recent notes this wine has really blossomed. Classic Bordeaux notes of damp earth and blackcurrants on the nose. Fully integrated tannins, a little freshening acidity and no noticable oak. No overblown 2003ness. Extremely enjoyable.  Tasted by msauer on 5/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Typische Nase. Masculin, gemäßigte Kraft. Voll. Beerig (2052 views)
Tasted by egoya on 5/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Absolutely delicious right now. We drank our other bottles years ago - we should have waited! (1834 views)
(1548 views)
Tasted by mitalanil on 2/1/2020: Gave to Jamie - 50th (1518 views)
Tasted by kfrench150 on 9/14/2019 & rated 95 points: Possibly my last bottle of this. Pop and pour. Mature black raspberry colour with a very dark slightly garnet rim. Very dark and deep in the glass. Initial subdued nose that needs air and then reveals layers of dark plum, ripe black fig, worn saddle leather, camphor, black tea, tar and lots of graphite, even a touch of black licorice as well. Full bodied and a mouthful of black fruit extract. Fills your entire mouth from front to back with perfectly ripe and lush fruit. Wow! Super smooth. The tannins have completely melted away. Tongue coating black fruits all over the place. Lush and sensuous! Not dried out or raisined at all. Powerful yet supple. This is drinking perfectly right now and man is it sexy! So good! Gulpable. Call me crazy but I'm going with a 95 on this. (1938 views)
Tasted by dprentiss on 3/30/2018 & rated 90 points: Still very fresh, plenty of fruit as well as tannin, so plenty of structure and strength. Stood up well with a spicy leg of lamb and strong vegetables. (3224 views)
Tasted by frankophilius on 8/15/2017 & rated 91 points: Flasch 2 Stunden geöffnet, nicht dekantiert.

(4224 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 8/21/2016 & rated 91 points: Consistent with my note from January. I forgot to put the bottle out of reach, so despite my plan to wait a few more years I drank it over two days. Day 1 a really outstanding and beautiful, perfumed bouquet. This will drink beautifully until 2020 and possibly a bit longer. (5459 views)
Tasted by cbuhlman on 7/18/2016: Wow, this wine really turned around in a positive way. This hot vintage wine that appeared fat and sloppy has become nuanaced yet opulent. Sweet cabernet fruit with smokiness and blueberry jam and leather.
a little weak in structure but very good nonetheless.
a nice finish.

Tasted by Zweder on 1/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Weekly tasting group #199; New years tasting with some young and mature wines (@ My place): Beautiful and classical bouquet with cassis and other dark forest fruits and a pleasant dose of beautiful oak. On the palate cassis and ripe dark forest fruits, some herbs and spices and vanilla, even some graphite, but also good acidity and tannin. Showing some maturity, but in fact by far not tired yet. Beautiful and juicy wine. If properly stored around 2020 this will still be a great pleasure. I have one more bottle and I will try to wait until 2018 at least. (6651 views)
Tasted by joishscellar on 3/28/2015 & rated 94 points: greatly improved and after a couple of hours of decanting - its lip-smacking!! (6611 views)
Tasted by sequoiagrove on 2/6/2015 & rated 93 points: Deep dark red, with hints of amber. Blackcurrant nose. Some sediment. Dark black fruits, earthy, cedar, nice rough tannins. Very good for a french wine, like an overpriced Quantum with some more age. Had it with 2 h decant, and before during and after a good steak. I think it can stand a few more years. (5583 views)
Tasted by mas66 on 1/11/2015 & rated 91 points: som de fleste '03 en rigtig god vin. Årgangen er langt bedre end sit ry…
Animalsk i duften, underskov, blyant
Mørk, saftig, frugtig, mellemlang eftersmag
Rigtig god balance, drikker godt nu og minimum 5 år mere (4799 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 12/9/2014 & rated 89 points: Classic aromatics and drinking very well right now. Not the most complex, but very good. (4772 views)
Tasted by epiphany on 10/19/2014 & rated 90 points: Ripe berry nose with overtones of damp earth and potpourri. Similar flavors with some added leather. Body is medium to full and very dry. Finish is lingering and dry…in a good way. Overall this is drinking very well and should continue for a few years to come. I like it! (4203 views)
Tasted by engelwein on 8/8/2014 & rated 88 points: Sehr netter Wein, ziemlich jung, mittlere Tannine, eher Toscana als Bordeaux, sicher gut trinkbar bis 2020 (3754 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 4/9/2014 & rated 90 points: 1st bottle in 3 years, this has reached a better spot since then with the tannins coming into more balance and harmony. Much more elegant and still youthful aromatically. (4207 views)
Tasted by theusualsuspect on 10/17/2013 & rated 88 points: Again, nice very drinkable Bordeaux - nothing more. But here is what I am learning about 2003's. Opened this 4 days ago, had a glass maybe, put the cork back in and put it in the refrigerator. Tonight once again like the past two nights, another glass, bottle is down to maybe 1/3 - 1/4, the wine is still very drinkable Bordeaux. Similarly - Pagodes de Cos, Faugeres, and others. (4980 views)
 Tasted by BoireBio on 6/28/2013 & rated 81 points: 14/20 *** 42$c

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

Read more about Haut Medoc and its wines Long-standing fame The legally created division into Médoc and Haut-Médoc dates from 1935. But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
