Tasted by NotNYC on 11/21/2013: If the most expensive wines are those that get poured down the drain...
This is expensive wine

There's corked… and then there's Alcina.

Tasted by Cow Town on 3/19/2013 & rated 88 points: Strong black olive on the nose, with a hint of bloody meat. Nice mouthfeel and decent finish. I can't say that there is something off, but I can see why it isn't for everyone. The fruit has subsided, and the earthy, gamey components are front and center. Interesting. (1965 views)
Tasted by Schlutt on 12/5/2011 & rated 87 points: Previous bottle must have been bad because this one was much more interesting. Nice vibrant nose upon opening, with a very smooth mouthfeel throughout the night. Paired well with avacado burgers and various cheeses. Had obvious black olive with truffles flavors coming through after a couple hours. Day 2 was still smooth with some spice and dark red cherries. Glad that all of my bottles weren't a waste.  Tasted by dougsmith on 12/1/2011 flawed bottle: Sherried and also very off. (1527 views)

Tasted by Schlutt on 4/24/2011 & rated 69 points: Wow, this was a disappointment. The nose wasn't too bad upon opening bottle, a bit smokey vegetables with a hint of black fruit underneath. First taste was alcohol with a little spice. After a little time (no decant), this turned into a mess with no structure. I kept going back to it to see if it would open up or come together, but overall this has not aged well, and most of the bottle went down the drain. 2 more bottles left and really worried that they will be a waste too...  Tasted by Eric on 1/4/2011 & rated 79 points: I don't like where this has gone. Rotted plums, prunes, mint and menthol. There is a roasted, almost decomposed edge to this wine. When first opened there was a very obvious alcohol note which did integrate over the course of a couple of hours. This is not aging well. Drink up. (2474 views)
Tasted by cofidis2 on 6/7/2010 & rated 60 points: Simple, lacking fruit, more like water with some alcohol. Poured down the drain. (1935 views)
Tasted by jbposell on 9/6/2008 & rated 89 points: Very funky at first, which mostly blew off and ended up being a pretty earthy mix of boysenberries and blueberries, actually nice in a rustic way. (2078 views)
Tasted by Eric on 3/7/2008 & rated 86 points: Rather similar to the last showing. Very ripe, confected, powdered sugar, menthol, nicely meaty. A solid Syrah. (2550 views)
Tasted by decaturwinedude on 1/26/2008 & rated 91 points: Decanted one hour before first glass. Initially, there was a stewed fruit/vinegar element and funky essence on the nose that others have mentioned. However, I didn't sense that on the palate which was loaded with blue fruit from early on. With air, the nose turned to tar, earth floor. The palate was lush..sweet blue fruit, tar, and a boatload of black pepper on the finish. I thought this was quite delicious after the hour decant. (2320 views)
Tasted by scofer on 1/20/2008 & rated 80 points: One of 9 wines tasted at our syrah/zin OL at Lucio's. I was excited to try the Alcina Las Madres, having tried the ’06 in barrel and really enjoyed it. I recall that the sample we tried last year while visiting Alcina was incredibly aromatic. Well, I brought this wine and it turned out to be quite the bummer. Muted on the nose. Blackberry and meaty notes on the palate, but overpowered by strong balsamic vinegar flavors. Too bad. Hopefully a bad bottle or an anomaly. (2366 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 8/26/2007 & rated 88 points: Blackberry, leather and earth. Rich and extracted but with nice acidity. Big wine. 14.5% alcohol. (2397 views)
Tasted by ErichZ on 8/17/2007 & rated 90 points: Upon opening it had a wonderful nose was of black cherry, meats, almonds, and vanilla. A very nice palate that reminded me of flowers. A nice long finish. This wine had a nice acidic quality that helped balance it. I probably opened this too soon, but it was enjoyable. The others will rest for a few more years. (2401 views)
Tasted by Eric on 7/30/2007 & rated 87 points: Decanted and poured immediately, followed over the next 3 hours. At first quite ripe with a note of blackberry followed by meat, menthol and pepper. Quite juicy with a fair amount of acidity on the finish. A rather nice bottle of Syrah a little riper than I like, but pleasing with a meal. (2679 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 7/9/2007: Tasting With Greg and Rita P Of Alcina (Murray Casa): The nose on this wine shows significant stems (reminds me of a B-C pinot), even retasting tonight after 24 hours. Meaty blackberry, inky with kalamata olive, and that stemmy note creating some herbaceousness on the palate. Finish is still somewhat tight so I would recommend this wine sit for a couple years. A wine that I think for a syrah will flesh and show great complexity, given the raw guts of what's here. (3098 views)
Tasted by shemmy on 5/20/2007 & rated 89 points: On opening, incredible overwhelming nose of tapenade. That mellowed after about an hour. Nice silky mouthfeel, black fruits. (3086 views)
Tasted by WST on 5/12/2007 & rated 91 points: Showed surprisingly well, especially when following an older PJA La Chapelle. Microaerated in open bottle 6 hours before a brief decant. Nice purity of fruit, more restrained than many new world syrahs. Sleek mouthfeel, long finish. (2495 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 4/11/2007 & rated 92 points: Winemakers' Dinner (Levende Lounge, San Francisco, California): Lovely black fruit and chocolate nose; very tasty, black fruit, plum, chocolate and olive palate; medium finish (1854 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.
