Tasted by hoservin on 2/16/2024 & rated 94 points: Coravin by the glass. Nose of black cherry, blackberry, currant, cedar, chocolate and spice. Blackberry, currant, cedar, chocolate, spice and forest floor on the palate. Very long finish with good depth and balance. Full bodied. Served with a mushroom, leek and Gorgonzola tart. (646 views)
Tasted by hanasowner on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured...two glasses over apps and dinner...certainly improved with the second glass, but still a bit tight...dark fruit and chocolate...some earthiness...medium finish with light tannins...could go another 5-10 years. (802 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 11/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Dark plum, cassis and chocolate (999 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 8/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Soft and round with easy to drink tannins and soft mouth-feel. Good length. well structured and easily has the goods to cellar for a good while. (1120 views)
Tasted by goodvitis.com on 5/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Drank with friends, no formal note. Super plush and a slight ripe, it could do with some age to gain some refinement, but it’s super tasty right Joe. Floral, dark fruit, wet soil minerality. Really good stuff. (1449 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 5/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Delicious, rich black cherry fruit with cedar sweet flavors, excellent structure, ample finish, after a day of opening wine was much richer, expansive, an dynamic! (1359 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 3/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Opened, poured half into a 375ml bottle and re-corked.
Decanted the balance and enjoyed with food (Thai drunken noodles, in case you were wondering) and then on its own.
Grassl Cru glass.

Dark purple color. Wonderful nose of black fruits, hint of chocolate and a fresh herbal note (mint/eucalyptus).
Good rich fruit with a vibrant acidity that keeps the ripe fruit in check. Dark cherries, blackberries and some high-tone red fruits as well.
Shows depth and nice length on the finish.
Certainly a Napa cabernet but one that is well executed and made with
some restraint.

Quality cork;
14.5% abv. (1451 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 1/23/2023 & rated 96 points: Final wine of the Agelvispalooza.......Pnp into a decanter at home after we got back from dinner tonight....sat for about an hour as we watched some crazy old comedy roast highlights on tv....what a great way to spend time with good friends and wait for our final bottle to come into focus. Raspberry/strawberry on the nose, along with rose petals on the nose as it evolves. The palate is red fruited, too. Nice mid-weight in the mouth......balanced acidity and tannic structure, with a nice mouthwatering ending. This is my first Rivers-Marie cab and I really love it! Working toward a 96 for me......this has a very nice mid palate with rich fruit throughout. A touch of creamy-ness overall to the wine. Lovely.......95.5 so I'm rounding up to a 96. (2817 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 1/23/2023 & rated 95 points: One hour decant (really needed 2-3 hours). Very deep dark ruby magenta color. Red velvet cake, underripe blackberries, blueberries, raspberry, and subtle orange rind and dark brownie and no. 2 pencil. Smooth, dry, plush palate, with fine, pixelated acidity. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

Mark1NPT was kind enough to pull this out after dinner to conclude our extended wine weekend. This was bottle 19 or 20. So fun… (2465 views)
Tasted by EMark on 12/18/2022: Did I get a bad bottle? This is the first TRB wine I have tried that has been any kind of disappointment. The first clue was the candied fruit on my initial sip. As the wine passed back I did get some woody or, maybe, spicy suggestions under the rear palate. Then, however, I noticed a very strong tingling sensation around the edges of the tongue, Then, it seemed like the tip of my tongue was going numb. ??? The sweetness and the tingling on the tongue all seemed to point to alcohol imbalance. (1408 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 1/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Tobacco and leather on the nose. (2357 views)
Tasted by beau11 on 1/16/2022 & rated 96 points: Best calistoga i’ve tasted from rivers. Much more concentrated and richer flavors than other vintages. Red fruited profile with high acidity, but rich fruits blend nicely. (2124 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 1/14/2022 & rated 93 points: TRB and MS Blind Tasting; 1/14/2022-1/23/2022: This is a powerhouse. Heavy tannins (2138 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 11/7/2020 & rated 96 points: Wow, this is at a very good spot right now, dark red and blue fruits, cinnamon, clove, five spice, red tea, vanilla, velvety smooth, perfect balance. This is a great example of a Napa Cab. Love it. (3497 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 4/17/2020 & rated 95 points: No notes (3629 views)
Tasted by Bob23 on 3/6/2020 & rated 94 points: Bright red fruit, great acidity, a welterweight in prime form, particularly given how young it is. It'll be hard to not drink my other bottle in the next year or two given how delicious this was. (2905 views)
Tasted by jpmo on 2/8/2020 & rated 93 points: An excellent young cab. Years of development ahead but really delicious tonight. It was was an interesting opening tonight for a very big wine - great right after opening, followed by a bit of jammy, young flavor after about 90 minutes, and then smoothed out after a couple hours. Throws off some sediment already so a decant is recommended going forward. Another great RM wine displaying what is so good about the 2016s. (3130 views)
Tasted by TahoeSki on 12/31/2019 & rated 96 points: Drinking excellently with a 2 hour decant before double decent portion back into the bottle to take to NYE dinner at Le Bistro. Served after a 2015 Sea Smoke Southing and 2016 Francois Gaunoux Beaune Clos des Mouches, and everyone loved- a crowd pleaser. (3318 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 12/14/2019 & rated 95 points: CBCC Christmas party

The WOTN. Big fruit up front and velvety smooth. Blackberry, sweet plum, bell pepper, cassis. Mid palette includes some leather and a tannic backbone. Long finish laden with lingering fruit. (2833 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 12/21/2018 & rated 95 points: Decanted 3-5 hours. Very exuberant with healthy amounts of ripe red fruit, mixed liqueurs (raspberry, blackberry, blueberry), oak, cassis, and milk chocolate. Yes painfully young and disjointed but enough character and depth does come through to make it enjoyable. Right in line with the Lore and Panek in terms of youthfulness and accessiblity. Tannins are present but smooth but just needs time to mellow. (3873 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 7/26/2018: July 2018 Rivers-Marie Visit (At Mending Wall winery): Poured blind, in a flight of three which all turned out to be part of the just released portfolio of RM cabs. These were not decanted, just opened and poured to the glasses. Cedary and chewy, with bitter chocolate and a more prominent red fruit core than the other 2 wines in the flight (2016 Napa and Panek). Lots of tannin with the red fruit profile really terrific. This was my favorite of the flight. (4972 views)

2016 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga

from release newsletter:

2016 Rivers-Marie Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon —180 cases, 14.3% alcohol, 80% new oak

I love the old school Napa feel at the core of this wine. It smells and tastes like some of the great California wines from the 60s and 70s only with better farming and oak treatment. The first thing that greets you here is the savory character of the varietal. Due in equal parts to the greatness of the Larkmead site and the uniqueness of the Olmo clone, the modernness of the framing of this wine is meant only as a complement to its traditional center. Damp soil, bay leaves, black walnut and tobacco leaf begin the aromatic profile. Tasting it from tank a week before bottling, it reminded me of the mid-90s Araujo Eisele Vineyard wines. The palate takes on a dusty, minty character featuring plum, cedar and cassis. There’s a stuffing to this wine that has been lacking in years past. The vintage gets a lot of the credit for that. This is the new benchmark for our Calistoga bottling.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
