Tasted by Mscrank on 4/22/2024 & rated 92 points: I’m not a big fan of California Cabs but this 2016 Hess Selection exceeded my expectations. Even without a decant this wine has a pleasant nose of dark cherries, followed by medium body, almost creamy, with more dark fruit, cassis, and just enough oak. Tannins and acidity are in balance with the rest of the package. Very nice, and a good value for the price. (77 views)
Tasted by lundmc on 2/12/2024 & rated 92 points: Very nice at this stage. Nice complimentary flavors of red and dark fruits, leather, a little wood and some tannins. Maybe some rocks too. This wine is well integrated at this point and not too over the top. (224 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 1/22/2024 & rated 92 points: Very well made and tasty number. Good red fruit, with mid tannin and long finish. Its good for a few more years, but I don't think will get better. (256 views)
Tasted by levinml on 9/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Consistent with my notes from two years ago. Nice flavors, full-bodied and without terribly fraying my tongue. May get better for a while yet. (529 views)
Tasted by rlm_522@yahoo.com on 8/10/2023: Rich, smooth, no bite, berry, tobacco (514 views)
Tasted by wineappreciation on 8/5/2023 & rated 90 points: Blackberry, cassis, hints of leather; smooth, very fruitful, good length, though a little too forward and aggressive (494 views)
Tasted by CabinConnoisseur on 4/10/2023 & rated 94 points: The wine remains consistent with my note from a few years ago, but with more development of spices mid-palate and peppery notes on the finish. It continues to offer significant dark cherry in the aroma and on the tongue, with vanilla, chocolate, and oaky notes. Best after a few hours of air. (684 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 1/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Pop and pour. This is singing with buoyant sweet acid, black and blue fruit, fine tannins, rich, full body, long finish. A really nice Mt. Veeder Cab for the price. (963 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 10/27/2022 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby red. Dark nose coated in black currants, graphite and cinnamon. Even a bit of oak. Medium plus tannins (6.5/10) with a medium plus body. Well balanced palate with black currants and berries, crushed baking spices and gravel. Long finish. Drink till 2030. (851 views)
Tasted by Brent M on 5/14/2022: Loved it (896 views)
Tasted by Brent M on 5/14/2022: Awesome (976 views)
Tasted by levinml on 10/1/2021 & rated 92 points: Among the better moderately priced cal cabs I’ve had in a while. Nice flavors, good balance and not a tongue killer. Enjoyed over three nights under pump. Drink anytime. (1583 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 5/2/2021 & rated 91 points: First night, this wine was a mess. Hot, astringent, quite unpleasant. Into a nearby phone booth and it comes out as a pretty damn tasty wine. Good depth, nice balance, sweet tannin. A reasonably made and reasonably priced (that’s relative) Napa cabernet. I only have a couple of bottles remaining so must remember for a Saturday night dinner to decant on Friday. (1918 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 10/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour. Palate-filling and satisfying although youthfully restrained, this is an excellent value that should improve with a bit of cellar time but is good now. Fine, chewy tannins, licorice, blackcurrant, black tea, medium-plus finish. 93+ (2928 views)
Tasted by Salute on 10/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Excellent cab. Would like to revisit in a year or two - but drinking wonderfully now. (2219 views)
Tasted by bobh22314 on 9/8/2020 & rated 94 points: Purple to the rim. Wonderful black fruits up front. Tannins somewhat muted. Long finish. Keep for another two years or even three (2344 views)
Tasted by jeagle on 8/30/2020: Just a quick impression. Day one with a two hour decant was an okay but forgettable experience. Day two was more impressive, especially at this price point: improved texture throughout and collection at mid-palate. (1872 views)
Tasted by mlutsky67 on 8/18/2020 & rated 93 points: A great wine. Deep ruby almost purple in the glass. Nose of dark fruit - blueberries and raspberries dominate. Taste was the same - smooth taste of dark fruit. No burn. Medium legs with a very nice finish. Will but more a the right price. (1669 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 8/10/2020 & rated 90 points: Initial impressions were solid - sweet blueberry in a bundle on the nose and in the mouth. Pleasant mouth feel. The sweetness is oaky vanilla - reminded me of the worst of Caymus. Blue fruit, black cherry, prominent oak and some heat. As Napa Cabernet goes, this is a bargain which, of course, means it’s not a bargain. Still, a good wine that went nicely with tender, rare filet. (1155 views)
Tasted by MADV on 6/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Deep purple in color. Good expression of mountain fruit. Give it some time in the glass and should be even better in the next couple of years. Great value. (1392 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 5/23/2020: All 2016’s, Tasted over 2 nights, non blind. My preference in the following order:

1 Faust Pact: best fruit, purple w some red, cotton candy, jolly rancher.

2 Hess: vanilla oak is not obtrusive, but is noticeable, overshadows the fruit a bit

3 Pickett: bitter, beefy, disjointed, although did improve the second night. (1335 views)
Tasted by Stemidoc on 5/19/2020 & rated 93 points: Very good, worth the cost
Erica didn’t like too much but I would get again (1290 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 4/23/2020 & rated 91 points: Aromas of tangy black cherries, tart currants, with charcoal, vanilla, dark chocolate, some black tea, leather and clove. Full but balanced with moderating acidity. Bold and expressive with a chewy but lively texture, deep currants, plum sauce. Notes of mint, chewing tobacco and earth blend well with vanilla, coconut and dark chocolate. Saucy and rich but lovely vibrancy throughout. I’m curious to see what four or five years does to this wine. Aged 22 months in 80% new French oak. (1568 views)
Tasted by RoyaltyCoins on 3/23/2020 & rated 93 points: Deep ruby

Nose: Wild berry, pie crust, vanilla. Light projection.

Mouth: Steeped plum, cassis, and blackberry come through vivid and pure, keeping a lightly preserved edge just before showing seamless threads of singed vanilla, sweet tobacco, and charcoal, each taking turns center stage. A light pop of cigarette ash comes through at the very end with round, well groomed tannins.

Overall: Intense and vivid, with black fruits that take on a darker edge with the charred elements of the midpalate/finish. Even now each of the elements is completely melted into each other. Unified and seamless. Drink now through 2032. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

93. (1550 views)
Tasted by daneeka on 12/14/2019 & rated 93 points: good the first day (91.5), but 2d day (with coravin) tartness faded a bit and blue and dark fruit came out, with a bit of menthol, and became excellent. 93 pt. (1845 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
