Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 59 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Labrador on 9/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Another lovely bottle of SB from Spottswoode (289 views)
Tasted by cchoukal on 8/25/2023: Oxidized and a touch flat, but still interesting. (327 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 12/18/2022 & rated 92 points: 17x Spottswoode (2x SB, 5x Lyndenhurst, 10x Estate Cab): Two Spottswoode Sauvignon Blancs side-by-side. While these are not the most complex Napa SBs, but they show quite light, airy and well-defined. The 2017 (92 pts) won by a hair thanks to more freshness and the stronger intriguing spearmint aroma vs a fruiter, creamier 2018 (91 pts). All in all, these are good for any summer evening but without the exceptionalism of the best Napa SBs – the benchmark here is Dana’s Sauvignon Blanc from the Hershey Vineyard.

TN: Intense, expressive bouquet displaying a strong typical spearmint note, crushed rocks, some herbs, some citrus notes. On the palate this is bright and very fresh with an impressive attack trough mid palate weight with spearmint, rocks, green apple notes. Nothing tropical. Very pleasant acidity, high but well integrated. Disappears quickly after the mid palate.

Decanting: Not decanted, no decanting needed. (1608 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 12/8/2022 & rated 92 points: Spottswoode tasting (Widder (Meilen ZH)): Spottswoode tasting with proprietor Beth Novak-Milliken with 10 vintages Spottswoode, 5 vintages Lyndenhurst, 2 vintages Sauvignon Blanc. All bottles were opened at 15.00 and briefly decanted for the event which started at 19.00. Main observations were: i/ The flagship Spottswoode was typically light and elegant for a Napa Cab with 2013 being the wine-of-the-night (closely followed by 2014, 2019 and 2020, ii/ the Lyndenhurst tends to be rather extracted and lacking mid-palate presence, although the 2019 broke this rule and was towering over the rest. Brief history, snippets from Beth and complete list of wines included in the tasting story.

Tasting note:
Intense goose berry fruit, mineral layer of steel, some smoke and herbaceous complexity. Great intensity and precision. Fresh and crisp acidity with a fine layer of herbal notes adds freshness. Beth noted that this was a very hot vintage and grapes were picked in August. (1060 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 10/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Another beauty from Spottswoode and consistent with previous experiences with this vintage - a vintage that is still getting better. (772 views)
Tasted by Schwarzer Hund on 11/8/2021: Light yellow, floral citrus nose, plenty of lemony citrus and apricot fruit, modest acidity, medium weight with a lengthy smooth finish. Good match with grilled calamari. (1450 views)
Tasted by streethawk on 10/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Medium yellow. Medium intensity nose that appears to have softened a little, showing some apricot and peaches, with an underpinning of herbaceousness. Sweetish on the entry and only a hint of bitterness on the finish. Feels weighty in the mouth, with added viscosity/richness due to the 14.2% ABV. Great acidity and length. I’m not sure how it will withstand further aging but it is certainly delicious now. (1420 views)
Tasted by konadog on 10/13/2021 & rated 90 points: Has acquired an apricot note and still retains grassy/herbaceous finish (1170 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 9/5/2021 & rated 87 points: Lemon flesh colored
Tomato vines. Backyard garden. Briney.
Crisp. Nice acidity. Loads of greengarden notes. Longish finish. A VERY well made wine, but not my jam. Not a fan of this varietal. That being said, this is a decent wine. (1445 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 3/13/2021 & rated 94 points: The Great Grapes of the World Tasting (New Jersey, USA): The fifth of six dry whites poured tonight. At least one person at attendance thought this was their favorite by a mile. As always in my experience this was a lovely Sauvignon Blanc. Ever so lightly hinting at grassy and layered with rounded citrus fruit with grapefruit in the lead but it is a “sweet, round” ruby red with no bitter edge to it. Really smooth and delicious. Still very young and fresh and long on the finish. Excellent with shrimp and my Tuscan bean salad but different than the Chablis also tasted with it. (2228 views)
Tasted by SammyD1974 on 12/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Pale yellow in color. Lemon on the nose. Lemony, grass, citrus on the palate.

It’s a very easy drinking SB. Crisp, light. Paired with garlic and Parmesan crusted halibut with roasted asparagus. Matched very well.

Great wine. (1383 views)
Tasted by Mplant on 8/20/2020: Beautiful. Crisp. Mellons, citrus , green apple grapefruit. (1596 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 6/23/2020 & rated 91 points: I must say that I am not a SB persons except for rare exceptions. This is one of those rare exceptsions. This is a full bodied almost French like creation. I get sunflower seed some citrus rind (maybe lime) definitely lemon and a finish of grapefruit. Seems best right now. (1765 views)
Tasted by MLR on 5/6/2020 & rated 91 points: Crisp and lively without the grassy flavors of some SBs. (1700 views)
Tasted by Costes76 on 3/17/2020 & rated 88 points: Seafood dinner at home. Medium yellow color with a slight green tinge. Medium nose of green fruit with vegetal and stone fruit notes. Dry, crisp acidity, medium taste of green apple, grass, muted melon and pineapple. Medium body. Medium finish. Good bottle with a different character from my usual NZ SBs. (1721 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 12/26/2019: Loved this. Fresh nose of wildflower and key lime follows through on the palate with lemon grass and rangy mild white grapefruit. Exceptionally attractive and elegant. Guests were unfamiliar with the producer but easily guessed it was in the over-$30 price range. (1823 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 10/8/2019 & rated 92 points: More substantial and more Bordeaux Blanc than I expected. Nose is wildflower, honey, lime rind. Entry is lime, tropical fruit, a canopy of wildflowers and tart tropical fruits. Very soft on the palate. Finishes very long. The biggest question is whether or not this one should have been held or if it was time to drink. In my opinion, time to drink. It certainly is not getting any better in the bottle and really did not improve with a bottle decant over 30 to 45 minutes. A solid Sauvignon Blanc. (2019 views)
Tasted by winegord on 10/4/2019 flawed bottle: Corked (1566 views)
Tasted by buymoreredsdrinkmorewhites on 9/24/2019: Heard good things about this wine so decided to try on a football Sunday, hot september day in Jersey. First smell out of the glass was Cat pee and amonia. Taste of grapefruit pith, grass and amonia. Cousin pudge and my sister all agree. Bad qpr and bad taste. Cousin pudge switched to Vodka. Sister switched to rose'. My cats litter box smells better. 32 bucks for cooking wine. Have drank Merry Edwards for years and cliff lede are much better. Maybe a bad bottle but unless someone else is paying will not revisit. (1441 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 9/24/2019 & rated 91 points: This is a very elegant Sauvignon Blanc but then Spottswoode does make elegant wines. We purchased it last fall during a visit.
It was fresh, had notes of pear and citrus (beautifully balanced) and a bit pineapple, refreshingly crisp, balanced, mouth coating (in my experience only the very best SBs have this characteristic) and lovely finish that left us wanting more.
Spottswoode, take a bow! (1533 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 9/6/2019 & rated 89 points: Consistent with previous note. This sauvignon blanc is more elegant than most, but the regular price is somewhat questionable. (1408 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 8/23/2019 & rated 89 points: I am not a fan of Sauvignon blanc, and to me, this is one of the better ones. From a pop and pour, there is immediately mango and peach. After about 20 minutes, the grass and grapefruit come out to play - I wish they'd stayed home. I'm happy to have bought this locally for $28 but I wouldn't pay much more for it. (1214 views)
Tasted by jzebrack on 7/26/2019 & rated 87 points: I give it a lower rating strictly because of the price point.
It has a bit of oak which differentiates it from other Sauv Blanc's, and it is very well made.
But I have to agree with an earlier reviewer.
I only ran into it because of the Spottswoode name, and we almost always buy something when we visit a winery.
But this is really pricey. (1378 views)
Tasted by emf on 6/10/2019: On of the best Sauvignon Blancs around. Lots of character and layers of flavor. (1405 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 6/10/2019 & rated 94 points: Tasted at the winery. Made from a combination of estate fruit and purchased fruit from Napa, Carneros and Sonoma. Fermented in stainless steel (39%), concrete “cuves” (8%) and neutral French oak (53%). Medium yellow with a green tinge. Such nice balance of grapefruit, lemon peal, pear and quince fruit along with minerals and bright acidity. This is consistently one of my favorite Sauvignon Blanc’s from anywhere in the world. Great age-ability, great texture, precise flavors yet subtle. Easy to drink. (1665 views)

2017 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc

We have been committed to producing exceptional, classically styled Sauvignon Blanc for three decades. Crafted with great care, our Sauvignon Blanc is a serious and expressive wine with structure and sophistication, meant to stand among the greatest Sauvignon Blancs in the world. We source our grapes from some of the finest vineyards in Napa Valley and on Sonoma Mountain, as well as from our own Spottswoode Estate Vineyard. Our method of fermentation—using a combination of small stainless barrels, French oak and concrete, egg-shaped cuves—means that we manage around 200 individual fermentations each vintage. This technique results in a complex, textural, rich, and vibrant wine that is both intellectually compelling and extremely enjoyable. Because our production is small, national availability is limited.

Winemaker Notes: We are extraordinarily proud of our 2017 Sauvignon Blanc. In a vintage of such extreme heat, we were able to craft a wine that is ripe and textured, yet still retains its freshness—a notable achievement! The wine is mouthcoating and viscous, with a balancing acid tension and great mouth-watering juiciness. The beauty is there aromatically, with an initial impression of lime zest, lemon pith, and citrus blossom. It then opens to white peach, nectarine, mandarin, cream, with hints of vanilla and lime curd, both on the nose and on the palate. Rich and texturally enticing, with great balance and length.

Sauvignon Blanc

Varietal Character

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
