| Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 7 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Eudemis on 1/15/2022: 14% alcohol. S 60%, G 20%, Mrvdr 20%. Top quality cork with no wine penetration whatsoever. Dark colour with some thinning at the rim; some turbidity (but I am basing this note on the last glass in the bottle). Outstanding nose of dark wild berries including blackberry and blueberry with a hint of a pleasant medicinal note. The mouth is just as good with a near perfect balance between fruit and grip (supplied mostly by acidity as the tanins are subdued); silky mouthfeel. Nothing cooked or overripe, just optimal maturity and skilful winemaking. A perfect match for ribeye steak with chips and creamy mushrooms. A success without a doubt, and capable of ageing another ten years at least. (990 views) | | Tasted by Eudemis on 10/29/2018: 14% alcohol. Syrah 60%, Mourvèdre 20%, Grenache 20%. Very good long cork with no wine penetration; lovely smell off it. Decanted 30 mn ahead in view of the high Syrah content and the tender age of the bottle. Fairly deep colour, with some thinning at the edge of the rim. Very enticing nose with ripe dark cherries, some liquorice and a fleeting whiff of strawberries. The wine's flavours were comprehensively overwhelmed by the so-called "Alabama seasoning" (does such a thing even exist except in the mind of my local supermarket manager?) on the rack of pork. Much better on its own afterwards, and I am basing this note on the latter part of the tasting. More cherries and liquorice in the mouth and a lively finish; plenty of grip, which I expect will soften with age. Very good smooth mouthfeel. Can be drunk now in its youthful glory, but will improve when some of its vigour recedes to make way for more complexity (hopefully). This is very good but probably slightly overpriced at 25€. In the same class as Mas de la Séranne Antonin et Louis. The quality of the wines coming out of the Terrasses du Larzac AOC is remarkable at the moment. I would happily repurchase at 20€. | Domaine de Montcalmes Producer website Red Rhone Blend Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.
A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
