Tasted by citizen1 on 3/17/2024 & rated 85 points: Meh - pretty monochromatic. Light strawberry. (73 views)
Tasted by Mootsie on 6/23/2022 & rated 83 points: Strawberry, pepper…not much else. Light bodied. Simple. Likely won’t buy again. (460 views)
Tasted by srh on 12/1/2019: Private Preserve after Day 1; Slightly chilled both days; (The winery recommends a 55 °F serving temp!)

88% Grenache & 12% Mourvèdre obtained from the Rancho Solo (39%), Alta Loma (34%), Ventana (15%), & Del Barba (12%) Vyds, the 1st 3 being cool climate Monterery sources of the Grenache, & the last being the Contra Costa source of the Mourvèdre; 13.6% ABV, 5.5 g/L T..A., & 3.72 pH; 2,425 cases

N: CLOSED; Red rasps, straws, with flowers underneath

P: LM body; NICE, almost swtish frt met by a bit of astringent pucker which QUITE resolves by the LONG, BALANCED, TANGY/swt (60:40) finish with NOTHING out of place. Stylistically, EASILY *could* have been ambushed by the night's Homemade Beef Chili with Beans, but wasn't 'cuz of its balance & acidity. Drink now & through '20, POSS longer. // Day 2: Showed VERY well aromatically, < so on the P, though @ LEAST adequately. Went well with Breaded Grilled Tilapia, TJ's Rice Risotto, & [surprisingly, to me @ least] Baked (Ltly Swtnd) Acorn Squash! Look to drink any remaining bottles over the next 12-15 mos. ∑: My EXC-/EXC, arguably the higher based upon the QPR of the $11.99 pd for it! 92 pts WE @ $20, 90 Vinous (Raynolds), & 1* ("Good Value") Connoisseurs' Guide. [As of early Dec '19, wine-searcher still shows numerous U.S. sources from $14-$20.55.] (998 views)
Tasted by srh on 11/6/2019: Private Preserve after Day 1; Slightly chilled both days; (The winery recommends a 55 °F serving temp!)

N: Red rasps/wild straws with undertones of earthiness

P: LM body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by just a SMIDGIN of astringent PUCKER which fairly seamlessly transitions into a LONG, VERY slightly spicy finish with a TANGY/swtness to the few, unoffensively firming, very, VERY fine tannins. Drinking VERY nicely for now & through '20, poss a BIT longer. My EXC- for this VERSATILE, food friendly style, & I'd *definitely* be open to an argument for higher based upon the QPR of the $11.99 pd for it! // Day 2: VERY minimal fall off; 92 pts WE @ $20, 90 Vinous (Raynolds), & 1* ("Good Value") Connoisseurs' Guide. [As of early Aug '19, wine-searcher still shows numerous U.S. sources from $14-$20.55.]

Note: Also tasted 9/1, 3, & 23/2018, + 6/13 & 7/27/19. (1032 views)
Tasted by NutmegNative on 10/19/2019 & rated 86 points: A refreshing light Grenache. Tastes of strawberries and red currants with a bit of woody aftertaste. A little high on acidity. Overall impression of an American Beaujolais. A year or two of ageing may improve this wine. (1049 views)
Tasted by srh on 7/27/2019: Private Preserve after Day 1; Slightly chilled both days

N: Closed; Ripe red rasps with notes of straws & undertones of earthiness

P: LM, poss Med, body; NICE, ALMOST swtish frt NICELY balanced by an acidity which transitions into a LONG, tangy/swt, POSS very, VERY slightly faint finish [a function of the wine's temp?] which DID resolve as it warmed. Showed WELL with a veritable potpourri of entrees: Shrimp Salad, Calamari Sandwich, & Beef Bolognese Ravioli Lasagna (COSTCO MRE) with added Sharp Cheddar Cheese, a lineup VERY few wines could have handled! :) // Day 2: Held well. For now & through '20, poss a bit longer. My EXC-/EXC, arguably the higher if one attends to the QPR of the $11.99 which I pd. 92 pts WE @ $20, 90 Vinous (Raynolds), & 1* ("Good Value") Connoisseurs' Guide. [As of early Aug '19, wine-searcher still shows numerous U.S. sources from $14-$20.55.]

Tasted by srh on 6/13/2019: Private Preserve after Day 1; Chilled a BIT on Day 1

N: FRAGRANT wild straws with notes of flowers

P: LM, poss Med, body; RNDISH entry with NICE, almost stish frt met by a very, VERY slightly astringent acidity, the latter holding the fort into & through the attractively firm finish with HINTS of swtness. My VG+/EXC-, trending towards the higher because of food versatility, the GORGEOUS aromas, & the QPR of the $11.99 purchase price. // Day 2: Not AS enjoyable, likely because I neglected to put a BIT of chill on it beforehand. 92 pts WE @ $20, 90 Vinous (Raynolds), & 1* ("Good Value") Connoisseurs' Guide. [As of early Aug '19, wine-searcher still shows numerous U.S. sources from $14-$20.55.] (1036 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 12/23/2018: Too fruity for me, but probably good for non-geeks. (1015 views)
Tasted by marcusdoshi on 12/3/2018 & rated 86 points: Venue: Jennifer's; General Notes: I guess this one moved into Paisley Park right after the horse tranqs did their nasty deed… I like Bonnie Doon, I really do, though wish I had blinded this one; it might have saved me the trouble of having to work through ignoring their pretentious malarckey. White pepper, gravel, all the good Grenache bits with the foil of Mourvèdre, bringing a little rhubarb jam to the nose and stretching things out. This is a really well balanced wine on first slug: mellow strawberry, some bitter cocoa, and tannins that are silky AF. AF. Like a baby’s butt, except that baby is actually baby Marvin Gaye’s butt. Smooth. A little bit of vine on the finish and that pleasant patina of teeth tannin lingering as long as the bass line in Let’s Get it On. Sophisticated, baby. ; Wine Notes: | Eco Style | Biodynamic | Farming Notes | 29% Rancho Solo
34% Alta Loma
15% Ventana

Tasted by gkpaoli on 11/17/2018: Tons of fruit, berries, very enjoyable, especially for the price (569 views)

N: More red rasp than straws, with a definite earthy component

P: Med, pos LM, body; NICE, spicy frt met by the BAREST hint of astringent pucker which transitions into a LONG finish with a tangy/swtness (65:35) to the VERY few, *fine* tannins. // Day 2: Held well. For now & through '20, poss a bit longer. My VG+/EXC-, arguably the higher if one attends to the QPR of the $11.99 which I pd. 92 pts WE @ $20, & 90 Vinous (Raynolds). N: Straws, poss red rasps, with notes of minerals

P: Med body; RNDISH body with NICE frt met by some puckerish astringency which takes on notes of spice as it moves into & through the LONG finish with a tangy/swtness to the FEW very, VERY fine tannins. Held up nicely Day 2, when I also but JUST a bit of a chill on it. For now & through '20, poss a bit longer. My VG+/EXC-, arguably the higher if one attends to the QPR of the $11.99 which I pd. 92 pts WE @ $20, & 90 Vinous (Raynolds).  Tasted by srh on 9/1/2018: Taste New Wines for September (San Diego Wine Co.): 88% Grenache & 12% Mourvèdre obtained from the Rancho Solo (39%), Alta Loma (34%), Ventana (15%), & Del Barba (12%) Vyds, the 1st 3 being cool climate Monterery sources of the Grenache, & the last being the Contra Costa source of the Mourvèdre; 13.6% ABV, 5.5 g/L T..A., & 3.72 pH; 2,425 cases

N: Closed; Straws, rasps

P: LM body; NICE frt met by SOME structure which morphs into a LONG, balanced, very, very SLIGHTLY tangy finish with swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. For now, but should improve over the next 6 mos or so, then drink well for at least 2 yrs more. The winery recommends serving @ 55 F. While that seems on the low side (particularly with SLIGHT tannins still showing), "cool" room temp is almost GUARANTEED to enhance this, IMHO. Also, I couldn't agree *MORE* with the ff statement in the winery's Tasting Notes: "(This is the 'Pinot Noir' that North Americans are seeking; they just don’t realize it yet.)" My VG+/EXC-, likely the higher. 92 pts WE @ $20. [This vendor's $11.99 is $2 < wine-searcher's current lowest!] (973 views)
Tasted by heythatslife on 7/7/2018 & rated 89 points: Juicy red berries galore, and a hint of spices (clove and pepper). Surprisingly zesty on the palate while identifiable as grenache, and tannins are light and gentle. Obviously designed for short-term consumption but it'll be rollicking good fun while it lasts. (911 views)
Tasted by Quincy Koetz on 6/3/2018 & rated 87 points: Gloriously ruby red color. Aroma of plum. Strawberry and raspberry taste. Very light acidity and approachable finish. Tastes like summer! Definitely something to get more than a bottle of next time we're at bonny Doon. (886 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
