Community Tasting Notes (average 92.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 103 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by essenceofreal on 5/11/2024 & rated 92 points: Drinking well. Decanted 1.5 hrs then drank over another 2 hrs.

All in a nice drink. In top form with no sign of decline, should last a long while. Although last glass may have started to dry out.

Had some decent cab characteristics, positive notes of cigar, tobacco and cedar, yet a bit big and alcoholic kinda bomb. So then of course one thing leads to another and the result is a monolithic characteristic with a boring echo throughout. Missing complexity. Kinda hollow if that makes sense.Fine to drink in a crowd but I wouldn't want or couldn't drink more than a glass despite this coming from my wine cellar! Last glass had a peppery spice thing going on which reminded me of syrah, really strange.

Typical Napa over the top and over hyped over done / over the top from some idiot wine maker who over extracted the juice taking away from the essence of what it could be. Should have and could have been better.

I used to love these back in the day some 20+ years ago. Then i discovered Bordeaux. Thank you Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni for helping ruin the wine industry. (44 views)

Tasted by PB wino on 11/30/2022 & rated 96 points: Smooth drink, nice fruit. Well balanced.
Short decant. (1278 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 9/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Absolutely delicious. One of the better cabs I have had this year. (1624 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 5/7/2022 & rated 96 points: An easy 96+ points. Highly recommend, drinking spectacularly even without a formal decant (pre-poured into glasses ~ 45 minutes prior to initial consumption and this worked well) and still has years to go with proper cellaring although I see little additional upside in significant further cellaring - drink or hold but heavily leaning on the drink. Deep purple, some peripheral bricking, soft texture and pleasant mouth feel, very well integrated with a long lingering aftertaste. Nose initially muted but opened up very nicely with balanced dark stone fruit, a hint of dust, coffee and baking spices. Flavor profile darker, complex and well integrated with dark stone fruit and classic cassis up front including plum and dark cherry followed by onset of of tar, stone, graphite and a beautiful smokey finish.  Tasted by bonedoc on 11/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Out of magnum, dark fruits, notes of tobacco, savory rather than sweet. Missing some of the brighter notes I associate with this producer, but still very good. (3770 views)
Tasted by Plush05 on 11/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Nice remaining acidic note. Decent nose. Good fruit flavor. After taste not very prominent. (3047 views)
Tasted by Plush05 on 11/10/2020 & rated 93 points: Lovely. Nice fruit and good density and balance of flavor. Tannins softened. Enjoyed over several hours. Didn’t feel need to decant. Ready to drink out the bottle. Tasted like it’s at its peak. (2806 views)
Tasted by martin_e on 6/14/2020 & rated 96 points: One of the best vintages for Pride. Excellent wine in its expression, balance, and complexity. If you need to introduce a European-style wine lover, who's a bit snobby about the world of California wines (one of my past sins), this beauty would do the job. Spicy aromas with pronounced tobacco, complex fruit-based flavors that change in the glass from not well-defined fruit mix, to plumb, and then sweet ripe cherry. Strong character; currently, at peak of maturity (2912 views)
Tasted by Rbtrage on 3/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Paired with dry aged steaks at Prime & Beyond for Chris’ big 40. Good wine but it needs a few hours still to open up. (2983 views)
Tasted by Gracegreek on 8/17/2019 & rated 97 points: Exceptional wine. (2792 views)
Tasted by dwbumsted on 6/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Wonderfully balanced, smooth and integrated. This Pride is drinking beautifully now. (2867 views)
Tasted by wilkinsmd on 2/8/2019 & rated 92 points: Sweet and long, dark in color with very little browning. This still has plenty of life ahead of it and honestly I would not open another bottle for 5 years or more. (2978 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 2/1/2019 & rated 96 points: Still a lovely wine and perhaps at peak right now. Dark red in color with no fading at the edges. The nose has ripe plums and cherry. Lush fruit on the palate (but not cloying or overdone). Black cherries, currants, smoke, leather. Beautifully resolved tannins, nice acidity, everything in balance and working together to create something that is greater than the sum of the individual parts. Long, graceful finish of dark fruits and a bit of pepper. Great right now and for at least the next 5 years. 68% of the fruit comes from Sonoma and 32% from Napa. (2838 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 8/18/2018 & rated 91 points: Decanted and drank over three hours. This has firm, chewy tannins, lots of oddly oaky alcohol, and some deep dark fruit but it lacks concentration. I'm not sure time will help this wine. (3367 views)
Tasted by tward on 5/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Yes, a friend brought this to our casual "BBQ", with burgers and grilled chicken. So... no notes, but at least we didn't drink it from solo cups! Velvety perfectly integrated fine tannins, fully ripe but, round, not flabby, great with or without food, but showed its stuff best on its own. (3261 views)
Tasted by zinnut on 4/22/2018 & rated 90 points: Beautifully integrated tannins with bright fruit and a complexity I find interesting. Tanzer's notes are curious following his original 94 rating. I find this ready and not much improvement expected. Drink. (3158 views)
Tasted by neuhausr on 5/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Much more integrated this time around. Time in the cellar was kind to this bottle compared to the last one consumed in 2013. (5058 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 7/19/2016: Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Alpharetta, GA): Very dark core with garnet rim; dark berry, tar, sweet vanilla, kind of grapey, fine tannin, tart, juicy, vanilla bean, reminds me of Syrah Grenache blend, modern and extracted but showing some restraint; solid. (6100 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 3/13/2016 & rated 93 points: Rich, delicious black cherry fruit, burnt cassis flavors, excellent structure, long finish (6122 views)
Tasted by PortFanatic on 12/23/2015 & rated 94 points: Finally a good showing from this wine. 4 hour decant. Dark color. Still looks young. Gorgeous nose (It was oaky on opening, but that blew off), Coffee, chocolate, and just a touch of fresh blood. Very good acidity. Tannins are finally giving up and letting the fruit shine through. Ripe! No one would confuse this with Bordeaux. Very long finish. (5779 views)
Tasted by jswine15 on 11/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Drinking well, but still a bit closed in. Good fruit, lots of tannins, good nose and color. This will go for a while, like 10 years (5757 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 8/9/2015 & rated 96 points: Pride Mountain 11-Vintage Vertical Dinner (Singapore): Medium purple. Classic Napa nose of pine, black tea, forest, cassis, complex. Enters the palate with real freshness and presence, nice and sappy with both good fruit and structure. Soft tannins, very good length. A very good CavSav, one of the best of this vertical. (5848 views)
Tasted by bnord81 on 6/25/2015 & rated 98 points: At Spoon and Stable with Jerry and Carrie of Veya. Outstanding pop and pour (4291 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 5/27/2015 & rated 95 points: Deep garnet. Nose was clearly Pride, but the smack-you-in-the-face aromas seem to have mellowed and melded together better/well. Nose of chocolate, black berries and clove. Taste was smooth, rich, berrilicious. (3423 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
