Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 62 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ShakinSwedens on 12/8/2023: Last of the case, compared to prior notes the nose is now far more reticent but the fruit is still glorious, silky mouthfeel with some complex subtleties of camphor and orange zest peeking through. Fiercely tannic- so much so you absolutely need food to drink it. For me this is going to be a long-lived LN and could end up competing with many entry level Barolos given the structure on show here.
Edit: day 2 the tannins are far more integrated and there are more hints of spice on the palate. Confirms this is one to age a good bit further. (254 views)
Tasted by afields on 6/9/2023: Definitely ripe, and I’d prefer more aromatics relative to fruit, but doesn’t feel hot or sunburned unlike some from this vintage. (495 views)
Tasted by viking92067 on 6/3/2023 & rated 90 points: No change from my prior tasting note. (494 views)
Tasted by viking92067 on 11/20/2022 & rated 90 points: I cannot add anything more than LEGAREJM LIKES THIS WINE who nailed it. Lovely entry easy to drink Barolo from a master while you wait for the big boy Barolos from Vajra to mature. (828 views)
(2383 views)
Tasted by ShakinSwedens on 4/1/2021: Superbly perfumed nose- sour cherries- grippy tannins- lovely luminosity. Couldn’t keep my nose out of the glass tonight! (1934 views)
Tasted by kingkanu on 3/6/2021: Seems ready now, a decent depth of dark and red berry fruit, fair acidity and a touch of fine tannin, good with or without food (1969 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 2/25/2021: This is a quite solid, pleasant, if not particularly great, vintage of this wine. This was very open and giving from the start but closed up a bit over time. May yet benefit from a year or two in bottle. I enjoyed it but expect '18 and '19 to be superior. (2035 views)
Tasted by Mikelaf on 1/1/2021 & rated 87 points: 2nd Langhe in 2 days, and the two are at both extremes -it looks like. (Vajra vs Pira & Figli)

This Vajra is very approachable, I am not under the impression that it will age very long. If i had other bottles i would be drinking them in the next 2 years.

Its looks very much like a pinot noir,
Has vegetebal notes to the nose,
Intense sour cherry, light tanins well balenced with acidity.

It was a pleasant wine to drink, not complex. This is why im giving 87pts. (2053 views)
Tasted by wacko on 12/19/2020 & rated 90 points: GV nebbiolo from one of the best producers that you can drink relatively early. Slightly better than expected from a fairly difficult vintage: wish I got the 2016 in time but I would buy the 2017 again anyway...or wait for the 2018. (1177 views)
Tasted by WineMouse on 12/18/2020: Headache (1156 views)
Tasted by chatters on 6/21/2020: Blind tasting varietals (Leo's place, Haberfield): Served blind.
Cherry, a little cream, sweet spice, a slight herbaceous note - almost tobacco leaf. medium plus intensity acidity and tannin which is quite course, cherry, a little spice. Nice.
I called young Chianti Riserva Sangiovese (1986 views)
Tasted by GasperTheWineGuy on 6/5/2020 & rated 89 points: Outstanding Pasta/Pizza wine. Sour Cherry, leather, cedar Medium + acidity, long finish. (1708 views)
Tasted by legarejm on 3/22/2020 & rated 90 points: A typical entry-level but very well-made nebbiolo, for a good price. Floral perfume and fruity, cherries, light notes of strawberries, very light leather and tobacco notes. Refreshing acidity, nice mouth covering texture and soft tannins. Very well balanced! (2143 views)
Tasted by winedr on 3/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Very floral. Cherry and strawberry. Smooth. Fairly typical Nebbiolo. Goes well with food. Drinking well now and probably will for a couple more years or so. (2083 views)
Tasted by cglex on 1/25/2020 & rated 88 points: Tasted at Berman's. Very nice nebblio at $20. But, I have too many Barolos I need to drink up soon, so passed. (2308 views)
Tasted by lovanc@outlook.com on 1/24/2020: Sour cherries bracing acidity with just enough tannin. Delicious, well made wine that is very food friendly. (106 views)
Tasted by rlove on 1/22/2020 & rated 89 points: Classic Nebbiolo nose of cherry and rose. Balsamico quality on the palate, medium-full weight, soft and accessible but with significant density. A good Langhe Nebbiolo for drinking over the short to midterm. (1885 views)
Tasted by chrischap01 on 1/18/2020 & rated 90 points: Decanted 1 hour. Treat cherry, medium tannins, a hint of shove. long finish. (1634 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 1/9/2020: Lovely wine. Still showing some grapey, primary fruit over the tannins. Fine to drink now for an interesting look at this wine, but should age quite well. (1387 views)
Tasted by Steve.330i on 12/24/2019 & rated 89 points: still young but it shows its potential even if some youngness defects are present. Red ruby a little transparent and tipical rose / red fruits nose of nebbiolo; here some alcool is out of the texture. enjoying mouth, fresh, red fruits, tannis are very strong right now. medium to long lenght. to drink in 3 years, it will improve a lot! (1373 views)
Tasted by FredericoWines on 12/13/2019 & rated 88 points: Strawberry and cherry with violet floral nose. Light body and fruit forward. Simple and straightforward wine but in nice and food friendly way. Paired well with lightly sauced pasta or pizza. (1330 views)
Tasted by charlesryder on 12/11/2019 & rated 89 points: Not as good as I'd hoped. Prefer Vietti Perbacco. (1386 views)
Tasted by csnyder612 on 11/20/2019 & rated 90 points: Tasted with Giuseppe Vajra at Fausto at the CAC. Hart & Cru food pairing event, Cincinnati. Nov. 11, 2019.

AHHH! It was pointed out to me that this note originally rated the wine at "56". I think that was a rating-slider malfunction when I posted - or I had tasted too much wine (but how is THAT possible?). In any event, the wine is a 90. Beautiful Nebbiolo, very approachable - leaning toward Barbaresco vs. Barolo (1569 views)
Tasted by Jobu on 9/14/2019 & rated 90 points: Red fruit & anise nose. Strawberry, raspberry, and cherry and a little of that anise. Good acidity & pretty good length. Good value Nebbiolo with a little room to improve given its youth, but it’s ready now. (1802 views)

G.D. Vajra

Producer Website

The Vajra family has quietly amassed a serious collection of vineyards that make them one of Piedmont’s larger, family-owned estates, something they have accomplished while maintaining the already high level of their entry-level wines. Every wine in the range is absolutely delicious and full of personality. I can’t recommend these new releases highly enough. Antonio Galloni

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
