Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 155 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Grinner on 11/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted off minimal sediment for an hour. Didn't take notes. For $37 in 2017 this was great. It leans into loam and dark red/black fruit. Tannins resolved. (567 views)
Tasted by stschutz on 9/23/2023 & rated 95 points: Out of the bottle it seemed disjointed and out of place. We set the bottle aside after 30 minutes and began drinking a 2016 Bevan Tench which we'd been decanting for the previous hour. The Bevan was superb but what we didn't know was that over the next hour and a half. the Pine Ridge had opened and exploded into the most gorgeous and balanced wine. We were shocked at how beautiful the mouthfeel was, and with a wonderfully long lasting finish. This was the surprise winner of the evening which included heavy hitters 2016 Bevan Tench EE and 2019 Littorai-The Return. With Tim and Katie for her birthday over ribeye and lobster. (623 views)
Tasted by Winechat63 on 5/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Just finished our last bottle. Drinking great. Their base Napa cab is an incredible value. Punches way above its weight class. (800 views)
Tasted by midtownmac on 4/14/2023: Brought to a restaurant. Open and enjoyed immediately out of a Magnum. Plummy fruits, light tannins. Drinking very nicely. (1142 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 7/22/2022 & rated 90 points: Very well done. Cassis, blueberries and charred oak. Sweet and modest tannins. (1618 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 7/2/2022 & rated 90 points: Drinking very well now. Great on the second day. Drink now or in the next 2-3 years. (1316 views)
Tasted by mvande21 on 4/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Black fruits, black currants, plum. Full bodied, smooth and balanced. Polished tannins and medium length finish. Two hour decant from magnum. Paired well with rib-eye steaks. (1513 views)
Tasted by JCaress on 12/2/2021 & rated 93 points: Nearly impossible to go wrong with Pine Ridge NV. It is a fair price for a very high quality cabernet. The fruit is superb and it has just enough tannins to add to the mouthfeel. (1724 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 9/25/2021 & rated 90 points: Deep dark center, red rim with modest signs of age.
Heady nose of blueberries and crushed black plums, slightly oily, black olives and polished oak, alcohol is noticeable.
Smooth and a little sweet, lots of blue/black fruit mixed with oak, tannins and acidity are waining but still present, alcohol better integrated, nice toasty oak and roast black berry finish.
Very polished Cabernet, in a very Napa Valley style - not my preferred choice, but still very enjoyable. Drinking well now with a couple of hours of air, will keep for another 5 years no trouble. (1821 views)
Tasted by Winechat63 on 5/9/2021 & rated 92 points: I think jroberts86 described it best. Drinking great right now. Let it decant for 90 minutes. tannins are soft. Acidity gone. Fruit very good. Have one bottle left. Hmmm (1761 views)
Tasted by Vino Loco on 4/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Rich and complex. Chocolate, brandy and a bunch of other good stuff. (1799 views)
Tasted by Wine Lover 1964 on 3/28/2021 & rated 89 points: Still heavy oak which has not faded. Would be better with less oak. (1858 views)
Tasted by Vino Loco on 3/14/2021 & rated 92 points: Deep full bodied Cabernet. Needs a good decant - quite closed at the beginning. Opens up to fine tannins and a solid finish. It is starting to get a bit of a brandy feel to it, so may be at or past its peak, but still an absolute pleasure to drink. (1670 views)
Tasted by Cuellar's Cellar on 2/17/2021 & rated 88 points: a good bottle. Very earthy, old world style. Over all it was a bottle that I could drink, but would not buy again. Cheers (1692 views)
Tasted by jroberts86 on 1/3/2021 & rated 92 points: My last bottle, glad I waited. Just lovely! Rich deep hue, modest nose. Integrated fruit of cherry, elderberry, blueberry. An underlying minerality and medium soft tannins. ah, the finish! (1629 views)
Tasted by e7seed@msn.com on 10/9/2020 & rated 93 points: Just delicious. (1739 views)
Tasted by dangdad on 10/5/2020 & rated 90 points: Great wine, but needs to be decanted and filtered. Opens up nicely with dark fruit. The tannins soften after decanting for at least 1/2 hour. Paired perfectly with a red sauce pasta dish, as well as with dessert, a chocolate cake :) (1747 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 9/8/2020 & rated 92 points: Pretty solid, especially as I tend not to like any of the '13 vintage in Napa. This is a bit more balanced but also quite powerful, some nice acidity too. Well done for the vintage. (2049 views)
Tasted by JElk on 9/6/2020 & rated 91 points: Still decent. Agree with note that a great QPR. (1611 views)
Tasted by Bwallace on 6/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Excellent QPR! (1897 views)
Tasted by Hi.its.Don.4.Wine on 2/14/2020 & rated 92 points: So here I am, planning my evening dinner and thinking to myself what do I want to drink? For context, you will need to know that I was planning a simple preparation of Meatloaf (Pasture raised of course) with a Mushroom Sauce and Roasted Potatoes (remember, that’s my go-to now).

I had just had a weekend wherein I had tasted a couple of wines I had poured the day before, nothing outlandish and nothing I’m writing about, so I wanted to step out a little and refresh my palate and treat it to something a little more special.

As much as I hate bringing out some of my “big guns” from that phenomenal vintage in Napa, 2013, I stumbled across a wine that, while from that vintage, didn’t represent what I thought would be anywhere near the best-of-the-best, so to speak. Boy was I wrong, but I’m not sorry!

Initially getting good, but not great reviews, and since my dinner was the same categorically, it seemed a perfect fit. I have to admit I was a little, okay more like a lot, wrong.

While their Single-vineyard wines received much better reviews upon release, this was a sleeper, big time! The wine is blended from their Estate vineyards in Napa Valley, mainly the Stags Leap District, Oakville, and Rutherford AVAs, with a mix of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Merlot and aged in 35% new American oak barrels, for 18 months prior to bottling. Combining that with the excellent 2013 Vintage and a few years to settle out and you have a wine worthy of any meal!

Right out of the bottle, I tasted the distinct profile of that all too famous “Rutherford Dust.” A little closed off, but with fruit that, once released, was sure to please; and it did! Needing a good couple hours, the wine started its dance in my mouth when sipped. Dark berry fruit with a little bit remaining of that “Dust” I mentioned; tannins that were there but mostly to add body and depth to the wine. The finish wrapped in such a pleasant and soft spice that lingered.

Oh, so I didn’t even mention the food, and why should I when I have such a wonderful wine in front of me. Equal time, however, requires me to mention the food. I thought maybe I had gone too far with some of the heat from spices that I included; a little Harissa in the Meatloaf and some Chili Flakes in the Mushroom Sauce, but I wasn’t as heavy-handed as I thought I was and it turned out great; the spice notes comingling with the spiciness of the wine, perfect. For the record, I’m not mentioning the potatoes, they were what they were.

From reviews that may not have been true to this wine's future, I can say that the wine deserves much better reviews now with some time in bottle and I shall regard it as another of those fantastic 2013’s.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
