Tasted by Fml on 5/24/2021 & rated 90 points: Smooth crisp. We drank at trulucks. Naples fla. 5/24/21 (1063 views)
Tasted by Vince_chip on 5/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Superbe ! (1128 views)
Tasted by VAGenius on 3/13/2021 & rated 91 points: (Clarity Restaurant Virtual Tour and Tasting) - Nose of pineapple, lemon, and tangerine peel. Pineapple, green apple, anjou pear, vanilla and tart lemon flavors. Lemon, waxy pear, and ginger on the finish. Nicely balanced. (969 views)
Tasted by ewasowicz on 3/7/2021 & rated 91 points: Nose: Covid
Taste: This is a full Chardonnay with lemon, grapefruit, grass and a light hint of oak.
A great value Chardonnay. (549 views)
Tasted by winetennis on 12/27/2020 & rated 90 points: golden medium to dark yellow, lemon straw on the nose, tart lemon and quince on the palate, notes of oak with a long citrus finish; very very good (619 views)
Tasted by Zoomin Z on 11/15/2020 & rated 90 points: Oaky, lemony nose. Pleasing, medium weight body. Bracing acidity. (609 views)
Tasted by Rbhan12 on 10/16/2020 & rated 91 points: I’m still very new to wine, and admittedly this is my first serious white wine. When I first put my nose in this, I thought “wow, this smells like champagne!” Well duh, Chardonnay is a grape used for champagne. I’m still young so my champagne experience is limited (and inexpensive), but nonetheless this brought me back to parties and celebrations and easier times.

Medium straw color. Nose is floral and citrus, lemon marmalade. Palate is medium body, good acidity, lemon peel, sweet pineapple, pear, and floral notes. Some oak is present as well. Finish is bright and acidic but well balanced, flint and minerality, with some tangy spice that I can’t quite put my finger on. Very smooth overall with well integrated oak.

I’m new to Chardonnay drinker but I did enjoy this quite a bit. Would definitely buy again. (792 views)
Tasted by bigredPA on 9/27/2020 & rated 91 points: Crisp and fresh, with a Burgundian lean, this chard balances its fruit well with mineral / stone components. Nicely balanced. (606 views)
Tasted by Josch48 on 7/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Pale straw color with clean mineral and wet stone running through a lemony lychee aroma in the nose. The bracing, yet not off-putting acidity complements the lemon custard flavor that has a hint of caramalized creme brûlée that lingers through the finish. A sophisticated and uplifting wine that delivers tart citrus and grape skin notes, and concomitant velvety mouthfeel with flavors that sparkle and beguile. We live in Maine and will sacrifice three crustaceans tonight with as much mercy as possible, and enjoy this wine, one we rate much more highly than the Russian River Pinot Noir we had from this producer.  Tasted by pepmi on 7/17/2020 & rated 85 points: This weekend's California tasting Odyssey features Russian River Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Gary Farrell. Farrell is a name long associated with these varietals. So give Mr. Farrell high marks for share of voice and name recognition. But let's focus on the wine.

The nose and color are indistinguishable from any other Napa Chardonnay so forgive me for skipping the usual descriptors. There is a slight musty feel in the mouth that would typically signal a red flag.
Rhone varietal characteristics come to mind -- a bit of orange peel is most prominent. The finish though is distracting. Harsh, green egg notes that do not suggest a pleasant drinking experience.

Imagine yourself in a tasting room and the winemaker hands you a glass of this wine, extolling its virtues. Not wanting to be rude, you would nod, confirm the litany of Burgundian characteristics and then, as attention is placed on someone else, you quietly slip out. All who love wine have experienced someone else's appreciation failing to touch you. (794 views)
Tasted by RoyaltyCoins on 7/1/2020 & rated 92 points: Pale gold, hint of green.

Nose: Huge spice notes, nutmeg, allspice, light cinnamon and fresh cut florals.

Mouth: Green and yellow apple notes, nutmeg and lemon peel come through borne on an arc of healthy acid. Finish is lip-smacking following the tartness, offering up light herbed notes and pithy grapefruit rind on the back end that doubles back on itself.

Overall: Sculpted and long, even while keeping the fresher end of the spectrum. A judicious hand is here, allowing for lightly succulent spiced notes to flash in an out of a tart apple/lemon core. Engaging and light in profile, while still being dialed in where it counts. Drink now - 2022.

Tasted by nisid on 4/22/2020 & rated 91 points: Good acidity and spice. I was pleasantly surprised! (621 views)
Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 4/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Medium(-) yellow-golden, rather slow-moving legs @13.7% abv. On the nose tropical fruit, pienapple, mango, vanilla and herbal notes. Dry, medium-medium(+) acidity, medium alcohol and full body. Palate follows aromas of fruit supplemented with butter, lemon, apple and white pepper notes. Rich texture, creamy. Good length with brighter finish than expected. Lovely balance when all is said and done. (763 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 1/31/2020: first vintage in 1982 by Gary Farrell. He sold in 2004, to Allied Domecq. Then Beam Wine Estates, Constellation, Assensia and finally in 2011 Bill Price managing partner at Kistler (Also owns Durell and Gap’s Crown) purchased with Pete Scott former Beringer CFO/CEO.

Russian River Selections are made first.
Lemon curd aromas. Doesn’t come off as significantly oaky to the nose. Palate is a little blunt and lacks excitement. medium acid. 35% new Oak.

‘Picking earlier at 21/22 brix.’ Winemaking is different for each site to accommodate the specifics of the site. (666 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 8/30/2019 & rated 88 points: Deep yellow color. Juicy and tropical aromas, peaches, pineapple, honey, almond butter and yellow flowers. Medium+ bodied with a juicy, creamy texture but vibrant acidity. Yellow apples, pineapple and mango slices, mixed with nuanced notes of honey, salted nuts, minerals and ginger. Delicious and yummy, but it shows a lot of balance and nuance for a Russian River Chardonnay at this price point. Aged nine months in 35% new French oak, 13.7% alcohol. (797 views)

Gary Farrell

Producer website
Beginning in the late 1970s, Gary Farrell was working with seminal Russian River Valley vintners such as Davis Bynum, Joe Rochioli, Tom Dehlinger and Robert Stemmler – a group that was instrumental in showcasing
the world-class Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of the nascent Russian River Valley AVA, a breathtaking, redwood-studded wine region 55 miles north of San Francisco whose mighty river cuts a scenic swath through the
heart of Sonoma County. He made his first wine under the Gary Farrell label in 1982 and built the winery into one of the most acclaimed producers of small-lot Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the Russian River Valley.

Gary built a state-of-the-art winery in 2000 on a ridge overlooking the Russian River Valley. The barrel room and cellar reflect his legendary obsession with cleanliness, natural process flow, small-tank fermentations,
top-flight French oak cooperage and meticulous attention to detail. With its northeastern orientation, the "crush pad" houses custom belt systems for gently moving and hand-sorting grapes, European presses and
varying sizes of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The fermentation room is a winemaker’s dream with ample room between the rows of small custom-designed, open-top stainless steel tanks, raised tank pads
and pneumatic punch-down devices. The barrel rooms allow for precise temperature and humidity control to provide a perfect environment for fermentations and barrel aging.

Although he sold the winery in 2004, the Winery continues its collaborative partnerships with many of the same growers we’ve worked with for 30 years as well as Gary’s legacy of crafting wines that capture the unique
character of the vineyard.

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
