Tasted by aagrawal on 2/27/2024 & rated 89 points: Dinner with the wine group (Sole Ristorante, San Mateo): Aromatic, a bit ripe, red fruited, some garrigue spice; palate is medium bodied, medium alcohol, some remaining fruit, not showing the complexity of the best chateauneuf but good balance; medium length finish. 89 (244 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 2/9/2024 & rated 92 points: Dense, bright mid ruby. Dense, Syrah-led nose, despite the absence of Syrah. Round, no hint of 03 beyond perhaps the density. Smooth, harmonious, just a touch of dry extract on the finish. Label says 13.5% and I can believe it. Served blind, my fellow tasters were largely in the northern Rhone. **** (189 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 1/31/2022 & rated 93 points: In spite of the vintage, it was not too ripe. Dark berries, round, rich, floral, herbs with a sweet long finish. (738 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 9/25/2016 & rated 95 points: @The Progress. Surreal. Enjoyed it even more than the 03 Marie Beurrier. No decant. (2027 views)
Tasted by DougLee on 11/3/2013 & rated 91 points: Power outage, bought take-out lamb/beef gyros. Popped and poured this bottle by candlelight so no idea about the color. Nose of dense plum, violets, pepper, earth. Elegant and silky on the tongue yet full of blackberry and plummy sap at the end, particularly after 2 hours of air. Peppery and laced with kirsch and iron as well. Moderate acidity and smoothed off tannins. Continues to be a delicious drink and not over-ripe in the least. (2387 views)
Tasted by DougLee on 6/10/2013 & rated 92 points: So many things should not have worked well for this bottle: entry level wine, hot year, purchased recently with unknown provenance. But on the other hand the producer was Bonneau. Dark garnet with a ruby glint. Nose of lavender, garrigue, white pepper, musty camphor. Pulpy but elegant on the palate with layers of brambly dark plum, strawberry sweetness, currant, kirsch, and peppery notes. Lovely acidity and fine-grained tannins. Long finish of briars, red fruit and spicy sweet grip. The wine was balanced, nuanced, and flat-out delicious. (2333 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 1/19/2013 & rated 92 points: Served blind. Wow, I would have never guessed CdP or a 2003! More burgundian to me. Elegant, and certainly not over ripe. Very complex aromas. Red fruits and expansive mid palate. Good acid on the back end..Lovely. Drink now or hold to develop more complexity. (2491 views)
Tasted by essconsults on 8/27/2012 & rated 91 points: A well made wine, by a master, but perhaps "too" refined, given the vintage? Kirsch, violets, raspberry, pepper, some olive tapenade, but needs to be amped up a bit. We'll see if it develops in the next few years. (2425 views)
Tasted by KPB on 7/22/2012 & rated 91 points: A richly flavored, "very Bonneau" CDP, no sign of the excessive heat or overripeness of the vintage. A boire. (1942 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/17/2011 & rated 91 points: Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Super ripe fruit, came across as New world to me. Intense fruit followed by big spice, then lots of power and a trace of heat at the end. Lots of structure more than balances that heat. This will benefit from a decade+ in cellar. (2309 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 11/11/2011 & rated 91 points: Just excellent. Great depth but not overdone. Nice earth and leather yet not too much. No heat at all. Just great balance and a classic CdP.
Can't wait to have another bottle. (1433 views)
Tasted by Chuck Miller on 9/16/2011: Just delivered. A fairly classic old-style CdP, fairly shy nose, lean palate. For such a ripe vintage, I expected this to be riper, hotter and at least for the master Bonneau, somewhat spoofilated. But no, Bonneau sticks to his guns. Doesn't need further aging, drink now to 2015. (1413 views)
Tasted by kevincheng on 12/22/2010 & rated 90 points: Tasted at Noma. 2003 was a hot summer, but the wine still managed to build some decent complexity.
Beautiful crimson berries, sea salt and a lingering oak nose. After about 30 minutes, the deep red berries came out with the sublime strawberry nose. (1125 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
