Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/17/2024: Tasting at Ceritas (Healdsburg, California): Light, translucent color. Sweet fruit and caramel on the nose with a light touch of stemminess. Medium body. Ripe strawberry and cherry atop a soil base that is kissed by subtle oak. This also has a blood orange note. Stemmier, more tannic, and a raspier than the 2 older examples of this vineyard. Excellent potential but this needs at least a few years. (927 views)
Tasted by jjct on 6/6/2023: Fresh, vibrant, beautiful. Drinking very well. (906 views)
Tasted by domco on 5/3/2023: 3 years since the last bottle and has come together nicely. A bit muted to start but blossomed with a little air. Mix of red and blue fruits, juicy, mid to light weight. Tasty stuff. (984 views)
 Tasted by 560 B&W on 4/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Ready and lovely. 13.1% (953 views)
Tasted by stanqwash on 10/14/2022 & rated 90 points: Very fruity with some tannins on the back end. Best after an hour. Still good on day 2 but more separated. (1180 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 6/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Mid+ body, mid++ acid; on the larger side for Ceritas but no Cali candy. Much better on night two. Really needs at least another year in the cellar or a long decant. 13.1% (1432 views)
Tasted by KC Wine Enthusiast on 6/19/2021 & rated 93 points: 13.1% ABV Berry Good, blackberry & raspberry. Lingering finish. (1101 views)
Tasted by Rick 4 Wine on 4/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Drinking really well here amready though has the acid to age well. Bright cherry with a reserved garrique and cool terroir. I like the spice on the back palate and think this will evolve with more age. (1434 views)
Tasted by KC Wine Enthusiast on 2/5/2021 & rated 93 points: 13.1% ABV Blackberry, raspberry.
Second night- red raspberry dominates (1353 views)
Tasted by 87tellub on 10/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Color is medium ruby with purple. Expressive nose on the PnP, which has ripe black cherry, floral notes, herbal tea, some clean earth, an underlying savory element, but which then becomes more subtle once it sits in the glass for a few minutes at this early stage.

Medium+ weight. Nice vibrant juicy cherry, tart red and black plum, some strawberry. Potpurri or allspice. Has a pretty nice long finish of wet tea leaves. Healthy acid and a little bit of dyring tannin in the finish on the bottom cheeks. (1464 views)
Tasted by Rgentile on 9/14/2020 & rated 90 points: Splash decant and drank along side the Kutch McDougall and was certainly a step behind that bottle. Pretty wine, dark fruits and balanced. (1179 views)
Tasted by Papies on 6/26/2020 & rated 89 points: Zoom wine tasting/drinking with Cassidy Dart MW (Zoom): Bright and vibrant from colour lor to nose. Bright fruit, fruit fed nose, soft sweet feel, red fruited , raspberries and with a cherry finish. Soft and restraint for a new world Pinot as we have come to expect from this producer but maybe a touch one dimensional at this stage of its life. The group wine-argued quite a bit on this wine about it’s value, place and style but in the end this was delicious and if a touch simple we will not hold it against it. 89-90 , probably not a wine to age. (1518 views)
Tasted by mvenezia25 on 5/2/2020 & rated 90 points: Nose is very pretty, rose petals and perfumed with tart cherry in the background. The fruit is very subdued and the earthy tones with great minerality take a front seat. There’s medium + acidity, carries the light bodied wine through the finish. To me a great sense of place with its salty sea backbone. Very nice wine with some decent tannins that has a long life ahead (1078 views)
Tasted by domco on 4/12/2020: Very good but I think needs more time. A bit heavier in weight vs many of the Ceritas wines and comes across as a little more earthy as well. Curious to see how it all comes together so I’ll try and wait a few more years on our next bottle. (1067 views)
Tasted by Rgentile on 4/10/2020 & rated 90 points: Nose was plums, violets and hint of wild strawberry, sexy.
Palate: crunchy black cherries, stems showing nearly obtrusive with medium acidity and a medium plus finish.

Overall the wine was nice but no match for the Hellenthal shown beside it. The wine does still need time integrate the tannins and I hope the fruit steps more forward over the stems as well. I thought this may struggle to fully come together so we shall see but that’s what makes this so fun. (847 views)
Tasted by Sonoma-W on 3/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Excellent - great strawberry fruit (612 views)
Tasted by eoinhharkins on 3/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Expressive nose of bright red berry, red floral and some dark minerals, silky smooth texture with lots of acidity and length (1014 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 2/20/2020: Very pretty with raspberry and cranberry high toned red fruits on the nose, which also shows a young milky quality (one taster said it’s soon after malo). An hour later I thought I found some herbal nuance too, Rosemary maybe. Ultimately this wine disappointed me and is not something I’d seek out, of this bottle is representative. It’s pretty but not complex or detailed, and although I do admire and appreciate the transparent unadorned style, there just doesn’t seem to be enough material here to get excited about. (1724 views)
Tasted by eoinhharkins on 10/6/2019 & rated 92 points: Gorgeous nose of red rose petals, minerals, bright red fruits, palate is juicy on the attack with a crunchy fresh mouth feel with an enjoyable long length (1260 views)
Tasted by jgreco on 9/29/2019 & rated 94 points: The 2017 Ceritas Elliott Vineyard is a stunning wine. Bing cherry, rose, and plums. Silky smooth on the palate. This was pop and pour for me. It will probably add some weight in the next year, but you won’t regret drinking one now or in 10 years. (1198 views)
Tasted by rlove on 5/28/2019 & rated 92 points: Crunchy Pinot fruit and evident stem but what impresses here is the huge slab of minerality underpinning the 2017 Elliott. This is pretty today but will benefit from time to firm up and gain weight. (1601 views)
Tasted by Otaku Oenophile on 5/19/2019 & rated 91 points: Kool aid, cotton candy with plums and minerals. (1357 views)

Ceritas Pinot Noir Elliott Vineyard

ELLIOTT \ Monopole
Pinot Noir

We like this neighborhood. Elliot Vineyard tucks itself between Hellenthal Vineyards and the easternmost boundary of the Hirsch Vineyard. We were drawn to this site, planted in 1981 to the Mt. Eden clone of Pinot Noir, partly because of its unique perch, but primarily because its soils offer what we look for in a Pinot vineyard.

These shale soils are intermixed with decomposed marine sediments with slightly less clay than the neighboring Hellenthal vineyard. No soil amendments are added, enabling the ground to impart pure influence upon the vines. Organically and dry-farmed by the Hellenthal family, this vineyard straddles the ridge of parent rock, giving it the unique position of facing north and south. We harvest this vineyard in multiple passes, thereby obtaining maximum site expression. The resulting wine is bright and delicate, offering light perfume and excellent transparency.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
