Marsanne & viognier skins added to the ferment. Very similar wine to the 2018, but with the red fruit reticent, tobacco and apricot flavours to the fore. Medium weight and length of finish, soft powdery tannins. (1765 views) | | Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 6/21/2020: A wonderfully bright and highly perfumed nose of violets, red fruits and dark cherry. It is deep in the mouth and fleshy, yet by no means heavy. There are savoury undertones and a finish that is long and possessing real crunch. (2964 views) | | Tasted by beathy on 4/11/2020: JH 99. Needs decanting if drunk in 2020/2021. Vibrant colour, cherries and berries. Very complex, great nose, smooth finish. Excellently balanced (2573 views) | | Tasted by MichaelSy on 2/23/2020 & rated 96 points: This is a fantastic Rhone blend. Something that Australia, and the Yarra should feel really proud in having made. Very well poised, great balance, super intense with layers and layers of complexity that go into a long finish - it's a great wine that will only develop further over the next 10 years. (2713 views) | | Tasted by richard.presser on 10/13/2019 & rated 88 points: Quite reserved at this time but given its pedigree, I expect it will emerge with time. (2726 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 7/2/2019: Return to Aus; 6/23/2019-7/5/2019 (Adelaide, South Australia wine regions, Tassie, Yarra, etc.): This was a wine I really liked when I tried it a few years ago and now that we're two winemakers later I still like it. 95% Shiraz, 3% Mataro, 1% Viognier and 1% Marsanne. It's a wine that clearly needs some time to really develop into its drinking window. Right now I get mostly red flowers and red fruits. A touch intense and almost a touch jammy, but there's this balance that holds it together. I think as the fruit has time to soften I will like it quite a bit more. (2849 views) |

One of the first vineyards to be established in the modern Yarra Valley, Yarra Yering was founded in the early 1970s by Dr Bailey Carrodus. Dr. Carrodus served as winemaker until just prior to his death in September 2008 when he installed Paul Bridgeman.
Yarra Yering supplements the traditional Yarra Valley picks of cool climate pinot noir and chardonnay with an impressive array of red blends. Dr. Carrodus's first vintage (1973) brought forth his now iconic Dry Red #1 and Dry Red #2, a cabernet sauvignon and shiraz blend respectively. Since then, the range has expanded to include a number of red and white blends, as well as a some straight releases (pinot noir, shiraz, chardonnay and viognier).
The wines can vary considerably from vintage to vintage, but drinkers can bank on the releases being complex and very individual interpretations of the fruit and the terroir. Yarra Yering is not a "typical" approach to the Yarra Valley.
Dr. Carrodus's vineyard is second to none (perhaps an exaggeration...) in the Yarra Valley. It has expanded to 70+ acres of North and West facing slopes. It is adjacent to the ex-Halliday owned Coldstream Hills property, just outside of Gruyere.
Sarah Crowe joined Yarra Yering in 2013 after more than a decade in the Hunter Valley. She was lured to Victoria by the winery's impeccable reputation and the desire to produce cool-climate wines. In 2017 Sarah was named Halliday's Winemaker of the Year for the wines of 2014 – her very first vintage with Yarra Yering. Working harmoniously alongside her is Yarra Valley's homegrown vineyard manager Andrew George, who celebrates 10 years with the winery in 2022. 2017 Yarra Yering Dry Red N°2This is a wine that has many personalities and offers layers upon layers of complexity; sweet and savoury all at once. The fragrance is melting pot of violets, plums, savoury spices and bramble.
James Halliday – 99 Points Langton’s Classification – “Excellent”.
Tasting Note Aroma: This is a wine that has many personalities and offers layers upon layers of complexity; sweet and savoury all at once. The fragrance is melting pot of violets, plums, savoury spices and bramble.
Palate: Moderate in weight; the plum fruits come in all colours dialling up the flavour interest. There is cigar box and cardamom spice lending intrigue. Firm tannins ably support the fruit and texture drive the palate. This one is hard to put in a box, there is so much to love. Winemaking Fruit was hand-picked, bunch sorted and destemmed directly to the Yarra Yering half-tonne open-fermenters. As much whole berry as possible is retained to encourage perfume. Some stalks were added back to some of the fermenters in order to contribute structure and aroma.A portion of fermenters had frozen Viognier skins added to the bottom, some with Marsanne skins. The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barriques, 30% new before blending and bottling.
Varietals: 95% Shiraz, 3% Mataro, 1% Viognier, 1% Marsanne
Region: Yarra Valley (Gruyere)
Vines: Original 1969 plantings of Shiraz and Marsanne with additional Shiraz planted across the 1990’s, Mataro & Viognier drawn from vines planted from 1984 to 1995.
Cellaring: This fragrant style is approachable as a young wine but with some bottle maturation will evolve into a beautifully complex wine. This blend has a track record thus it will continue to evolve for a further 20+ years under suitable cellaring conditions should you want to cellar it for an extended period.

Wine A wine style that has always been blended for perfume, texture and spice. Fragrance enhanced by the Viognier balanced with a mixed berry fruit profile. Marsanne lends texture and volume to the palate, Mataro the floral notes and spice. Primary fruit leads on to savoury graphite and white pepper underpinned by background stalkiness and concentrated meatiness.Shiraz BlendViognierAustralia Wine Australia (Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation) | Australian Wines (Wikipedia)Victoria Wines of Victoria (Victorian Wine Industry Association)Yarra Valley Wine Yarra Valley (Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association) |
