Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 194 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by 6831 on 4/6/2024 & rated 92 points: From magnum. Day 2. Nose with sweet mashed blackberry, forest, vanilla. Briary and earthy with savory dark berry, black tea, cranberry, mineral, oak. Finishes in balance with medium length showing just a trace of sharp tannin. Well done (1360 views)
 Tasted by gregorcb on 3/18/2024 & rated 94 points: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (1727 views)
Tasted by BoulderWine on 2/10/2024 & rated 88 points: A bit pruney on the nose. It has plenty of fruit but is slightly sour on the finish. Better with food. (1835 views)
Tasted by StBlGT on 1/28/2024 & rated 93 points: A fantastic Geyserville. Blackberries, black plum, vanilla, with nice acidity and a welcoming earthiness on the tail end. Tannin level is medium, but very drinkable. It tightens up slightly on the finish with more air in the glass (I pnp...no decant). I believe the oak can mellow out some more and integrate better...but even today this is drinking amazing. Drink now - 2034. 93 points. (1943 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 1/27/2024 & rated 92 points: Deep, dark reddish-purple in color with ever so-slight clearing at the edges. Full, fragrant, attractive nose of dark fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of floral, spice & earthy/dusty notes, loam, briary/bramble, a bit of dark cocoa & coffee, minerals & a slight touch of oak/vanilla in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe dark fruit flavors of dark cherries, boysenberries & plums with spices, cocoa, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but at 7 years of age, it is approaching its peak of development. Although it may hold here for several more years, I doubt will develop further with additional aging. A blend of 68% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane, 12% Petite Sirah & 2% Alicante Bouschet. It's wonderful how Ridge wines age so well. (2000 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 1/26/2024 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby color, bright with medium depth and some clarity. Aromas of blackberry & plum, both ripe and fresh, with vanilla bean, allspice, fresh violets, and black tea. Fresh black fruit on the palate, open and expressive, with integrated floral and spice notes consistent from the nose. Refined and elegant on the palate, medium-plus weight, with juicy acidity and finely smooth medium tannins, finishing with succulent fruit, florals and acidity. Drinking well. (1761 views)
Tasted by Colowine on 1/6/2024: Blackberry and bramble. Well balanced and tasty (2033 views)
Tasted by talbot61 on 12/25/2023: This wine was very well-behaved last night -- structured and restrained, more classical than opulent. And, therefore, a little bit disappointing. I'm not taking the Geyserville along to the party because I am expecting it to sip some sherry and sit demurely in the corner. I kinda want it to be swigging back the bourbon and dancing on the tables. (1780 views)
Tasted by gstutz on 12/22/2023 & rated 90 points: Blackberry nose with other blue fruit. Briar fruit on first taste fades into a linear fruit driven wine but not jammy. Always a good example of Zin blend made in a more serious style. Great with pizza. (1907 views)
Tasted by WineGonzo on 12/1/2023 & rated 93 points: This was good on PnP (maybe 90) but just outstanding the next day (93). (1998 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 11/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Excellent now but don’t wait too much. (2171 views)
Tasted by thestuer on 8/13/2023 & rated 90 points: A decent geyserville. A bit plummy to my palate (vs some of the better vintages like 2012), and a bit less acidity than I would hope. I'm torn on my remaining bottles; the tannin will better soften and integrate, but I'm concerned there isn't an acid structure to keep it fresh enough and prevent the plumminess (Alicante Bouschet?) from taking over. I'll pace consumption every 6mo or so and we'll see. (2678 views)
Tasted by Mona&JanPetter on 5/16/2023 & rated 85 points: Meget god til lam. Masse lukt og kraftig smak. (3181 views)
Tasted by Akatz821 on 5/6/2023 & rated 90 points: Wait until it’s 10th anniversary I’d say, but still quite pretty. Ridge is always a winner (2969 views)
Tasted by Swan 60 on 4/16/2023 & rated 91 points: Great example of Ridge wines. It needed over an hour to breath. There were still lots of tannins so if you like a smoother wine on the palate I would wait a couple of years. (3063 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 4/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Drink now. Maybe fading ? (2762 views)
Tasted by DSaenz on 3/14/2023 & rated 90 points: I'm inline with a few of the other tasters who found this wine to have soft or medium to low tannins and acidity. I struggled to find the fruit profiles mentioned in other notes but still a good wine. I wouldn't hesitate to open another bottle. (3005 views)
Tasted by markandsusanw on 2/1/2023 & rated 92 points: My first Ridge in quite a while and forgot how much I enjoyed this one-time, go-to. Not super flashy but a well-structured, well-made wine. Tart cherry opens to richer blueberry notes, but never succumbs to fruit bomb status with intact tannins, mineral midtones and acid pop to finish. Good stuff with years of life left. Sorry to see the last of it in my cellar. (3187 views)
Tasted by Ironmartin on 1/19/2023: Mkt good, bäst av de zinfandels som provides (salo, devils candy) (3018 views)
Tasted by Hockeywine on 11/24/2022 & rated 91 points: Delicious and well balanced. Lots of black fruit and baking spice. Moderate alcohol and surprisingly soft tannin. (3043 views)
Tasted by Stephen Rash on 11/13/2022: Great on day 1, but just Wow on Day 2!! On day 2, aromas of blackberries, prunes, roasted meat, earthy loam, and black pepper on the nose. Tastes of blackberries, cherries, and black pepper on the palate. Balanced and elegant!! (3542 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 11/6/2022 & rated 93 points: Wife: 94.
Excellent now. (3355 views)
Tasted by suarezd on 7/10/2022 & rated 84 points: Too much acetone, cough syrup, chemical jam on the palate for my taste. (4450 views)
Tasted by talbot61 on 6/6/2022 & rated 92 points: If a friendly space alien asked me to explain California wine, I might just hand over a bottle of Ridge Geyserville 2017. I know, I know, lots of dedicated and intelligent California winemakers are working to move away from this model of California wine. I know, I know, California is a huge state, with hundreds of grape varieties and blends, and hundreds of climates and styles. But still, there are gods and monuments, totem poles that loom over the landscape. This oaky smooth powerful beast, oh so drinkable, is the apotheosis of a traditional style of California wine, one of the monuments in a crowded landscape. No sediment, so no need to decant. Might gain some complexity with age, but really no need to wait. Open. Drink. Repeat. (4567 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 5/19/2022 & rated 94 points: Soooooo good !
Of course it’s jammy and over the top but « ne boudez pas votre plaisir » we say in french. (4138 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
