Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Sun_Ship on 4/20/2024 & rated 93 points: Bright, deep ruby in colour. The nose is intense and perfumed, with suggestions of dark raspberries, plums, griotte cherries and parma violets. Full and slightly creamy, the silky mouthfeel brings flavours of smoke, roast espresso and blackberry, with a frame of vanillin oak. Floral, vivid and aromatic. With roast lamb rump, sweetbreads, morels and salsa verde. 93+ (472 views)
Tasted by 831900_ on 2/26/2024 & rated 93 points: Elegant nose, elegant mouthfeel, elegant if somewhat candied finish. Dusty raspberry and cherry. Some spice. Really nice. (859 views)
 Tasted by pren on 4/18/2023 & rated 91 points: 尝。气味比20收紧,但是类似的风格,口中也很好,今晚不如20giving (2220 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 4/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Tasted during a visit to the estate in Beaune. This was nicely aromatic, cigar box notes and vanilla along with a ripe red cherry fruit. Fresh palate with a firm tannic structure. (2199 views)
Tasted by Sun_Ship on 3/30/2023 & rated 92 points: The perfumed nose offers crushed red fruit and florals with a dark, brambly edge and a core of sweet liqueur. Still quite primary, light coffee, earth and spicy chocolate notes emerge, alongside a lick of vanilla. Medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, with a weight of dense, dark-tinged fruit and some grip. There's a slightly creamy finish, with a touch of blood orange. 92+ (1954 views)
Tasted by super007 on 11/26/2022 & rated 93 points: Great wine.

Rich dark fruits, fresh crushed raspberries in the middle amongst the darker and richer flavors. Nice tannins.

Very balanced wine. (2273 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 11/25/2022: late on Thxgiving night, so no details, but do remember this being OK but not tantalizing... good acidity and felt like red fruit but foursquare... recommend waiting until 2030 to open...on this night this was something like 90-91, but I am hopeful for 92-93 with age (1973 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 7/24/2022 & rated 94 points: Dark fruited, spicy nosy that was effusive on popping. Darkly concentrated burgundy. Drinking well now; dark fruits and spice cake obscure minor floral elements. Balanced. Lacking a little crispness at the finish makes wonder whether the acidity will hold up for long term aging. Very enjoyable. Check in again in 5 years. (1878 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/25/2022 & rated 91 points: A Few Miscellaneous Wines in Burgundy, Outside of Big Meals and Tastings; 6/21/2022-6/27/2022 (Burgundy): Popped-and-poured by Joe D then enjoyed over an hour+. Fleshy, ripe black fruits with lots of tannin and power, yet accessible enough to easily enjoy already. But certainly better from 2030 forward. (2426 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 6/16/2022: no notes, but this was awesome (1624 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 6/3/2022 & rated 91 points: Académie des Cinquante Burgundy visit; 6/1/2022-6/3/2022: Relatively sweet style, but with the minerality and structure to back it up, very good persistence. (2044 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 5/18/2022 & rated 91 points: Tasted at the Drouhin cellar. Lots going on here with funky, red fruit note with flavours of red cherry plus bbq meat and savoury notes and spice. Very long with lots of complexity despite its relative youth. (1471 views)
Tasted by shifter on 8/29/2021 & rated 93 points: Amazing nose with red fruit and lots of spice. Lovely primary fruit on the palate and spices and herbs on the lingering finish. Drinking very well still early. (2647 views)
Tasted by beatles on 6/15/2021 flawed bottle: Very different from last time. Reduced nose, buttermilk galore, some vinegar - probably a damaged sample
#onlinetasting (2762 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 3/26/2021 & rated 89 points: An atypical burgundy interms of weight and profile. As noted by others very rich and ripe, new world in style. Rich red and black fruit, cherries, licorice, some spice and herbs with coaxing but over powered by the fruit. Palate is very heavy and somewhat cloying at this stage. Curious how this ages. Not a style for those looking for a traditional burgundy experience. (2493 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 2/18/2021: Deep, dark, sweet and fortunately not plodding, but it makes you think. maintains lightness if not particularly fresh with dark cherry and licorice....I’m trying to decide if I like it

Had this again since I left the last TN hanging, and what I’d say is this is more typical of Oregon than France (2711 views)
Tasted by shifter on 1/16/2021 & rated 94 points: Intoxicating and complex nose full of spearmint, bright red fruit and spice garden in a cool mountain air. Delectably layered palate starting with red and black fruits, moving to spices and herbs and fanning out into a long, smooth and balanced finish. This is so open and beautiful at the moment, but very primary and showing the goods to age quite well. (2689 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 1/14/2021: NR as this was way too young, and actually felt a little shut down (or at least I hope so)... mostly structure and less body showing, nice acidity and lively in that respect, just muted flavor (1733 views)
Tasted by JJYoyo on 12/11/2020 & rated 94 points: Very young and coltish in the sense that all of its impressive constituent aspects are currently splayed in all directions like the legs of a very young horse (ok, foal-ish?) but this has the markings of greatness. Surprisingly more reticent nose than palate right now, something that I am sure will straighten out in time. Nose of black cherry, a little kola nut, chocolate?, along with a surprising stalkiness. Muted stoniness. After about an hour of air the tannins really start showing up. Right now, they are a little forbidding but I am absolutely sure they will resolve very nicely in time.
Palate has a powerful punch of dark berry, exotic spice (cardamom, allspice) and maybe some orange zest. This shows all the signs of being awesome in about 10-15 years. It is a delightful young wine now, but if I had to guess it tastes like it is going to shut down fairly soon. A terrific CdM with all of the good aspects of Beaune and none of the dry excesses. Like a Beaune crossed with a Vosne Romanee.
Score : 94+. Relative to expectations:++ (1839 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/24/2020: if you dont like this wine then there is nothing laurent can do for you. Highest density planted in burgundy and he notes perfectly situated. 1990 organic. 20% new oak. Licorice and white pepper and spice and he thinks its an amazing vintage for this wine. This apparently a great representation of the vineyard. And it is indeed quite fine. (1871 views)
Tasted by acyso on 9/17/2020: Burgundy & Oregon with TCWC (Chicago, IL): Certainly too young, the nose here shows a touch of oak and some lactones, which are also quite prominent on the palate. This is quite difficult to evaluate in light of its youth, but there is a pronounced ripeness (par for the course, given the vintage). Lots of sweet black cherry and some coffee, but also a backwards, tannic backbone that keeps this from becoming oozy. Not particularly worthwhile to drink now, but this has the fruit and structure to go the distance. (2602 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/15/2019 & rated 93 points: Tasted vis-a-vis the Beaune Grève, this both more creamy and more chambolle-like, more elegant; fine structure, generous wine. 93+ point
#Drouhin (2097 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/2/2019: Joseph Drouhin Cellar Visit and Tasting with Vero (Beaune): Barrel tasting at the domaine. Very big, nearly fat and rich. Powerful with a very impressive finish. 91-92 point potential. (2330 views)

Joseph Drouhin

Producer Website

Joseph Drouhin always had a passion for wine, and in 1880 in Burgundy, he founded the independent company that still bears his name. Today, his great grandchildren, Philippe, Véronique, Laurent and Frédéric, run the family-owned company from their ancestors house. Each has their own personality, but together, they share a common passion for the vine and the wine. Day after day, they strive for harmony, the hallmark of Joseph Drouhin wines.

Founded in Beaune in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin’s cellars have spread from the historical Cellars of the Dukes of Burgundy and the Kings of France in Beaune (12th-18th centuries) to the Moulin de Vaudon, an 18th Century watermill in Chablis.

A rigorous attention to detail, self-imposed discipline, a desire to learn, a rigorous sense of values, passion and daring, are the qualities that have been handed down through the generations, together with the art of winemaking and a never ending search for quality.

The Joseph Drouhin Domaine was assembled parcel by parcel over the years and today comprises 73 hectares (182.5 acres) of vineyards in Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Chablis. It is one of the most important domains in Burgundy, with more than two thirds of the vineyards classified as Premier and Grand Crus.

Today, the fourth generation is at the helm. Each has his role to play in imposing the Family “ Charter of Excellence”. Charter of Excellence

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
