Tasted by SuperSomm on 10/15/2023: Pale gold colour. Medium and developing nose with yellow apples, lemon, cheese, cream, smoke, mushroom, forest floor and wet stone. Medium taste of yellow apples, lemon, melon, pineapple, cheeses, cream, smoke, mushrooms, forest floor and wet stone. Long and dry finish. High acidity. Medium body. An outstanding Muscadet that has matured beautifully. Drink now or over the next couple of years. Goes well with cheeses, fish or shellfish. (41 views)
Tasted by JohnSh on 2/28/2021 & rated 90 points: This has aged well, but may at peak now. A light straw colour and a nose of minerals and slight rotten fruits (in a good way). Medium to full bodied, with good intensity, and a slight butterscotch note on the long, minerally finish. Almost a cross of Chablis and Muscadet (A-). (384 views)
Tasted by SadEdjo on 4/11/2020 & rated 90 points: morning pee yellow; initially served too cold but as it warmed up it opened it up significantly; stone and restrained fruit; hint of sweet; smooth; drink up (474 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 7/25/2019 & rated 79 points: Fyldig med myr-vekster og gulplomme, svak syre (508 views)
Tasted by JohnSh on 1/13/2019 & rated 91 points: This has aged well. Still youthful, even, with a light straw colour and a nose of minerals and slight rotten fruits (in a good way). Medium to full bodied, with great concentration and intensity, and a slight butterscotch note on the long, glistening finish. Very happy to have one left! (A-). (633 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 12/22/2018 & rated 90 points: Medium gold color - crystal clear. Medium aromas of citrus/ herbal with great minerality. Medium palate of citrus - rather linear with some possible phenolic bitterness noted. I agree with previous reviewers that this wine is not at all showing any age, no oxidation at all. (620 views)
Tasted by SuperSomm on 9/4/2018: Light straw yellow colour. Ripe yellow apples, minerals and nutty cheeses with hints of stone on the nose. Taste of ripe yellow apples, nuts and minerals. Long and dry finish filled with minerals. A good wine. Goes well with shellfish, fish or cheeses. (160 views)
Tasted by Pontifax on 12/30/2017 & rated 89 points: Not a wine for the novice.... must be decanted at least 1 hour.
On nose: initially an unpleasant scent of wet cardboard......but after 30 minutes, green pear skin and sea salt aromas.
On palate : Green pear, sea salt, minerals and tart citrus the acidity is there but muted.
As it warmed, it fleshed out VERY slightly , but developed subtle hints of gala apple and celery after an hour into the last glasses sampled.
Not for everybody, this wine made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, has more austerity than a sauvignon blanc, and less fruit.... . but impresses with its longevity!...18 years old and NO sign of oxidation.... a very suitable accompaniment to shell fish and oysters, but nothing heavier.... . or may last a few more years.
A new experience for me. (789 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 7/17/2017 & rated 91 points: Very light yellow. Pineapples, lemon curd, tangerine, and ripe apple. I was sceptical when this was recommended because of the Vinetage but this did not show its age at all. Some minerality but more lemon and less steel than most Chablis and less oak than white Burgundies. (1064 views)
Tasted by jleknes on 7/1/2017 flawed bottle: Corked (1163 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 9/17/2016 & rated 91 points: A private lunch (Restaurant Hedone *, Chiswick, London, UK): Intense but youthful colour, light for age, still with a green tinge; rich but fresh nose, salinity and beautifully developed fruit, aromatic green herbs, hint of tobacco, deep; rich and juicy palate, rounded and silky, completely developed but still perfectly fresh, beautifully balanced, floral flavours; good resonance and length. Delightful. (1459 views)
Tasted by JohnSh on 9/19/2015 & rated 92 points: Light golden in colour. Minerality plus on the nose, with some lemon as well. Very dry on the medium-full bodied palate, with the minerality (or whatever it is) at the forefront, but there's a nice richness and slight lemon notes. Somewhat chablis like, as its like sucking on a rock, quite refreshing, and yet rich and broad as well.Still young for a 15 year old Muscadet. Quite tasty and nice QPR for a 15 year old wine (A-)! (1056 views)
Tasted by Enfant sauvage on 9/11/2015: My last bottle. Similar to the others: some really nice old muscadet bones, but it's marred by a mothball/urinal cake funk. The funks blows off a bit with air, but never quite enough to make it good. (1037 views)
Tasted by Enfant sauvage on 5/29/2015: While this is decent for $20, based on this bottle, I'd call my previous note a bit generous. There's a mothball/urinal cake-y thing going on here that isn't very pleasant. Didn't really blow off this time either, at least not on day 1. I ended up giving away the rest before I could try it on day 2. (986 views)
Tasted by Enfant sauvage on 5/14/2015: Some funk, which blew off. Fairly typical aged muscadet that softened with air. Lots of minerality, some salinity, and still plenty of decent citrus fruit. Nothing to write home about, but for $20 one could do much worse. (730 views)
Tasted by doubledoc on 10/21/2014 & rated 92 points: Had this one with the giant seafood platter @BalthazarNYC. Pop and pour.
Very nice muscadet. Salt, lemon curd, zippy acidity, and a nice long finish. Very little sweetness, which was fine because the oysters and clams were absolutely dessert like in nature.

Phish: 12/15/95 Tweezer Reprise>Jim. Solid energy for an older jam. Machine gun trey, whole band improvising, soaring melodies. This is why we cellar wine and also phish CDs. (1023 views)

Melon de Bourgogne

Melon de Bourgogne or Melon is a variety of white grape grown primarily in the Loire Valley region of France. It is also grown in North America. It is best known through its use in the white wine Muscadet.

In the U.S., Federal law prevents "Muscadet" from being used for American-produced wine; only the full name of the grape, or the shortened "Melon" can be used.

Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine

Muscadet (mus-ka-DAY) is a region in the western part of the Loire valley, near the city of Nantes. White wines from Muscadet are made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. They tend to be light in color and body, and are intensely mineral driven. They are thought to be a perfect complement to raw oysters from the nearby coast. Muscadets are gleefully paired, though, with any fresh shellfish or other seafood.

There are a couple of appellations in Muscadet, the best of which is considered to be Muscadet de Sevre et Maine. And the best bottles from that appellation are aged sur-lie, or on the lees, the musty mix of yeasts and other post-fermentation solids. This aging provides flavor complexity that can be missing in other bottles.
