Tasted by ricknat1 on 4/30/2024 & rated 95 points: truly excellent bottle, i double decanted at 2 and put into decanter for 4 hours before serving. wine was smooth as silk with everything resolved and in balance. i would give it less time in the future as it started to get a porty back end in the glass after a while. this wine needs age. the 90 and 96 served along with it was fine but not in the same class.
score could go up with smarter decanting (66 views)
Tasted by jjoko on 12/26/2023 & rated 98 points: I can't believe this is so youthful with all the time it spent in the bottle. Amazingly delicious with nose of strawberry, rasberry, herbs, cedar, and orange peel. I think I can drink this vintage after 30 years from now with proper cellaring. (902 views)
Tasted by AaronMaxwell on 8/5/2023 & rated 96 points: Still unbelievably young. Can’t believe how much life this still has. (1240 views)
Tasted by RobinTeo on 11/12/2022: To be entered (1690 views)
Tasted by beatles on 9/6/2022 & rated 96 points: A legend, still not up top the 1970; smoother, richer, spicier, sweeter.

Tasted by GonzaloManzaneda on 2/5/2022 & rated 98 points: Roza la perfección. Mentolados en nariz , tostados, chocolate negro, complejidad y absoluta finura. Toneladas de capas, puedes seguir oliendo y sacando mil matices. Color que no denota la edad. Tremendo vino. (2647 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 4/30/2021 & rated 96 points: Unico + BBQ Makes for Quite the Night (Los Olivos, CA): I bought two of these some years ago, and the first disappointed, relatively speaking. My worries for this bottle were entirely unfounded. Even the appearance of the wine was barely distinguishable from all but the youngest served as part of the vertical, with very slight bricking at the edges as the only tell. Powerful aromatics, not shy or fading in the least: smoke, kirsch and a mild mintiness. Caramel and nut flavors join in on the palate, with a seamless, glycerined texture. Again, we found that the ageability really allows the Bordeaux component to elevate the wine to an extraordinary level. Nipped by the 1981 as WOTN, but only just. (3310 views)
Tasted by Lype on 10/17/2020: Tar, black olives, bright cherry flauvors, hints of strawberries, fresh and light bodied, fruit is still present but getting gradually thinner so the acidity is more accentuated than in 1953 and 1960 in the same flight. (3410 views)
Tasted by G_H on 6/26/2020: Farnsburg best bottle: An oxidized bottle tasting more like a dry PX with note of malt, walnuts and candied sugar.

Not the way it is supposed to taste but delicious never the less (3392 views)
Tasted by Jammy Wine on 5/28/2020 & rated 94 points: The 1962 Vega Sicilia Unico was awarded the perfect 100 points by Neal Martin a few years ago. Slightly disappointingly, the 1962 was the weakest of the trio Vega Sicilia lineup of 1962, 1968 and 1970.

This 1962 is incredibly young for its age, the maturity is almost comparable to a Bordeaux from 1989! Restrained fresh dark fruits, dark plums, kirsch, smoked meat and integrated vanilla wood. Deep flavours that are lively and firm (at least for the first hour).

A gentle beast.

Tasted by aquacongas on 4/18/2020 & rated 97 points: Legends (MG): blind
I had this wine twice before, one was perfect and this was close. Still at his peak, classical style and timeless, not oxidative , still fresh. 99 (3334 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/19/2019 & rated 88 points: Brutish and rough next to old Petrus. Sorry! (2773 views)
Tasted by La Flama Blanca on 9/17/2019 & rated 98 points: Been chasing the dragon on this one and it finally slayed!!! A perfect bottle of ‘62 Único en MAGNUM!

First time out of Magnum for me, I’ve had other 750s of this Legend, but they didn’t live up to the hype of this bottle.

Complex and elegant. Medium, finely grained tannins, ripe cherry, fresh leather and scorched earth. Drank like an elegant Margaux in its structure, but distinctively Spain with the faintest telltale of dill on the nose. (1386 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 9/7/2019 & rated 86 points: Acker 2019/09; 9/5/2019-9/7/2019 (Le Bernardin Prive, Marea): Deeper nose, sour and unbalanced. 86 (2537 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/7/2019: Probably the WOTD. It was pretty impressive. Really delicious old school unico. Lots of spices. Red fruits. Really tasty. This is special. (2143 views)
Tasted by rnyrny79 on 8/4/2019 & rated 98 points: Wow, what a great and complex wine. Great nose but really interesting palate with nuances I have not tried before (agree with other notes here regarding flavor spectrum).

Remember to decant for min. 3 hours as there is an unpleasant tangy note initially that completely goes away with long enough decant.

Can’t wait to try the 68! (2096 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 5/31/2019 & rated 94 points: CC. Sweet, plummy aromatics. Attractively clean, quite sweet palate. (2259 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 5/25/2019 & rated 92 points: Advanced (but not to the point of being flawed), with a badly deteriorating underside of the cork signaling less than perfect storage, though I was assured perfect provenance. Nonetheless a beguiling and rewarding wine. Nose of smoke, cherry and mild eucalyptus, a touch raisiny. Caramel and nut flavors join in on the palate, which is on the thin side rather than creamy in texture, consistent with the advanced state of the wine. Faint vanilla and leather on the finish. (1886 views)
Tasted by Elpaninaro on 5/3/2019: bright red young color, chocolate, dark fruits and polished earth on the nose, on the palate fine depth with a smooth and seamless fruit leading into a long and fragrant finish, on the palate cherry and intense blueberry notes, chiseled grey stone edges, there is a lot going on here but the wine is still very primary and will need more time to fully reveal itself, drinking beautifully today but worth saving a few to see what comes in time. I have not had many vintages of Vega Sicilia Unico, but this strikes me as a particularly elegant example.

*****, now to 2040+ (2117 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/10/2018: We bought tickets to the Spanish wine tasting mainly because of this wine. And I must say totally worth it. This was knock your socks off good. I believe Unicos need at least 30 years or so to start to come around but at this age they are just singing. It's a beautiful wine. To be honest, the oak is still there, but mostly integrated. Comes across as a bit more vanilla. Lots of leather. It's a special wine. Feels like it might be just in that perfect drinking window although I don't think it's going anywhere fast. (2419 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 11/8/2018 & rated 94 points: Lipstick and nutmeg aromatics. Intense, fruity and most importantly clean. (2293 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 10/10/2018 & rated 95 points: Beautifully mature, red fruited with loads of cigar box, especially on the finish. It opened up over the course of 90 minutes and gained the heft necessary to bring it to another level (2170 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 5/5/2018 & rated 100 points: Perfect bottle. Served blindly. Nobody at the table guesed VS. I was "sure" it was not Bx, Burgundy and Australia. I thought more to an old California than VS. This time it deserves 100 because nose and palate are perfect. Still a subtle cherry and dark berries fruit, cigarbox, violet and a Burgundy extract sweetness. Elegant, dense and concentrated and a sublime fine finish. 100

The 70 also served blindly had a big opponent but nevertheless a tremendous wine. More Bordeaux style and still very fresh. Not reached his peak. 97+ (3717 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 12/10/2017 & rated 99 points: Wine Monuments Man Chapter 3 (Berens am Kai 1 star Restaurant): Die Nase ist unschlagbar. Dezente Kirschen, etwas Leder, null Oxidationsnoten, keine Vanille.
Tasted by Fatty Cat on 2/24/2017 & rated 90 points: Unico tasting (27 different vintages) at the Rheingau Gourmet Festival 2017: clear ruby colour; not much aroma traffic in the nose; in the mouth some black and red berries; medium body with a butter like texture; the wine had a medium acidity.

Vintages 3rd flight: 1922-1940-1942-1953-1960-1961-1962 (3923 views)

Tempranillo Blend

Tempranillo is the backbone of wines made ihvhhcn the best well-known Spanish regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but is also grown as far afield as Mexico and Australia.

As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate - but with a rustic edge. The Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumers . Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak - add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle - and occasionaly not-so-subtle - leathery mouthfeel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
