Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mark1npt on 7/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Remarkably fruity and enjoyable. Great from the pnp, needed no air time whatsoever. Dark fruit, sweet tannins that are integrated and resolved. A true Cali Syrah. No hints of overbearing bacon or meat or game or, you get the idea.....quite a nice drinker. (2030 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 12/22/2022: Needed a pnp to satisfy the masses (well, just P and S) while my other wine decanted. This was ready to go, big ripe fruit, pepper and spice. I wasn’t paying enough attention to rate but really enjoyed. (2021 views)
Tasted by YankeeRobio on 11/11/2022 & rated 94 points: Outstanding QPR. Black and blue fruit, slight bacon fat and pepper (987 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 8/10/2022 & rated 94 points: Excellent, very smooth and balanced. I would not have guessed Syrah
Drinking very well now and I would not expect it to get any better with further ageing. (1273 views)
Tasted by oceanspirit on 7/1/2022 & rated 92 points: This wine is in it's prime! First sip 2 hours from cellar, and in bottle airing. Nice black raspberry color. Slightly acidic, more so on the swallow. Mineral finish front of tongue, well balanced. Ready to enjoy with steak! (1108 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 2/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Dark, inky, ripe and rich. (1569 views)
Tasted by TC16 on 12/25/2021 & rated 94 points: What a great pnp. Really rich and warm Syrah. Sweet fruits with an undertone of olive and smoky Syrah goodness at the end. Not classic in any sense of the word, but perhaps we need to start calling Syrah's like this "new classic." (879 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 11/23/2021 & rated 95 points: POP-mistake, drank too young-mistake, but this was soo good, very smooth for a young syrah, loved it. (923 views)
Tasted by Franken Berry on 10/4/2021 & rated 93 points: This drank best on first pour. Rich blue fruits, violets on the nose, spice, leather on the finish. I often find Mike Smith syrahs to be a bit medicinal when young, but this had none of that. Very tasty (1251 views)
Tasted by oceanspirit on 9/3/2021 & rated 100 points: Aired this wine for 2 hours. Spicer then I expected. Full nose of spice with an acidic finish. This wine would be great with spicy dishes. Continue cellaring or air sufficiently. (887 views)
Tasted by Gnieboer on 4/12/2021 & rated 94 points: Delicious. Remarkably full bodied despite being fairly translucent on pour. Beautifully balanced cool weather Syrah, with the middle notes more focused on smoke and game vice olive tapenade. (1122 views)
Tasted by nrjessup on 10/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Dark berry notes with an underlying vegetal and herbal tone to it on the nose. It's ruby red in color with a medium body. (1562 views)
Tasted by nrjessup on 8/19/2020 & rated 92 points: Drinking fruit forward with a moderately floral tone to it up front. Popped and poured and consumed a good 2/3rds sans food. Very approachable and finely balanced. Medium finish. (1233 views)
Tasted by nrjessup on 5/10/2020 & rated 94 points: Aerated straight from bottle to glass this time. The palette has a little bite to it, getting the pepper tones pushing thru in here. The fruit is subdued on the nose but a beautiful baking aroma is upfront. The color is a garnet/purple with medium viscosity and medium to full bodied. (1307 views)
Tasted by nrjessup on 4/3/2020 & rated 95 points: Two days later and this one is still bobbing and weaving. The nose is a little flabbier with strawberry jam upfront with plenty of minerals and herbal notes mixed in. Surprised how well it’s held up likely a testament to its age worthiness. Bumping a point for that reason. (1272 views)
Tasted by nrjessup on 4/1/2020 & rated 94 points: Wonderfully balanced with a deft touch of berries in the rear and a hefty dose of minerality up front on the nose. The color is deep garnet and swirling medium bodied. Mouthfeel is quite smooth with very well heeled heat/tannins. Kicking myself for not purchasing more, I feel like these are much more suited to my taste of syrah vs. Myriad Sangiacomo Syrah. (1282 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
