Community Tasting Notes (average 95.8 pts. and median of 96 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by HenryCellar on 4/28/2024: Helen says too jammy. Brian says give it some time. (201 views)
Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 3/17/2024 & rated 91 points: Nice modern-styled elegant CdP. Very fruit driven, soft and sweet tannin, goes down ever so easily. Underneath all this relaxed ease, there is enough material to last for years - the more so as this wine is extremely well balanced. (643 views)
Tasted by oakville72 on 2/18/2024 & rated 96 points: Fantastic stuff and oh-so-drinkable now, tho will last a decade or more. Enjoyed with black ink infused linguine, Manila clams, calamari, shrimp, fresh fish, chardonnay, fresh tomato and pomodoro sauce at Foretti's in Corona del Mar, CA. (970 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/21/2023: 100% Grenache, old vineyard, old vines, vines from the great-grandfather, and the youngest is 84 and the oldest is 106. They kept it through phylloxera because its all on sandy soil .Its on day two so a little bit dropped off to me. Whole bunch if I caught it right. Really rich and massive and not going strong. Wonder what day one was like? (3437 views)
Tasted by AlyssaRock12 on 1/30/2023: Wine ranked #2 of 12 for 2019 CdP tasting.

Nose: violet, floral, pie crust, sugary, blueberry; very expressive

Palate: Smooth w/ tangy acidity; bright & lively; full - body

Tasted by chatters on 8/9/2022: Second Tuesday club - 2019 Rhone Valley Red and Whites (Le Petit Flor Restaurant, Sydney): Slightly perfumed, red over black fruit, a little sweet spice and alcohol warmth, liquorice, black pepper. Juicy, dense, chewy, but fruit persists beneath this - red and black berry, tannins are softly textured, a little fruitness here as well. Nice. (3787 views)
Tasted by RhoneWho on 7/24/2022 & rated 98 points: Updated with supplement notes:
Last weekend we drank another bottle since two months ago. Just as enjoyable as before. This time we were able to pick up beautiful aromatics of floral (lavender) and blue fruits bouquet reminding me of drinking 2018 Andremily Grenache or 2014 SQN Shakti, though P Usseglio may not been as concentrated as those Califonian style.

Original Tasting Notes:
Darn. This can be one of top wines of 2019 vintage. We did a vertical tasting of 2016, 2017 and 2019 vintages this weekend. For 2016, please see my separate tasting notes from last year. Today 2016 is re-affirming last year’s tasting notes; and is still as amazing and electrifying as before, full of vibrancy yet with great elegance. It's a perfect wine (99-100) that can age very well into 15+ years. I'm glad I have a few magnum for future drinking.

First word out of my mind after first sip of 2019 vintage is finesse! I am amazed by the seamless texture of 2019 vintage gliding the palate, which is more weightless than both 2016 and 2017 drinking side by side. It has both rich dark and red fruit flavor profile with balanced acidity. The aromatics of both black and red berries intermixed with bouquet garni in the back drop is an elegant expression of grenache! Give it a 2-3 years, it can hit the triple digit like the 2016. I have no problem drinking 2019 even ahead of 2016! My current preliminary rating range is 98-100. 98+ for now given just released but will definitely improve with revisiting next 1-2 years.

The beauty of doing horizontal tasting is to appreciate how yearly climate can affect the grape phenolic and hence wine profile. I have had 2017 a few times last 2 years; and it's full of energy with a slight higher acidity than both 2016 and 2019 vintage on sensory. It has a redder flavor profile and almost Burgundian-like on the nose but has a full body than a Burgundy. I recommend drinking 2016 or even 2019 first and leave 2017 (96-98) for a few more years to put on some weight and integration.

We added a side show with 2010 Livio Sassetti Pertamali Brunello di Montalcino (JS 100). I was originally worry the burly with dark dry prune flavor of Brunello could have dominated the Cuvee de mon Aieul. No! I am so impressed that the grenache can hold its feet and standing shoulder to shoulder. In any day, I will still pick a CDP over a Brunello or Barolo. (3671 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 1/9/2022 & rated 97 points: Deep, floral, rich and fragrant, notes of flowers, black raspberries, kirsch, peppery cherries, espresso, thyme and smoke pop with little effort. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, lusciously textured and round, leaving you with layers of sweet, spicy, red berries and herbs. Here you find real sticking power as the wine stays with you on the palate through the endnote. The wine is made with 100% old vine Grenache. Drink from 2024 - 2039 (5144 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 3/14/2020 & rated 99 points: Barrel sample Nr4 (Grenache sur sable); WOW Very saline nose, cerise griotte, iodé... Superb taste of iode and salinity, super delicious, nice tension, lenght of > 60 sec. (5176 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
