Community Tasting Notes (average 88.9 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 306 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mingles on 4/14/2024 & rated 89 points: Reflects the season somewhat-a little four square up front. With a couple of hours decant it opens up a little. Enjoyable honest claret. (419 views)
Tasted by ZaphodB on 3/29/2024 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby red with red brim. Lovely, mature nose with notes of underbrush, leather, corints and prunes. Mouthfeel is mature, velvet smooth, still with vital fruit, velvet tannins, nice acidity and notes of black currants, plums, underbrush, leather and some fresh tobacco.

This drinks remarkably well now, still with fine fruit and velvet tannins. My only remark here is that the finish is quite short, but this is almost surprisingly good for the price tag, and considering that 2006 is a relatively weak vintage.

Will probably not get any better than it already is, but I'd expect this to keep well together for the next few years. (578 views)
Tasted by ThompsonandFrench on 3/2/2024 & rated 90 points: Picked up a case in the F sale, so nice to return to this excellent value wine.

1 hour rabbit decant sufficient.

Fully mature. Forest fruits and mulberry. I like the latter, but only just. Soft, resolved and very popular with guests.

Drink. (765 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 1/26/2024 & rated 91 points: Nothing to add to previous note - reproduced below, although my wife thought it had more fruit than previously. This is drinking beautifully. You can hold but why wait?

Dark garnet. Pronounced nose. Dried cassis, dark cherry, blackcurrant leaf, earth, cedar, tobacco, smoke. Dry, medium fine tannins, a little drying on the gums, palate similar to the nose, medium+ finish. Everything in balance. (1230 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 9/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Similar to previous note - mature Bordeaux, no hurry to drink, but won’t improve further.

Dark garnet. Pronounced nose. Dried cassis, dark cherry, blackcurrant leaf, earth, cedar, tobacco, smoke. Dry, medium fine tannins, a little drying on the gums, palate similar to the nose, medium+ finish. Everything in balance. (1555 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 7/23/2023 & rated 91 points: Medium mature garnet. Classic mature Bordeaux. Dried cassis, prune, smoke, earth, cedar, tobacco, very slight hint of blackcurrant leaf. Medium acidity, medium tannins, well integrated, medium alcohol. Medium+ finish. This isn’t overdone and I find a lot of finesse. Very enjoyable and drinking very well now and over the next few years but I don’t see any point in holding it - it won’t get any better. (1552 views)
Tasted by Evanbdavis on 4/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Deliciously unctuous, yet retaining great balance and freshness, the 2006 Cantemerle is just a lovely bottle of left bank Bordeaux. From a vintage with no shortage of sun, but blessed by a few refreshing rains, albeit not at optimal times. Black currant, hedge blackberries, and sun-kissed plums are hoisted up beautifully by dried florals and potpourri, culminating in a finish of freshly sawn cedar, campfire coals and garden soil. The tannins are integrated and tender. Though the texture is slightly coarse, it comes off as charming rather than rustic, given the rich chewiness of the fruit supporting it. Lovely wine, plenty of life left. But at its peak and mature right now. (1867 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 4/2/2023: Forsmak med mor og storesøster. Flott lukt, fast mørk smak, trenger luft. Krftig smak med rødbet. (1927 views)
Tasted by tomandlu on 1/30/2023 & rated 89 points: Similar note to my last bottle. Decanted about an hour drunk over the following 2-3. Deep, almost opaque color. Beautiful, complex and elegant nose that I associate with great Bordeaux with beautifully balanced notes of tobacco, clay, cassis, and some herbs. Slightly less complex on the palate but still elegant and impeccably balanced with the tannins and acid holding everything together nicely. All this needs is a touch more complexity to push it to a higher score but something tells me that's just not going to happen in this vintage. (2046 views)
Tasted by aerosol on 1/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Got a glass here now and it's singing after an hour decant. The color is dark, ruby red and light on the legs. The nose is lightly floral with wet earth. The palate is loaded with acerbic black cherry, a little cranberry, cocoa, black coffee, and a short but agreeable, chewy finish. This is in the perfect drinking window and in my humble opinion, drink it soon because I don't see how much better it will get with age. (1669 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 12/18/2022 & rated 92 points: From magnum and several hours' decant. Gorgeous challenging initial tannin but this became gorgeously mellow. Has opened up gorgeously since the last bottle drand in November 2019 (89pts) Years ahead of it. 92 easy. But didn’t survive overnight, which surprised me. (1168 views)
Tasted by Leto South on 12/2/2022 & rated 90 points: 2 hrs decant. Dense, blackish red, browning edges. Medium bq, classic Bx w prominent oak, blackcurrants, Merlot spices, tobacco. Medium body w still plenty of dark fruit (perhaps dried dark fruits), ample tannins turning sandy, good acidity. Good balance. Aftertaste a bit short, dominated by fruit. Will last another 5 yrs. Quite nice. (1436 views)
Tasted by the shrub on 8/29/2022 & rated 95 points: Drinking brilliantly just at the mo. Great secondary characteristics (1791 views)
Tasted by danibus on 6/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Classic old-school claret. Cherries, earth, tobacco. Nice acidity. Began quite austere but opened up in the glass. Plenty of people will find this too dry, but it is just my style. (1906 views)
Tasted by msauer on 6/6/2022 & rated 90 points: satte Frucht, noch Holz, leicht rauchig. warm.maskulin (1772 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 4/10/2022 & rated 89 points: 5th growth Bordeaux. Cab Sauv dominant with smaller amounts of Merlot, Cab Franc, and PV. Soft, elegant, lighter style of Bordeaux with focus on fruit. Cherry, blackberry blackcurrant, earthy notes, hints of floral notes. (1878 views)
Tasted by KriLis on 3/4/2022 & rated 88 points: It's good, although a little unremarkable. Don't think it'll improve much by cellaring (1973 views)
Tasted by chefdilletante on 2/25/2022: Pure profile with plum and cassis. Not overripe or overblown; elegant and correct. Beginning of drinking window; you can start now. Nicely done, old-school claret. (1637 views)
Tasted by Larre on 2/16/2022 & rated 87 points: Decent but not very pleasant claret. Nose, body and fruit is OK, but the wine is disjointed and disturbing green and woody features ruin the overall impression. I don't think this will improve over time. 87? (1637 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 1/22/2022 & rated 89 points: 40% CS, 44% Merlot, 7% PV, 9% CF; Mid to deep garnet to a mahogany edge.
The bouquet delivers sweet oak spices, cedar wood, underbrush, leather desk, marmite, malt barley, fresh sage, and bay leaf. As it opens, there is savoury, roasted meat quality.
Medium-bodied, the entry is initially direct and linear with lemon-fresh acidity and flavours of roasted meat, leather, blackcurrant, tobacco (or more a humidor) and dry autumnal leaves. However, the mid-palate is a little more savoury, with meat juices giving a meat stock almost soupy texture. It feels a loose-knit, more marinated black fruits (rumtoph) over fresh berries yet sustains a roasted herb note. The tannins are gritty and a little wider-grained, while the finish is medium-long - down the line, classic Haut Medoc. (774 views)
Tasted by PierreAma on 1/16/2022 & rated 87 points: little nose, not very long, still good but on decline (1767 views)
Tasted by tomandlu on 12/25/2021 & rated 89 points: Decanted for about 1 hour and consumed over the following 2 hours. Virtually opaque black-garnet color almost to the rim. Effusive, fruity nose with lots of tar and oak but still balanced and not sweet. Full and fruity on the palate too with nice, fine tannins but less balance than I prefer. I have no idea whether this has anywhere to go but it's delicious now, if not exceptional. (1554 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 10/30/2021 & rated 94 points: 1hr+ decant and needed every bit. Dark red color with purple rims. Dark cherries, stewed fruit, and graphite on the nose. Well balanced wine that is chewy with a lovely, gritty texture. Medium finish. Much better than my bottle in London. (1796 views)
Tasted by kronfeld on 8/31/2021: The wonder of Bordeaux. Lasted tasted three years ago. No apparent potential. Boring. Now filling out. Rewarding. Keep waiting. (2046 views)
Tasted by gbauer on 7/27/2021: Good fruit and tannin. Balanced. Still young. (2113 views)

(Chateau Cantemerle) #1; COLOR-dark; NOSE-the nose is spectacular; really impressive; the bouquet is explosive with a lot of red fruit; also some blackberry, tobacco and tar on the back-end; PALATE-this is quite Old World; there's a tea leaf component that I really enjoy and some black currant on the back-end; overall, this is quite earthy; tobacco leaf; definite black fruit (black cassis and black raspberry); this is very good and extremely well made; the $25 price makes this spectacular; there's a secondary cherry flavor (coming through the tannins) that will open up more with some cellaring; dollar for dollar one of the best Bordeaux values we've had in long time; RP-90; GV-91  91 points

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

Read more about Haut Medoc and its wines Long-standing fame The legally created division into Médoc and Haut-Médoc dates from 1935. But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
