Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ernestas on 5/11/2024 & rated 92 points: Bordeaux GCC 2019 horizontal tasting, wine #3. 2nd growth, made from a blend of 72% CS, 25% Merlot and 3% PV. Average age of vines 46 years, fermented in oak & concrete vats, aged for 18 months in oak, 80% new. Intense fragrant aroma of cassis, cherries, potpourri, leather, cedar, tobacco, violets. Medium+ body, approachable with velvety elegant texture, medium density, great concentration, medium+ fine tannins, long finish. (128 views)
Tasted by magnord on 4/19/2024 & rated 93 points: Mörkröd med blå ton.
(798 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 10/31/2023: 2019 Bordeaux Tasting, MW tasting (Vintner's Hall, London): 72% CS 25% Mer 3% CF, 13.50%
Big bold and beautiful, straightforward profile, blue fruit, nice oak frame, floral notes.
Palate showing juicy tannins, full body, blue and black fruit notes, some alcohol notes, med acidity, long finish. Youthful but promising (2034 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 9/29/2023: Oak less perceptible than a year ago (but not from same case) and definitely still open. Well put together, enjoyable now with a healthy decant. (2093 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 4/15/2023 & rated 91 points: S&E Wine Society - Blind Bordeaux Blend Tasting (at Home): Young. Cassis and vanilla on the nose (3196 views)
Tasted by RussK on 3/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Russk liked from the Union Des Grand Crues De Bordeaux tasting. (2936 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 2/2/2023 & rated 95 points: This is either an ace for the Gruaud lover of old school Bordeaux or a head scratch for why and what the rest of us keep sniffing our glass for....This is probably the best Gruaud since 2000. Really impressive. I need more, someone please help me....BUY_HOLD_

* I think this will hit 98+ with time for the funky Gruaud bunch. A Bordeaux drinker's masculine style Bordeaux. (3669 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 12/8/2022 & rated 90 points: Still opened up. Red berries and vanilla spice on the nose. The oak is perceptible but deftly handled. A tiny bit of heat that I only noticed after food. Quite masculine. I suspect this will go to bed for awhile but enjoyable in its youth for the time being. (2940 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 12/3/2022 & rated 94 points: UGC 2019 Singapore (Singapore): Richer with more depth to the fruit than the three St. Julien preceding. Almost Pauillac in style with pencil lead, very good length. Really good and one of the best wines at the UGC in my eyes. (2772 views)
Tasted by wineappellation on 12/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Smooth and velvet. Creamy with good fruits, prominent green bell pepper. Palate with good minerality. Medium body. (1770 views)
Tasted by remyworldpeace on 12/1/2022 & rated 94 points: Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2019 Vintage Tasting, Singapore: Tasted at UGC Bordeaux 2019 tasting in Singapore.

Classic style. Lovely, sweet raspberry with cedar and sweet tobacco. Showing an impressive structure and excellent balance.

Scored because it is already showing well. I suspect this will go through a more closed phase as it continues maturing then emerge the other side as an excellent, mature claret. Tremendous potential. Anticipated range 93-96. (2340 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 10/12/2022 & rated 89 points: I get intensely curious about every new vintage of Gruaud, hoping this will finally be the one where they turn the corner, but, unfortunately, like Mr. T or David Hasselhoff, they still haven't managed to recapture the glory they were capable of as recently as the 1980s. This year, it's red-fruited with snappy curranty flavors and a nice, vaguely stemmy backbone serving as the throwback to old-style Bordeaux (though not necessarily old-style Gruaud, which tended to be much deeper), but in texture it's streamlined and pretty slick, leaning more on acid than tannin for structure. I found William Kelley's comments on this interesting. His objective description of what's in the glass isn't far off from mine (sans the licorice, which thankfully escaped my notice), but his take on where it stands vis-a-vis the historical record struck me as nicely diplomatic: "doesn't mark a return to the muscular, rich, rustic style of the Cordier era's heyday but nor does contemporary Gruaud Larose have anything in common with the rather lean, malnourished wines frequently produced in the late 1990s and early 2000s. ... If this trajectory continues, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the château will be entering a new golden era." Well, maybe, but if there's a trajectory here we're still at the beginning of the curve and it would be nice to advance from "will be entering a new golden era" to actually entering one. Feels like we're still at the "is it much farther, Papa Smurf?" stage of this ride. (3999 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 7/4/2022 & rated 93 points: Union des Grands Crus: The nose on the 2019 Gruaud Larose is interesting and complex, with red berries, spice, rose, a savory soy sauce element. A little hot on the palate, unusually, but there's plenty of fruit, a slightly herbal note, and tannin. Very tannic by 2019 St Julien standards.

NB wax capsules since 2018. (4187 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 7/1/2022 & rated 96 points: Gruaud is definitely back in 2019. We are back to old school, masculine Bordeaux here. This outscores all Saint Julien wines for me and is going to be something really special with cellar time. I will grab a case and burry it...Lots of good funk and chocolate is buried in this Gruaud...Im so happy that his is back on tobacco road. HOLD (2192 views)
Tasted by Roger Patterson on 6/30/2022 & rated 87 points: Subdued fruit, floral pastiche. FUll bodied. At LA UGC. (1614 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/28/2022 & rated 92 points: UGC Bordeaux (Union Station - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting. Brooding and meaty with lots of powerful, backward fruit, begrudgingly giving some richness in the middle, then ending with a long, firm finish. Very good, 92-94 points, 2034 forward. (3016 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/29/2022 & rated 93 points: Earthy, smoky, fresh, and minty with notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, and currants with blackberries on the nose. The wine is fresh, bright and crunchy with a nice bite of cassis and cranberry in the dusty finish. Drink from 2026-2047. (2733 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
