Tasted by Nelsongwinn on 6/25/2022 & rated 89 points: Crisp and soft with nice fruit (597 views)
Tasted by ilcalmo on 4/18/2022 & rated 89 points: Very good. Nice acidity and minerality with slightly riper orchard fruit than that description would imply and a smooth, almost creamy texture. (613 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 3/27/2022 & rated 89 points: Pale & light golden yellow in color. Fresh, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of grapefruit, lemons/limes & stone fruits with floral overtones of honeysuckle, minerals, stony, chalky & a hint of salinity in the background. Light bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, zesty, ripe fruit flavors of grapefruit, lemons/limes & peaches with minerals, stony & some honey notes. Lingering crisp finish. Drinks quite well at present and offers an excellent QPR. (633 views)
Tasted by Mwc33 on 3/21/2022 & rated 91 points: Wonderful grassy and herbaceous notes; lovely acidity and a hint of salinity. Excellent match for shrimp paella. (609 views)
Tasted by Hi.its.Don.4.Wine on 12/21/2021 & rated 93 points: The Pendulum Swings - Just a Little Less

Earlier this year I did a review on the previous vintage of the wine I’m reviewing today. The post “The Pendulum Swings” was a reference to the fact that the wine had a wide array of reviews; 85 to 93 if memory serves. For this newest vintage, the range is slightly less; 90 to 92.

Just as in physics where a simple gravity pendulum is an idealized mathematical model of a pendulum, the weight (or bob) on the end of a massless cord is suspended from a pivot, without friction. When given an initial push, it will swing back and forth at a constant amplitude. Real pendulums are subject to friction and air drag, so the amplitude of their swings declines, and can be written in the formula as:

(I couldn't paste the formula, but it's on my blog)

Got all that? Me neither. Let’s talk about the wine:

Avancia Cuvée de O Godello 2019

From the Valdeorras region of Northwestern Spain, and whose name means “Valley of Gold,” comes this wine that could be described in much the same way. These organic and traditionally dry-farmed grapes sit in soils that are primarily slate intermixed with small quantities of quartz; adding to the minerality of the wines.

After hand-harvesting, 20% of the wine is fermented in used French oak barrels while the rest of the wine is fermented in stainless steel. Aging occurs for eight months along that same regimen.

I love Godello, it’s a take on the Sauv Blanc style but with a bit more pizazz. Bright and crisp, with subtle honey notes and stone fruit and citrus and wonderful minerality brought about by the oak influence, which I love in SB as well.

Just as the last vintage, my rating would bring the range up one notch to 93, but that still brings the swing of the reviews into a lesser range, so gravity and physics once again triumph.

Tasted by Oenecnist on 10/9/2021: Further to my Note of Aug. 17, '21: Continues to please but a different experience this time with holding for a day. Held some for 24h with vacuvin, and this time the fruit faded some. Best drunk at one sitting (within the next year or so) but solid quality for that. (402 views)
Tasted by ocassiuso on 9/27/2021: Brilliant green-tinted lemon color. Aromas of elevated intensity include citrus and peach with a whiff of the sea. Dry, with elevated, crunchy acidity, full-bodied, 14.2°. Peach and citrus flavors linger through a saline finish. (423 views)
Tasted by Oenecnist on 8/17/2021: Bought 4b for 8.5/b from a local independent shop this week; this is #1. Light gold-green; initial fruity nose of citrus, some white stone fruit; surprisingly subdued body, good mouthfeel. Kept with vacuvin over 3 days, and richer body emerged by day 3. The freshness is enjoyable now, but I think this will develop in bottle for at least 1-2 years based on my good experience with the '15 Amizade Godello which is still delicious. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation (see earlier posts for my 4-category, non-point rating system): For now, this is notable when considering quality, age, and price. (416 views)
Tasted by marcp on 7/15/2021 & rated 90 points: Medium bodied, medium-high acidity, dry. Citrus, green apple, white flowers, lemon pith, chalky finish. Great complexity for this price point. (343 views)

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.

Galicia

Galicia is an autonomous region in the northwestern corner of Spain, north of Portugal. It is marked by an atlantic climate with frequent rain and moderate temperatures, especially along the coastal regions. There are five Denominación de Origen (DO) areas: Monterrei, Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, Ribeiro and Valdeorras. Probably the best known wines are the Albariño wines from Rias Baixas, but all regions have seen increased interest in recent years. There has been also a notable resurgence of local grapes, like Godello, Treixadura or Loureiro.

Valdeorras

Valdeorras (Valley of Gold) is the easternmost wine region of Galicia, with wineyards on the banks of the river Sil in the southern part of the Ourense province. The climate is a mix of atlantic and continental with high rainfall, but warm summers. Godello, an indigenous grape, is becoming important again. Other white grapes are Palomino, Valenciana and Lado. Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, Gran Negro and Merenzao are in use as red grapes.
