Community Tasting Notes (average 94.2 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 67 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mtnmd1 on 4/21/2024 & rated 94 points: Dark Chocolate notes, medium long finish. Has a hint of herbaceous undertone which elevates this to keep this from being a fruit bomb. Came up to its sweet spot after an hour of air and warmth out of the cellar. Delicious! (429 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 4/5/2024 & rated 93 points: Old world wine afficianados need not apply for this wine. It is a massive juicy fruit bomb with loads of highly extracted black and red fruit, some coffee and espresso notes and some Ludens black cherry cough drop on the finish. Some lingering spice on the 45 second finish. While not my style of wine, one should respect it for what it is and what they are able to get out of their grapes. (549 views)
Tasted by jimyeni on 3/28/2024 & rated 94 points: Great as always (497 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 3/22/2024 & rated 95 points: Perfect mix of structured black fruits, suede leather, grilled herbs, crushed pebbles, tobacco, dark chocolate and graphite. Juicy acidity, ripe mountain tannins on a long finish. Kamen never lets me down! (536 views)
Tasted by JustOneMoreGlass on 3/17/2024 & rated 92 points: My style but lacked beautiful fruit I wanted. Deep dark inky magenta. Full bodied. Structured. Smooth throughout the palate. Yet fruit element was slightly bitter and it detracted majorly.

3hr decant in amadeo. Riedel performance cab glasses. (605 views)
Tasted by Franken Berry on 3/2/2024 & rated 95 points: Agree with AGelvis- terrific cab for the money. I have my bottle a one hour decant. Dark plum color, blackberry, blueberry, raspberries, with notes of chocolate, wet stones and bramble. Terrific structure and mouthfeel. Satisfying finish. Continues to drink well (837 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 3/1/2024 & rated 95 points: Two and a half hour decant. Deep dark magenta color. Blackberry, blueberry, strawberry jam, German chocolate cake, thyme, and subtle damp stone. Dry, velvety, full bodied palate. Nice, gritty acidity. Firm, voluptuous tannins on the longish finish.

This is such a good, reliable CS for the money. Very easy drinker. Nice, engaging structure. Probably doesn’t need even a two hour decant at this point, but some air is recommended. (812 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 2/19/2024 & rated 95 points: Excellent as always! (882 views)
Tasted by jimyeni on 11/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Delicious as always (1207 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 11/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Pulled this one by mistake to take to my brother's (I meant to pull a '14 or '16) and enjoyed over two nights, the 2nd night after having put a Repour stopper into it from the night before.

Dark purple in the glass, standard nose notes of dark fruit, graphite, and quite bit of oak. The 2nd night the oak receded a good bit and the wine softened a bit. The fruit turned decidedly blacker the 2nd night as well. Black plum, it seemed. Enjoyed by Matt more the 2nd night than the first, maybe 92-93 first night and 94 the 2nd? Long, long time ahead for this one. It has a slight 'muddied' feel to it and needs more years to clarify itself. (2187 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 10/29/2023 & rated 95 points: Wine + Pizza Night
Wine # 5

Intensity of aromas and palate of this Moon Mountain beauty is amazing. Well structured, graphite, leather, chocolate covered berries, vanilla, dust and liqueur. Bright acids and softened tannins on nice Long finish. (1199 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 9/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Glass decant, darkest red to purple, ripe plums, blackberries, toasted cherries, white pepper, spicy oak, little chocolate and vanilla, leather and crushed pebbles. Still young and I’m running out. Always impresses. (1430 views)
 Tasted by ras2006 on 9/15/2023 & rated 95 points: just opened the bottle garnet color, rich dark cherry, soft tannins, smooth - very very nice;

update: tasting this over several days -Day 2: even better than Day 1 (1313 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 8/24/2023: Napa 2023 - The Sequel; 8/23/2023-8/28/2023: PnP and revisited several times over 90 min, but this was locked down by a wall of tannins and oak that let only a bit of blackberry and blueberry through. Deep and dark colored, reminded me of the ‘13 at the same stage, so it has that going for it. Lots of potential but no score today. Give this 5 more years sideways. (1730 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 8/20/2023 & rated 94 points: One hour slow ox was enough this time. Big wine, but right in the zone now. (1146 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 7/28/2023 & rated 95 points: Glass decant, expressive on the nose and palate. Spicy oak to vanilla laced oak, white pepper, mountain soil, rich black plums and berries, licorice, mint, chocolate and graphite. Bright acids, plushy tannins on long finish. (1356 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 5/11/2023 & rated 96 points: This purple MM beauty is on fire. Bold, bright and exuberant today. Sensational notes of ripe plums, mountain berries, vanilla bean, milk chocolate, sweet tobacco, cigar wrapped, licorice and crushed rocks.
Fine acidity, powdery tannins on long delicious finish. So glad we got a another case! (1495 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 3/19/2023 & rated 95 points: My 10th bottle from this vintage and feel like they are getting better and better. I can't keep my hands off of them. (2119 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 3/8/2023 & rated 95 points: 2 hour decant, could use more. Gained weight as it decanted, hints of grapefruit peel, plums, toasted berries, vanilla bean, freshly roasted coffee, tobacco and bakers chocolate. Zesty acidity, smoothing tannins on a long finish. (1962 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 1/28/2023 & rated 96 points: This is tasting so fine. 1.5 hr Glass decant. Getting better with time. Explosive nose of peppery plums, mountain berries, cinnamon, spearmint, chocolate and fresh orange peel. Fresh and structured palate adds some mocha, vanilla topped pastry, pine and fruit compote. Nice acidity, ripe tannins with long finish. (1995 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 1/26/2023 & rated 96 points: Three hour decant. Very deep dark vibrant purple magenta color. Funnel cake, black cherry, graphite, boysenberry, cream soda, and subtle cinnamon and dark chocolate. Dry, satiny palate. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

This is the rare ‘18 Napa CS (technically Sonoma) that is drinking quite well with a good decant. Looking forward to its evolution in the coming few years. (2533 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 12/9/2022 & rated 94 points: One hour decant, was still pretty burly at that point. A couple more hours put it in a happier place. Excellent cab with tons of life. (1646 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 12/7/2022 & rated 95 points: Three hour decant. Nearly opaque ruby magenta color. Blackberry, dark raspberry, sugar plum, nougat, French toast, honeyed tea, and tangerine rind on the nose. Smooth, dry, full bodied palate, with zesty, persistent acidity. Firm tannins on the long finish.

This is very fruit forward, but also surprisingly complex for its youth. Such a good drinker for the price. Could certainly improve another point or two in the coming year or two. (2240 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 10/21/2022 & rated 96 points: Head to head battle with MH Coombsville ‘18. Coravined glasses.
3 hr decant. Black-purple. Expressive and rich dark fruits on the nose, peppery oak, plums, great structure, bright acids, vanilla wafers, slate, leather, chalk and crushed stones. Bold palate, tongue coating, focused with mint, dark chocolate, grainy tannins on long finish. (1937 views)
Tasted by jimyeni on 10/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Great qpr. This bottle a little darker than most but such a beautiful wine. (1722 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
