Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 84 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/1/2024 & rated 87 points: Ripe black plum aromas and flavors with liqueur notes and a clearly sweet finish. Not very powerful, but reasonably well balanced. A fun enough modern-styled wine if served with the right food (burger, BBQ). Side note... what a ridiculously heavy bottle. (585 views)
Tasted by paris_pub on 4/27/2024 & rated 91 points: Solid, bold, yummy, classic Primitivo (238 views)
Tasted by harrygonzo on 2/2/2024 & rated 91 points: If you don't have a heart attack lifting this wine up your going to love it (780 views)
Tasted by ThijsPiet on 12/25/2023 & rated 91 points: Full and quite some sweetness. Not too jammy. (937 views)
Tasted by RyanY on 12/24/2023 & rated 85 points: Im on the same boat with the previous commenter. Just had it last night but didnt like it at all - found it unbalanced and one dimensional with way too much (new toasted?) oak. All reviews talk positively about it tho so idk if it’s just my style preference but going to try out some other primitivos i have to get a better objective feel. (857 views)
Tasted by gordoyflaca on 12/13/2023 & rated 83 points: Really not feeling this right now; am I missing something? (950 views)
Tasted by RBurgundy99 on 12/6/2023 & rated 89 points: Liked this but sort of the opposite experience of the prior reviewer - got lots of jammy raisiny goodness and felt it was perhaps slightly past its peak. Won't wait too long to consume my other bottles.

Agreed on the bottle though - would make a good murder weapon lol. (1038 views)
Tasted by Portland Seth on 12/3/2023 & rated 89 points: First of all the bottle is ridiculously heavy with a very deep punt. Upon initial pour blackberry, tobacco, black pepper, vanilla and some green steminess. Body, acidity and tannins all seem in balance. My only complaint is that it tastes young (acrid and grapey). If this matures gracefully it could be a QPR bonanza at 92 pts. but I have very little experience with Zins. (749 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 11/25/2023 & rated 90 points: I was originally skeptical, given this was included in the prestigious 2021 Italy GR3 TRE BICCHIERI AWARD listing; Primitivo, like it’s US counterpart, Zinfandel can be unbalanced and jammy in hot vintages, and 2017 in Southern Italy was a very hot and dry year. Much to my surprise this shows ripe, slightly jammy red fruits along with enough underlying tannin and acidity to provide balance. This was decanted and enjoyed with smoked brisket, pork ribs and jalapeño sausage. The wine definitely complemented the spice in the food and the sweetness of the BBQ sauce. Medium finish. Needs food to show itself. Wonderful QPR at <$15 USD. (581 views)
Tasted by Tintin on 10/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Great improvement from Night 1 to Night 3. It needed that time to open up fully, but when it did, it was incredibly rich and almost sweet. (1143 views)
Tasted by BARRY WAX on 9/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Rich with many layers and a dizzying array of aromas and flavors, including, black cherries, other dark fruit, vanilla and a touch of cinnamon. (1034 views)
Tasted by Not647f on 9/12/2023: Consumed over a couple days. Importer Oliver McCrum has said he has not imported primitivo from Puglia because too many examples are "stewed." (He does have one on his radar, and if it shows up near you, buy it. I've tasted it ahead of his importation.) This wine, bought from Garagiste, is a good example of that. Too hot, out of balance, all fruit, no structure. To be fair, Zin/Primitivo isn't usually built for the long haul, but 6 years is not a long time for a red wine, and I've had 100% Zins that lasted twice that. Great presentation--hefty and distinctive bottle, tasteful but distinctive label, but this is, even at $16, a pretty disappointing wine from Rimmerman. (1054 views)
Tasted by BARRY WAX on 8/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Excellent; in full flower; rich nose with cream de cassis; cinnamon;. red fruit with a very long finish. highly recommended. (1143 views)
Tasted by SteamboatMate on 8/4/2023 & rated 89 points: Rather deep in color. With a nose of dark fruit / plums and hints of citrus. Lighter than expected
on the the tongue with blackberry forward. Moderate to light tannins. Alcohol level makes the wine feel unbalanced. (1298 views)
Tasted by IvanLi on 7/8/2023 & rated 94 points: I believe the guys are totally spot on with their notes as the wine is ultra ripe, jammy with notes of various smoked black berries, plums and prunes as well as cocoa and chocolate. These hedonistic flavors are further accentuated by tiny quantities of residual sugar. The wine is complex but dominated by smoked black jammy aromas, however there is enough lift and structure from the acids and tannins to keep it all in balance.
An interesting example of southern winemaking. (1171 views)
Tasted by gavail on 7/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Rich, intense, jammy. Powerful and complex Primitivo. Notes of prunes, plum, cherry, chocolate. A bit earthy, scents of tobacco, cocoa. Full body, soft tannins, medium acidity, long finish. Wine for special occasions. (915 views)
Tasted by stbraunt on 6/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Very rich, very deep flavor, and a great value. Solid pizza wine. (972 views)
Tasted by jayw on 6/4/2023: Candy-sweet red fruit with a bit of a green streak that helps but ultimately fails to redeem this overripe Primitivo. OK as a pop-and-pour pizza wine and the price is right at $14, but nothing special about this wine. (1151 views)
Tasted by FoodAndDINK on 5/29/2023 & rated 93 points: Went amazingly well with a slow braised lamb ragu. Decanting for an hour mellowed the tannins and brought out some super fun secondary herbal notes. Good strong acidity, medium body. Overall, a delight to drink. (1013 views)
Tasted by kcsteve on 5/12/2023 & rated 89 points: Delicioius. Extracted and bold but not heavy on the palate. A steal from Garagiste at less than $14 (1050 views)
Tasted by matiasox@gmail.com on 4/15/2023 & rated 89 points: I was prepared this time for the sweetness. Nose: plum, blackberries cassis, oak. Palate: sweet plum, blackberry, candied Cherry, finishes with tomato leaf bitterness, which helps balance the sweetness. (1273 views)
Tasted by silton on 4/12/2023 & rated 89 points: Big bold delicious Zin, just a touch ripe. Drink now/soon because when this falls apart it will be a hot mess. Also a ridiculously heavy bottle, the glass so thick you can't tell how much wine is left after each pour. Solid QPR at $14. (1352 views)
Tasted by jhanne8 on 4/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Everything I want in an Italian wine. (1208 views)
Tasted by webreg on 4/2/2023 & rated 89 points: Deep ruby red. Blackberry and plum forward. Hints of earthiness. A bit on the sweet side. (1135 views)
Tasted by CalimerosDad on 3/25/2023 & rated 90 points: Sehr dicht, sehr fruchtbetont mit tiefdunkler Farbe. Klasse Wein! (1144 views)

Cantine San Marzano

Producer website

San Marzano is a small village in the centre of the Primitivo di Manduria DOC region, a strip of land kissed by the two seas of the Salento: the Ionian and the Adriatic. In 1962 the DOC appellation did not yet exist. Even so, 19 winemakers came together to follow a dream and founded Cantine San Marzano. However, it wasn't until 1996 and the introduction of a new bottling plant that San Marzano wines could move from commodity to brand. With the growth of the brand and company, San Marzano set themselves a goal: 'To make a wine just like the one our fathers did and make it original and contemporary.' This was to be the Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP, one of the iconic labels of the company, and one which embodies the essence of the San Marzano philosophy. Today the collective continues to flourish with the aquisition of new vineyards and opportunities to explore.
