Community Tasting Notes (average 94.2 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AGELVIS on 5/1/2024 & rated 95 points: Two hour decant. Deep dark intense magenta color. Blackberry, stewed plum, semi-sweet chocolate, black cherry cobbler, cumin, and orange rind. Smooth, dry, medium+ bodied palate, with good, lingering acidity. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

This is improved from 18 months ago, when I tasted this at the winery in Calistoga (same property as Rivers-Marie, but different building). This kept improving over an hour of drinking. I hope to wait two years for the next bottle. (492 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 3/10/2024 & rated 95 points: Rich, delicious, black cherry fruit, cassis and earthy flavors, excellent structure, long finnish, great, great wine (972 views)
Tasted by atilathehun on 12/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Still a bit thin; fills out a bit with time in the glass. Pro reviews 91-93 right on (1397 views)
Tasted by CoryDean44 on 12/2/2023 & rated 97 points: Extremely perfumed nose with leather, campfire, fresh cut oak, and tobacco. Dense concentrated blueberries, blackberry, tobacco, with long earthy finish. 97 points (1447 views)
Tasted by atilathehun on 6/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Too fruit forward and a little thin backend (2690 views)
Tasted by gharter on 3/23/2023 & rated 94 points: A beautiful wine. A little over the top and benefitted from a short decant. Black fruit, cassis, cherry, anise and slight herbal aromas. Loaded with flavor showing black fruits, cherry, anise, plum, spice, herbal and a hint of cedar. Good acidity with a long, smooth finish. Showing really well now, but should improve over the next few years. (2471 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 2/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Smoother and a bit more restrained, especially on day two. A step up from the blend. (2394 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 12/25/2022 & rated 96 points: Pop and pour and tasted over an hour.
Dark purple color.
Wonderful nose of dark fruits.
Delicious dark fruited wine, with cassis, cherry and plum notes. Hint of spice on the finish. Sufficient acidity to lift the fruit.
Shows depth and elegance in a nicely balanced package. (2276 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 10/17/2022 & rated 94 points: One hour slow ox. Very deep dark electric magenta color. Cinnamon stick, blackberry, charred nutmeg, and subtle orange rind on the nose. Smooth , dry, modestly tart palate, with mouth watering acidity. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

Tasted at the Matthew Wallace / Post Parade tasting room next to Rivers Marie. This is young, but has good potential. (3051 views)
Tasted by blarmston on 9/8/2022 & rated 92 points: This is not ready for primetime.

Decanted for two hours before sip. Immediately regretted opening this versus a 206 Brion Caldwell that was also in contention.

VERY fruit forward with not much else going on. Quality of fruit is there for sure, but this lacked any tension, balance, and tannins. Just not what I was expecting from a 2019.

As the evening wore on, it did improve a bit and begin to "fill out", but imo this needs several years to integrate and shed some baby fat.

91-92 now, and I can see potential improvement with some slumber in the cellar... (2949 views)
Tasted by jsa44406 on 8/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Wonderful CA cab-I enjoyed drinking it now. Opened up. Deep red; purple hue. Big and complex yet smooth. Dark cherry. Bold body; medium+ tannins; medium+ acid. Long finish. Dry. Delicious. Excellent value. (2174 views)
Tasted by jonboy74 on 7/7/2022: Accidentally drank this one instead of the normal Napa Cab. So mad as this was my last one. Kicks a$$ just like the prior bottle, which I also was not intending to drink so early. Entirely approachable at PnP, with fantastic nose of currant and dark fruit. Tons of sediment. Don't touch these for another several years, but if you mistakenly open one (or two) early, like I did, you will really enjoy it. (2189 views)
Tasted by jonboy74 on 1/1/2022 & rated 96 points: Near-tragic end to one of my two bottles - storage box collapsed, managed a "controlled fall' and all my 2019 caterwauls crashed onto the concrete floor. The impact somehow made one of the corks on a Cemetery to depress, and wine escaped, so I brought it home. Super young, of course, but wow is this some seriously good stuff. At PnP it was like an amazing perfume, so impressive. Dark fruit galore, not jammy or thick. Great acidity. Very smooth. I wouldn't recommend drinking these now, but you certainly can! 6 hour decant, continues to soften and open up in the glass. Wish I had bought more! (4053 views)
Tasted by gymnastpro on 12/9/2021 & rated 95 points: Ah day one the wine was pretty closed. But day 2 it’s exactly where I tasted it when I saw Will. Great black cherry and raspberry armoas with a lengthy mineral/graphite streak that goes right to the mid palette. Very long and smooth. Great wine for a great price! (3784 views)
Tasted by Badmonkey on 12/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Thinking about buying more to lay down in light of the 97 to 100 rating from Dunnuck but wanted to see where it’s at first. Dark ruby fruit - currants, blackberry, and dark cherry. Fairly smooth mid-palate with decent depth/concentration - medium/medium plus body. Nice rich flavors of dark berries, some spice, cassis, and a little graphite/mineral component. Decent finish but a little closed/tart - some bing cherry. Decanted for two hours and drank over a couple more. Improved with time. Enjoyable but as expected this vintage needs time to develop further. 100% cab.

Set some aside to see how it would progress over the next couple days. Some improvement mid-palate (it did open-up some more) but the finish was still somewhat closed/tart. It’s probably not fair to rate/evaluate this wine at such a youthful stage but I expected more especially on day two and three. Hopefully in a couple years it approaches the 97 to 100 rating from Dunnuck. (4994 views)
Tasted by gymnastpro on 10/20/2021 & rated 95 points: A fantastic wine. Very much like Dr Crane but a bit more subtle and smooth compared to Dr Crane. This wine is superb. The tannins are there but so smooth and elegant. The fruit is definitely there, but not bombastic. Great mineral steak that smooths out on the finish. Truly a great wine. (4050 views)

2019 Caterwaul Cabernet Sauvignon Cemetery Vineyard

From the winery at release:

As much as we loved the 2018, this is a big step up from that first bottling. Vine maturity and vintage conditions get most of the credit for this improvement. This is a challenging site so every year should see better and better root development as the plants work their way down through mostly old creek bed cobble. The vineyard site can also see extreme heat being in the heart of St Helena but the cool-ish 2019 vintage saw very little dehydration anywhere in the valley. The high temperatures around Labor Day in 2017 forced us to declassify everything from Cemetery that year due to abbreviated hang time and lack of true development. In 2019, we were able to hang the fruit out as long as we wanted easily getting through the one heat event in September and making picking decisions based on flavor and tannin maturity. The resulting lots gave us plenty to choose from when we sat to finalize this blend. The 2019 is saturated black/purple all the way to the rim. Even the bubbles in the wine when you pour it are purple. The entire expression of the wine is very dark: chocolate, blackberries, black currants, cassis, black olive, cocoa and scorched earth run from the front of the wine to the back. Like a lot of wines on this soil type, there’s a nice balancing minerality, almost as if you can taste the rock in the vineyard. The tannins are abundant but perfectly ripe and help to buffer the dense, thick fruit profile. With all the best wines we make, there is a lot of everything present here but all in equal, balancing proportion.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
