Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by acyso on 1/24/2018 & rated 95 points: Dinner at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): An outstanding bottle of champagne. The nose is nutty and a bit apple cidery, and definitely shows its age. But I'm not saying that this tastes old; in fact, it's still incredibly vibrant with a serious amount of effervescence. The palate is concentrated, with a lot of the same browned apple and nutty tones, but the acidity is not that of old wine. There's a vibrancy and aliveness here that belies the developed secondary flavours. (4208 views)
Tasted by psmith on 1/24/2018 & rated 96 points: I thought this was spectacular and in a great place. It's earthy and rich, with flavors that certainly tend much more towards mature, but there's a phenomenal citricity that keeps it very energetic and lifted. This, and sufficient fine mousse, keeps it from tipping over into 'old' territory, and with time it further integrates and gains in depth. I wish I had more of this, and if I did I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to get through them. (3240 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 1/24/2018 & rated 94 points: One Bottle Dinner at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): Golden rose color. Powerful and voluminous nose of toffee and mature white fruit. The palate has cider, caramel and mineral. Impressive freshness and liveliness in the body. I prefer my Champagne on the younger side, but no doubt this is excellent and interesting. (3630 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 8/30/2017: Wines of Good Hope: Summer 2017; 7/29/2017-9/14/2017 (River's Inlet, British Columbia): Orange zest, dried fig, somewhat oxidative but still lively, fresh, and deep aromas and flavours. Savoury palate with caramel and trace smoke. Salinity, like salted caramel. Great acidity too. Consistent with the last bottle. Decidedly more developed than the '90 alongside which is always terrific. (4199 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 3/24/2017 & rated 92 points: Big nose of salted caramel, savory, tertiary but very delicious. Think dulce de lece or salted caramel ice cream. Very vibrant on the palate with strong yellow apple. Like a sugary granola batch, toasted grains with a lot of frosting. Dying effervescence though. A very proper and mature champagne. (4250 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 3/10/2017 & rated 92 points: Old but rich. Light oxidation but maintains its depth. After an hour of air time the edges begin to tatter but maintains sweetness and depth on the finish (1671 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 10/11/2016: Just a bit of bubbles left, judge this more as a still wine. Deep flavors of brioche, orange zest, and apple. Despite scarcity of bubbles pretty lively on palate. Holding on. B/B+ (2227 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 4/22/2016: Comtes de Champagne-middag med Jan Netterberg (Ett hem): Golden yellow colour showing a bit too much darkness and almost no bubbles. Probably been stored a bit warmer than it should. Still drinkable, but showing lots of maturity on the nose with rum raisins and plum. Palate is a bit flat but with a nice freshness on the finish. This bottle was too late. Not rated. (3394 views)
Tasted by Leto South on 1/1/2015 & rated 90 points: Deep amber colour. Mousse rather short-lived. Nose w brioche, apples, strawberries, orange rind, but also clear aging notes. Full-bodied taste w creamy fruit, citrus acidity and a long, complex aftertaste. Past its peak now. (3634 views)
Tasted by winequant on 12/30/2014 & rated 88 points: This bottle really did affirm the saying, "There are no great wines, just great bottles of wine." While it is clear this wine, in a perfect bottle, would be have been a thrilling razor's edge interplay between citrus pith, vanilla ice cream, lemon curd, and roasted nuts, it was instead marred by a note of sherry. Still enjoyable and lovely to get all of those flavors in the glass, it was clearly on the wrong side of its peak. A shame. (3181 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 6/22/2013 & rated 93 points: Dinner at Tetsuya's: Deep gold in colour. The nose is very much in that heavily aged champagne style and personally I loved it - lots of apple cider, orange rind and chestnuts.. The palate is so much brighter, with acidity and real drive to it - it's really surprising after the nose but its a great contrast and works well. Consistent with another bottle 4 years ago. (5758 views)
Tasted by BradE on 6/8/2013: More advanced than it should be, but still a good drink. (4686 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 12/8/2011 & rated 90 points: Showed excess age on both the nose and the palate, which freshes up as it opens but never to the point of being what it might have been. (5473 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 1/31/2011 & rated 94 points: Happy Birthday Wines! (Bern's Steakhouse, Tampa, FL): WIML94-95?

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about three hours.

Yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout with very light beading. Nose of toast, honey and roasted almonds. Later showed some lovely caramel aromas. Flavors of pears, tangy apples and a hint of lemon. Later showed some lovely caramel flavors. Medium to bright acidity, full bodied. Drink or hold. (5902 views)
Tasted by sdr on 3/20/2010 & rated 95 points: Tasted along side the '82 Billecart-Salmon BdB, the Comtes showed its superior breed, being fuller, fresher and more lively on the palate. Well-preserved champagne of this age is quite different than a new release since the acids become much better integrated and the wine becomes more lush. The flavors of nuts, honey and apricot are in the forefront. Very, very easy to drink (5773 views)
Tasted by BECKMANN on 2/26/2010 & rated 80 points: This one has topped. Very little mousse left in the glass too quickly after serving. VERY oxided - Nose was close to bad, at least not good - taste however fairly okay and long aftertaste - but i found no romance, no sweetness or juicy taste.
Interesting to taste due to the many years it had in it. This one was bourght in "commision" from a shop, together with "Comtes de Champagne 1981" (and that one was way over!) they originally came from same cellar - so i might try this vintage again some other time, but only if i am more certain on the storage/cellars its coming from then.
Rating is purelly/mostly on the back of the age was interesting - tastewize i have had better for cheaper money! (4096 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 8/1/2009 & rated 93 points: Dark golden colour. Fine bead, quite lively. The nose got better with time in the glass, developing citrus rind, honey and roast chestnut aromas. The acidity on the palate is fresh and lends a crispness to the aged flavours. Around its peak as long as you like the aged style of Champagne. Drink over the next couple of years. (4351 views)
Tasted by Greg Pierce on 12/25/2006: From magnum.

In a word -- magnificent. This wine had a deep golden color with effusive, very tiny bubbles. The nose was initially reticient, but opened up with bready citrus aromas -- Nice. On the palate, the wine had a big golden fruited, round, slightly carmely flavor -- Nice. (4586 views)
Tasted by dk_lulu on 10/30/2004: Very delicate, fine bubbles, strong notes of toasted almonds and walnuts, then pear and lemon. Texture very silky yet mouthcoating. Exquisite balance, with complexity and layering in the midpalate. Moderate finish. As the wine warmed up and sat in th flute, the mid-palate complexity increased and stony mineral elements were more pronounced, especially in the mid-palate and the finish became extended. Overall a lovely vintage champagne. Fine (5095 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
