Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 41 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jlm on 2/29/2024: Drinking really well. The palate has fleshed out and shows delightful fruit character along with its grippy freshness. A fullbodied rose with mouthfilling texture that works great with food. (196 views)
Tasted by Ppavlicek on 1/21/2024 & rated 89 points: Missing a bit of the fruit and freshness i fell for when this was younger. (355 views)
Tasted by Elycohn on 7/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Firecracker strawberry with a slippery slide: quiet to bold.

Humming strawberries, white pepper, and thyme, then something spicier, deeper, candied, rich & savory. (709 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 7/17/2023: This might be my last bottle from this vintage - for me, Pibarnon is always a rose’ where I hang on to a bottle or three to see how they age. And I guess it’s an individual decision as to whether or not it makes sense to do so, because the wine does lose it’s just released vibrancy, so if that is what you treasure in a rose’, drink them on release.

This is full-bodied for a rose’, dry and structured. A serious rose’, if you will. I’m grilling up a tuna steak tonight and this should work fine with that. (713 views)
Tasted by tadams66 on 6/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Wonderful rose. Excellent fruit and finish (775 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 5/28/2023: Opened as an aperitif on a hot, late spring day, this showed surprising richness, and needed to be kept reasonably cool. Plenty of ripe red fruit flavors, and just a touch of orange rind. Certainly has the depth to hang on for a few more years, though I would probably drink up relatively soon. (817 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 5/22/2023 & rated 86 points: Tasting tired and lacking acidity in the first place.
Not lively; almost clumsy. (524 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 10/24/2022 & rated 86 points: Quite disappointing from this normally outstanding producer of Rose wine.
The 2022 is simply too flabby and lacks any kind of freshness and tension.
Could work in absence of food but that's not what I purchase Pibarnon rose for... (1051 views)
Tasted by dlduchon on 8/8/2022 & rated 92 points: Vibrant and refreshing. Delicious with summer, spicy food. Beautiful equilibrium. (1259 views)
Tasted by Elycohn on 8/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Flexing ABVs (14.5%) with a cool waxy restraint. Where it could be gregarious and ripe fruit candy, it's waxy pale strawberries and cool whipped cream Dried orange peels and tamed herbal undergrowth - rosemary and thyme. (1196 views)
Tasted by boston617 on 8/3/2022 & rated 95 points: Richer than most rosés in mouthfeel; almost buttery (1162 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 7/26/2022: This came across a little richer and fuller than I remember, with almost a hint of tannin. Moderate acidity. Ann loved it and I liked it, too. (1207 views)
Tasted by ZaphodB on 7/14/2022 & rated 91 points: Orange-pink colour. Pleasant fresh and fruity nose with notes of raspberries, strawberries, blood orange, apricots and herbs. Mouthfeel is fresh and fruity, medium bodied, with good acidity and notes of raspberries, strawberries, apricots and herbs.

As always, this is a very serious style of rosé wine, rich and with some complexity, and will probably get even better with some more time in bottle. (944 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 7/10/2022 & rated 91 points: Summer Wines (Craig & Nita's Place): Medium salmon color. Small glass. Bold and refreshing, lots of spice and stony character, mineral driven, tart red fruit, cranberry and tart strawberry. (1023 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 7/2/2022 & rated 88 points: From magnum.
Slightly disappointing.
The aromas are great; rich both in intensity and complexity.
However, there's no way around it, this wine simply lacks acidity to keep it focused and refreshing. without it, it's slightly flabby and doesn't work as well at the table.
This is still my preferred Rose producer worldwide but the shift in growing conditions in Provence is alarming... (743 views)
Tasted by Schiffy on 6/20/2022 & rated 92 points: Excellent rose with expressive strawberry fruit, perfectly balanced and great acidity on the finish. Super smooth and refreshing with a surprisingly long floral finish. (888 views)
Tasted by PVJC on 6/17/2022 & rated 91 points: Good as always. Hard to stop drinking it and none left at the end of the night. (777 views)
Tasted by Twowinechicks on 6/5/2022 & rated 91 points: Orange-y copper color, medium-bodied, fresh and mouth-filling yet smooth on the palate, with notes of white stone fruit. The balance is impeccable, an energetic combination of integrated fruit, acidity, and harmony. It’s a bit mellower now (than it was last fall) and somehow just as lively. (850 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 5/22/2022: Delicious rose. Fairly substantial, but refreshing and light at the same time. This was popular around the table and the bottle was emptied quickly. (888 views)
Tasted by jonboy74 on 5/9/2022 & rated 91 points: Great Rose, excellent medium body, lifting acidity and fruit. Hit the spot, and wife liked it too! (1059 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 4/29/2022 & rated 91 points: slightly tart cherry and strawberry, some grapefruit and zest on the finish; plenty of structure for a rose; very nice. (932 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 4/17/2022 & rated 91 points: still drinking well in half bottle format.
Nice rich texture, orange blossom aromas, no bitterness. (996 views)
Tasted by jlm on 4/14/2022 flawed bottle: Mildly but definitely corked. (797 views)
Tasted by BadOyster on 4/6/2022 & rated 90 points: Short, pithy, salty, grapefruit/blood
orange bitterness. Wish the bitterness was turned down so you could appreciate the length a bit more. (934 views)
Tasted by BadOyster on 2/13/2022 & rated 90 points: Watermelon, strawberry-kiwi in entry transitions quickly to a bitter blood orange and salty minerality with that chalky, pithy finish that impressed me with its length. Could have had a bit more fruit to balance the pith. Happy I had it, but not yet my rose pick for Summer 2022 (it’s more like a food-friendly white than summer sipper). (966 views)

Château de Pibarnon

Producer website
From Michael Skurnik: Chateau de Pibarnon is arguably the finest Bandol produced, a Mourvèdre that ages effortlessly, steadily gaining nobility and stature, for 10-15+ years. This now famous Bandol property was purchased by Henri de St. Victor and his family in 1975. Planted on steep terraced slopes on the northern edge of the appellation, the estate is known for its wines that have both concentration and elegance. Both Henri de Saint Victor and his son are passionate wine makers. Pibarnon frequently comes out on top in comparative tastings of Bandol. The buildings, which now boast a special function room for tastings and dinners, overlook an amphitheatre of vines and has a spectacular panorama of the sea.

Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé

Farming: Practicing organic
Blend: Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Percentages of each vary with the vintage.
Vineyard: The terraced vineyard faces the sea on the top of a hill that reaches 300m, forming a great natural south-east-facing bowl. The soil is made of clay, limestone and white chalk.
Pressing: Cinsault is free run juice – Mourvèdre is “saigné” (hour of skin contact). The blend of both juices is fermented at low temperatures (22 °C) slowly for 20 days.
Cooperage: No wood, aged in tank for 6 months.
