Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jyensan on 4/29/2024 & rated 88 points: Too much oak for me. So overpowering there is little fruit to enjoy. Certainly not my style. (216 views)
Tasted by kabert on 3/29/2024 flawed bottle: Musty smell and taste - not drinkable. Day two was no better. (281 views)
Tasted by mikdal on 2/10/2024 & rated 90 points: Too much oak, unbalanced at this point. Hopefully gets better in a few years (335 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 9/9/2023 & rated 93 points: Light gold color. Lemon, vanilla, and a whiff of smoke in its complex bouquet. Delicious now, with excellent balancing acidly and fruit. Very refreshing medium long aftertaste.
Will evolve for at least another 2 more years. (653 views)
Tasted by libero on 8/27/2023 & rated 93 points: Delicious, buttery and no oakling taste. (613 views)
Tasted by PSanDiego on 1/29/2023 & rated 94 points: This is not a weak-kneed chardonnay. I would love to taste it when it is fully matured. No luck on that. I buy it by the case. Today I am having my next to last bottle after two cases. I usually get many cases of his chardonnay each year. Most friends and wife find it too strong, so Italian pinot grigio for them, Hansel for me. (1173 views)
Tasted by libero on 10/22/2022 & rated 93 points: The best Chardonay among others from Walter Hansel vintage 2019 (1224 views)
Tasted by Deegie on 5/13/2022 & rated 93 points: This Chardonnay packs a punch. Plenty of vanilla and lemon with some floral notes (chamomile?) and then woody ligneous spice on the long finish. I disagree that it lacks acidity. I found the balance just right. It was a bit hazy but that wasn’t a problem. (1960 views)
Tasted by ewasowicz on 5/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Nose: lemon and grass
Taste: stone, minerals, light lemon. A refreshing Chardonnay (1701 views)
Tasted by Twowinechicks on 4/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Light gold, hints of hazelnut and some spice I can’t place, definitely New world, balanced notes of citrus and lychee, a finish that transports you from Sonoma to who knows where—wow. We’ve tried a couple of bottles from a case purchase and have been similarly impressed both times. (1602 views)
Tasted by Twowinechicks on 4/11/2022 & rated 92 points: light yellow-gold color, medium-bodied, hints of vanilla, almonds, and white stone fruit. Luscious and long finish-defintiely New World, and beautifully balanced. And yes, fabulous with oysters. (1342 views)
Tasted by SMZ on 3/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Very nice (1204 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 3/12/2022 & rated 95 points: Aromas of papaya, mango, roasted nut, baked Brie and banana. Flavors of papaya, mango, lemon meringue, pineapple and butterscotch. Ends with a long finish of 40+ seconds with tropical fruit notes. Consistently one of the best Chardonnay’s for the money. (844 views)
Tasted by stokeme on 2/11/2022: Day 1 Beautiful vanillin perfume, nose & pallet. Needs more acidity. There is rich subliminal fruit here but barely enough structure. Hints of both lemon meringue & apple pie. It approaches the cloying boundary. 90+
Day 2 It’s softened even more now, the fruit is buried, subliminal. There is more vanillin & some wood on the finish. It’s slipped a bit past my threshold. Initially this has a very high end feel but ultimately it does not develop beyond the vanillin perfume & lack of acidity. (88-89) 1 of 2 (838 views)
Tasted by buymoreredsdrinkmorewhites on 1/15/2022: Apple juice in color, bruised apple on the palate with a burnt oak finish. Second try with this producer and same results. Not a rebuy for us. Lacks acidity. (1017 views)
Tasted by ewasowicz on 12/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Taste: very smooth, limestone, notes of lemon, I like it. (1074 views)
Tasted by 559Cheers on 10/2/2021 & rated 92 points: Nice weight and viscosity. Not to cloying or oaky. Needs a little more acidity though. No annoying Chardonnay traits. Little autumnal spice notes and hints of vanilla on the palette. (1271 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
