Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 50 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by juffer on 4/22/2019 & rated 92 points: Smokey blackberry nose. Some tertiary complexity in the form of licorice, garique and cured black olives. Satisfying meaty mouth. Moderate acidity, but good chalky tannic grip on the finish. This wine has improved substantially from what I recall from when I tasted it in its youth. (1345 views)
Tasted by z_willus_d on 9/23/2015: My cork fell to pieces, but no matter. This wine blew my socks off. What a very pleasant surprise. I paired with lamb steaks. (3036 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 6/23/2015 & rated 90 points: Initially, plenty of spice and ash flavor. Nice complement to spicy food. After breathing, the spice aroma integrates with ripe blackberry brandy, cinnamon and clove. The rich, round palate is teaming with ripe dark fruit, tobacco and fig flavor. The flavor profile is sustained to the finish where it is married with ample grippy tannins. The original 89 rating ramped up to 90. (2654 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 12/2/2014 & rated 89 points: Chewy, zippy, cherry, spice, tobacco and tar flavor with plentiful grippy tannins. Still youthful and exuberant. Expect it to continue to improve with age. (2933 views)
Tasted by GSW on 7/20/2014 & rated 91 points: A lovely wine and, I agree, somewhat akin to a Bordeaux. Delightful. (3344 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 4/6/2014 & rated 91 points: Did not take notes but this has improved substantially over the last 3-4 years. Decanted for 1 hour and as the prior taster noted, this was still rocking 24 hours later. Blackberry, tobacco / dirt on nose & palate - would have guessed Right Bank Bordeaux from a warm year if tasted blind. Really nice. 91+ (2475 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 2/27/2014 & rated 91 points: It has concentrated, spice, ripe dark fruit, tobacco and mint flavor as well as a bit of heat. The medium length finish has ample fine tannins. Resist the temptation to cut corners - you will be rewarded by providing a lengthly period to breath. (1451 views)
Tasted by Kentw on 5/18/2013 & rated 90 points: Drinking very nice. Smooth and silky, very dark, licorice and dark fruits. Improved some from a year ago. (1834 views)
Tasted by Kentw on 8/29/2012 & rated 89 points: Dark fruit, licorice with a dry and slightly tart finish. Not as fruity as many tempranillos but more subdued, old world flavor profile. Well structured wine. Better on day two, seems to have a bit more balance and fruit. Goes well (better) with food.Overall fairly solid. Just decant for a couple of hours before drinking. (2018 views)
Tasted by jsapping on 4/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Outstanding black fruit with a touch of licorice. Dry tannins and a long smooth finish. Decanted for and hour, and could use more time. Will only get better with a few years in the cellar. (2189 views)
Tasted by juffer on 2/21/2012 & rated 89 points: Plenty of fruit balanced with frrench oak. Will probably benefit from a couple more years to let the fruit further absorb the oak. Medium to full density mouthfeel. Plenty of structure and acidity to age well. (2089 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 12/6/2011 & rated 90 points: Decanted 20 minutes before dinner. Had with spaghetti - odd pairing I know. with some air this is a nice wine. At peak (on palate) but no degredation in color. Tobacco / dried cherry / blackberry / earthy on nose. On palate, medium body, high acids (handle the fruit & this was better with food), tobacco / dried cherry / vegetal with integrated tannins on medium+ finish. Very nice & would have guessed Bordeaux (right bank) other than the color. 90-91 range. (2548 views)
Tasted by carolville on 11/11/2011 & rated 90 points: Lovely notes of smoke and texture, was nice and dense, but not overwhelming. Will try the next bottle with food, this was drunk by the fire. (2441 views)
Tasted by kas on 2/27/2011 & rated 92 points: love this wine... (2470 views)
Tasted by yankee22 on 2/19/2011 & rated 89 points: I thought very good and deep wine. (2502 views)
Tasted by DanH on 2/16/2011 & rated 86 points: Mouth puckering tannins take away from otherwise redeeming qualities. (2638 views)

color & appearance - max 5 pts: 5
aroma & bouquet - max 15 pts: 13
flavor and finish - max 20 pts: 15
overall quality & potential - max 10 pts: 5

Tasted by TashNYC on 8/26/2010 & rated 89 points: Some intersting flavors. Best with our meatballs (no sauce) (2963 views)
Tasted by z_willus_d on 8/9/2010 & rated 88 points: Over 1hr decant @70F. Questionable cork (saw some spray). COLOR- a Cabernet like darkness, staining the glass edges with a deep purple-red residue on each swirl. NOSE- violets, dark fruit (cherry, blackberry, blueberry), but it comes across very sweet; black liquorish, currant juice, and a little spicy oak, tar and summer pathway dust; quite nice with real depth, reminding me of a high end, well balanced Shiraz judging by nose alone. PALATE- ripe, dark fruit or mulling spiced apples, plums, and rotting cherries envelop the whole. Trailing a line through that medium are bitter tar and dusty well integrated tannins that help distinguish this from the pre-described Shiraz exemplar; lacing atop the murky din of the aforementioned are specs of brilliance that show as perfumed floral drifts as well as palate-pops of sweet blueberry and/or sweet/sour, red fruited loganberry. Mud and clay show up early in the medium-intensity finish that lingers with cedar-oak and the mulling spices of clove and cinnamon in anise and currant juice. Normally, a wine with a profile of such prevailing rotten, spiced, oxidized fruit wouldn't appeal to me, however there is a depth and secondary complexity showing in this wine that almost reminds me of Bordeaux or more so perhaps an SA facsimile of the same. I should mention, this is heavy bodied, though not thick, with decent acid and a latent structure to suggest this can last some time yet (though I think this is peaking now). While I score this lower than in the past, it's more a matter of shifting tastes than a 100% objective scoring; and I do believe this is a better wine than when previous tasted. (3336 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 8/3/2010 & rated 91 points: Deep, thick red color. Elegant, ripe blueberry, spice, mineral and mocha flavors with smooth tannins. (3062 views)
Tasted by wine&roses on 7/28/2010 & rated 86 points: The fruit is fading from the palate (though not the nose), and the wine now tastes hotly alcoholic, making it not very pleasant. (3567 views)
Tasted by cpsmith33 on 6/28/2010 & rated 88 points: agree with others, still way too tight right now (3554 views)
Tasted by TBlock on 5/25/2010 & rated 89 points: Very tight on the nose after popping, slight manure first sniff and very difficult to decipher any fruit. Decanted 2 hours, first taste still very tight and acidic, a burn on the back palate. In glass additional 45 minutes, starts to open to bitter chocolate and dark cherry/raspberry. Dry fruit comes forward after 3+ hours out of bottle with much smoother finish. There is substance to this wine and should probably hold for 1-3 years more. Great QPR for $18, look forward to trying again next year (3555 views)
Tasted by LEXKYWINE on 4/22/2010 & rated 88 points: Nose a bit tight but after the alcohol flashes away (2 hours) some limited sour red fruit. Fairly typical of Spanish wines and I like that but not much fruit. The structure is there but a bit too acidic on the finish. 2nd day there is much more nose and sour moves to tart and the finish is delightful 88-90 (3445 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 3/26/2010 & rated 87 points: way too tight. i hope it gets better with some age (3577 views)

Luna Beberide

Producer website

The name LUNA BEBERIDE comes from Alejandro and Merche´s surnames. More than thirty years ago Bernando the father added the talent and spirit, and Merche the mother the trust and sleepless nights. They also relied on Fernando, the brother-in-law who also gladly helped.

Nowadays LUNA BEBERIDE is a winery with more than 80 hectares of land. It has come a long way but they know that they can always develop, learn and watch closely every stage in the vineyard.

Alejandro always says that all he wants is the wine to be liked, he does not mind the reason, it could be because of its fruit or minerality…but the most import thing is it must be enjoyed.

LUNA BEBERIDE winery is based on the native varieties of grapes Godello and Mencía, planted in vineyards on southern slopes of the Bierzo valley. Their wine includes features provided from the earth; clay soil at a moderate altitude determines the fruitfulness of the Mencía grape, the lime in clay soil adds complexity and slaty soils situated at an altitude of 800m adds minerality and diversity, all this found in fresh and elegant wines. You can sense El Bierzo in them.

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
