Tasted by parkerizedwino on 4/26/2024 & rated 95 points: Absolutley beautiful Riesling. Incredible rich and thick mouthfeel. Notes of stone fruits, slate minerality, flowers. Finish is endless. Incredible balance and finesse. will age forever. (869 views)
Tasted by Peraix on 1/24/2024 & rated 96 points: Very nice this young!
Elegant and showing slightly developed petrolium tones.I like this more than the 2020 version.

To finally be able to taste a wine like this is the reward you get if you dont give up and keep on trying many wines.

I think many people will find it hard to not start emptying their cellars in a early development stage. But it is evident that this wine will only grow bigger with time. Make sure you have enough for the future when the next phase is coming.

Tasted by Rote Kappelle on 12/31/2023 & rated 94 points: With climate change there are some who feel that Nahe is now a better place to find more typical German Riesling than the more prominent Moselle and Rheingau, for example. I haven't really worked out where I stand on this or whether I will continue to accept splinters up my rotunda from fence sitting.

Stylistically, this vintage will be an easy entry point for Oz Riesling drinkers - it is dry enough for them, it is dominated by lemon and lime, which will be familiar and it has plenty of acid. What it has that I have not seen in any Oz Riesling is the type of acid - none of that harsh, searing acidity I see in our wines- and a depth and complexity that I also don't see locally. Once you get past the citrus, you find ripe Granny Smith apple, and deeper still a layer of restrained tropical fruits. The layers to this wine are impressive.

I get the most out of this wine on the third day opened. The apples took a day to show and the tropical fruit layer another day. On day 1, I found this a rather austere essay in lime and lemon and I really was not feeling the love. I think with a decade, if your cork doesn't sabotage you, this will become an extraordinary wine and will easily be in the 96-98 region. There is a Keller like purity and architecture in this wine. Townes van Zandt's 'A Song For' works with this wine and opening it at this time in its development. What a song to go out on. (2793 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 12/10/2023: From magnum, this came across as tight and monolithic, but then really shined with food. An oyster dish paired with this was brilliant. Give this some time, especially in this format. (2385 views)
Tasted by aof on 11/12/2023 & rated 95 points: Utter infanticide, but justifiably so. Double decanted. Intense and complex aromas and flavors. Piercing acidity frames ample fruit density and viscosity. Long finish. (2511 views)
Tasted by wino_tim on 8/19/2023 & rated 97 points: From magnum. Medium straw. Almost perfectly crystalline, this tastes like some beautiful maniac planted Riesling in Les Folatieres. On the nose this remains youthfully clenched but hints at aromas of just ripe apple and quince, green papaya, all manner of citrus, fresh flowers, clover, fromage blanc and a dumptruck's worth of crushed rock minerality. On the palate this is full bodied and dry with high but not shrill acidity and a palpable level of dry extract which gives this an exceptionally serene, invigorating feel akin to a sunrise swim in a cool mountain lake. I don't know, I don't swim in mountain lakes either, but this is a wine that belongs with the world's greats. (3356 views)
Tasted by JLCFan on 8/4/2023 & rated 96 points: Intense, creamy and very fruity. Prominent apricot with streak of slate minerality and ginger spice. Acidic and mouth-tingling, this is an intense wine. A touch of spritz. Long finish heavy on apricot and saline brine, lovely.

Even more electric on day 2, mouth puckering intensity and very pure fruit. Very very good. (2729 views)
Tasted by Joshvoulters on 4/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Howard Ripley German Portfolio Tasting (11 Cavendish Square): Clear, tropical and spicy. Mineral depth on the palate, super vertical and clean. As with most GGs this young, it's unyielding right now but it's characterful and will be fantastic one day. (3807 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 11/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Tasted at the winery, this was one of the stars of the tasting. Full bodied, excellent balance of green fruit and acidity, excellent lingering finish. Not as much power and intensity as in previous vintages. (3893 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 11/13/2022: Impressions from "Perspektive Wein" fair (Wagenhallen, Stuttgart): Glass: Universal
*** brief notes for my own memory from tasting sip. No rating ***
What can I say? This Riesling Gold Standard. Wonderful nose with lots of fruit. On the palate great grip and tension, high, ripe acidity. Fresh, very, very long. Candidate for the Top 10 for sure. 94++ (3407 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 11/1/2022 & rated 93 points: Beautiful nose with lots of fresh yellow and white flower and fruit notes. Lime, fresh pear, soft orange zest, precise mineral notes and some soft chalky notes. Medium bodied with a high acidity. Fresh and elegant structure. I love the precision of the acidity and the fruit. Great complexity and depth. Very good overall balance although it needs to soften out a bit more. Very long and lively finish.
This is a little too young in the moment, better wait a few more years. Drink from 2025 until 2036. It will be beautiful on 6-7 years. (IG) (2770 views)
Tasted by Invest on 9/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Tonight for dinner with friends. From memory without any notes taken.

This is all on the elegance track. Fine reduction, delicately fruity, fine acid, fine minerality, nice length and complexity. I'm missing a bit of the energy and excitement of earlier vintages. (2996 views)
Tasted by beatles on 8/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Rich with character, spice; very good length, precision. Needs time - but maybe not many years, has complexity init's youth.

Dönnhoff

Producer website

U.S. Importer (add'l info)

As a help to those who purchase and cellar these wines, let it be noted that the 'Goldkapsule' does not ofen designate a higher quality bottling from the producer Dönnhoff. Herr Dönnhoff uses gold capsules on about 99 percent of the l bottlings of certain richer wines from the vineyards Oberhauser Brücke and Niederhauser Hermannshöhle and perhaps some others. Therefore it is usually unneccessary and misleading to use the term 'Goldkapsule' with Dönnhoff wines, currently. Although, just to be confusing, David Bueker mentions that there may be one or two exceptions, especially in 2001 and 2003 vintages, where Donnhoff produced "white capsule" auslesen from the Leistenberg and Dellchen vineyards (later Dellchen auslesen have gone to the gold capsules - e.g. 2006). To have to list my notes on a Cellartracker page that has a non-necessary and meaningless 'gold capsule' designation is highly irritating for me, as I feel that if I list it correctly it won't even be picked up by a search.

Another example of the confusion above is with the frequent multiple bottlings of Eisweine from the Brücke vineyard. There were at least three bottlings in 1998 and three in 2002. They occur when prolonged cold snaps allow harvesting on successive days. Usually one of these is designated the 'regular' Eiswein and the best one is sent to the Auction. Each typically has a different style. They are informally referred to by the day of the week on which they were harvested. Thus in 1998 there was a 'Samstag' Eiswein, and one for 'Sonntag' and also 'Montag'. The last named is extremely powerful, and extremely expensive; it is the Auction lot.

It is STRONGLY URGED then that when referring to Dönnhoff wines one refers to the AP number If this terminology is not used, identity can be impossible to determine. JHT

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Nahe
