(296 views)
Tasted by Bolognese Diner on 3/26/2024 & rated 91 points: Absolutely outstanding wine, notes of dark fruit, black pepper, beautiful animalistic character, bacon, and tapenade. Wow

Grandissimo vino, note di frutto scuro, pepe nero, bella parte animale, bacon e tapenade. Wow (441 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 2/20/2024 & rated 92 points: Solid. Recommend a PnP as by the 4 hour mark, this was starting to fade a little. (789 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 1/1/2024 & rated 92 points: A private lunch: Rich and ripe in style, with fruit of red and black berries and plums, combined with spicier notes (pepper, clove, tobacco), has the freshness and balance to carry its huge alcoholic weight (16% ABV) with apparent ease, the tannins are velvety and there is a touch of liquorice on the savoury finish. Very attractive, for drinking in the first decade of its life. (1702 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 11/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep, dark reddish-purple color, almost opaque. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, raspberries & plums with overtones of garrigue & floral notes, Provençal herbs, anise, pepper notes, earth/dusty notes, leather, spices, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, jammy, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, mulberries & pomegranate with spices, herbs, pepper, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing although it will develop further with additional aging. The 16% alcohol listed is indicative of its ripeness. (1111 views)
Tasted by FransS on 9/24/2023: A very shy and vague bouquet, missing body, bitters in the finish; maybe this bottle is not representative. (1169 views)
Tasted by chatters on 9/20/2023: 2020 Rhone's (Bottega Coco): Slightly jammy and baked red berry fruit, alcohol prickles lends a touch of pepperiness, slight struck match/bacon fat, biscuit. Gets more jubey with air and time. Alcohol over acid makes the mouth water, baked red berries, cream, sweet spice, fairly blocky tannins but relatively silky textured with a little rasping quality. Hmm. (1122 views)
Tasted by dmanzoni on 9/12/2023 & rated 91 points: Notevole ma molto alcoolico e i 16 gradi si sentono , ma sin attenuano dopo una bella decantazione di 2h. Violetta, cacao e cardamomo. Lieve dolcezza e corpo leggero. (1026 views)
Tasted by RichD2 on 8/14/2023 & rated 93 points: Really enjoyable wine even this young. Red and black fruit savory. Structure relaxes substantially with air. (931 views)
Tasted by mvande21 on 5/11/2023 & rated 91 points: Fresh with floral nose. Raspberries, red cherries, black pepper. Medium to full body and balanced. Good tannic grip and a fairly long finish. Needed longer air time for smoother, rounder mouth feel. (913 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 2/21/2023: La Meat Maison Wine Fair (La Meat Maison, Kifisia): Elegant, bright red cherries, floral notes, a touch earthy, palate light and easy, juicy, elegant, plums, medium body, medium finish (1127 views)
Tasted by Guillmallette on 2/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Opened and tasted directly… Mehhh
Dropped in the carafe.
After 2 hours: ok, there’s something, but still a little grippy
3 hours: better taste
4 hours: aahh, that’s a good wine
6 hours: that’s an amazing wine. Soft, a little fruity, some wood, really easy to drink, amazing!! I don’t feel the alcool like other reviewers after 6 hours.
It’s sure that it’s still young, but the potential is there and I will store several bottle in cellar (929 views)
Tasted by Rote Kappelle on 2/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Sometimes you come to a fork in the road, one that takes you down a path well-trodden to a place you know you like and one that is less well known and where much of the journey and certainly the destination is either unknown, or one you are ambivalent about at best. That would sum up the situation for me with this wine.

The most recent review does a good job summing up the journey this wine takes as it is given time to breathe. I remain somewhat unconvinced personally, even though on day 2 it is showing more development.

From another forward, ripe year, this shows with a pretty deep ruby and garnet colour.

The promise of power is partially delivered on the nose. There is a lot of alcohol - 16% ABV. I find it quite prominent, but others might be less troubled. There is also some nice rich raspberry and strawberry that is pushing towards jamminess. I also get some violets and floral (lavender) aspects that are charming. I found them most noticeable at about 5-6 hours open, undecanted. There are also some notes of roast meat, blood and iron filings. I think different drinkers will find more of one thing than another compared to others - for some it will be too much alcohol and that will overshadow everything.

The palate is very much about the good and bad of Grenache. I think it is complex and there is very good length and intensity. There is even a sense of some pepper (or is that alcohol heat) and a touch of attractive greenery. The issue remains that when Grenache gets very ripe it tends to give very high alcohol but without the body and weight on the middle palate to carry it/balance. That is, for me the real problem with this wine.

The wine does develop more heft on day 2 but the issue of Grenache over-ripeness is still not resolved - if it is an issue (for you it may not be).

I found the tannins quite easy, supportive but only really present on the finish. Acid balance could be better but the wine is not flat, or baked or dead. A better palate who tasted with me yesterday did find the tannins a little more angular did I.

So, whether you love this, or like me quite enjoy it but feel no interest in more, I think comes down to how you feel about Grenache. This is a big, alcoholic monster. If you are fine with that and you love Grenache then you will find this is a big bang for your bucks and I think you will, quite rightly, love it. I would not buy for the cellar because that fork in the road is the path about which I am very ambivalent. But it is there, and you may end up very happy when you arrive at your destination. Or will it be perdition? (1598 views)
(917 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 10/17/2022 & rated 95 points: 16% alcohol so not for the faint hearted; nevertheless really good, liquid candy; purple red; ripe dark berries, deep; in the mouth, dense liquid chocolate mixed with dark cherries and a bit of sweetness, good acidity to not make it jammy; bravo to Vincent to make such an alcoholic wine a pleasure to drink (1158 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 2/5/2022 & rated 92 points: Nez de garrigue, cerise griotte salée, very nice, poivre noir, léger réglisse... Léger fruit rouge, salin, épices orientales, léger tannin. 100% éraflé, terroir argiles rouge. (1488 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

The Domaine was founded around 1900 by Edmond Tacussel. However, in 1910 "Clos Saint Jean" was actually created with the registering of the brand. The vineyard has expanded through the generations - in 1920 by Edmonds’ son, Leopold Tacussel, in 1930 by Edmond’s son-in-law Camille Maurel and in 1957 by his grandson Guy Maurel. When Guy passed away in 1982, his wife Jocelyne Maurel who gave up her teaching position, together with their two sons, Vincent and Pascal (great grandsons of Edmond), took over the management of the family domaine with some of the best situated vines in all of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, all in the area of La Crau. Jocelyne Maurel died in November 2003. In 2002, Philippe Cambie had been hired as consulting oenologist/viticulturist, and he is (as is well-known to readers of Robert Parker’s writings), one of the greatest oenologists of Chateauneuf. Up until early September, the year 2002 was one of the most promising vintages in recent times, but a disastrous flood ruined the vintage. The Maurels sold off the entire crop to negociants and made no wine. In 2003, the brothers and Mr. Cambie were ready and nailed down the 2003 vintage to perfection. What they did was a little counter-intuitive (following the calamity of 2002) and took enormous courage — they waited, and waited, to pick. Even though 2003 was a hot year, with high sugars early on, they did not succumb to the temptation to pick the crop before it might rain, and instead held off. They started picking in late September, when virtually everyone else had finished. The wines all display supreme physiological and phenolic ripeness, without notes of surmaturity or over-ripeness. They are all deeply colored, rich and profound, even at an early stage.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
