Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by CJM on 1/14/2016 & rated 85 points: Clear pale garnet. Strawberry, plastic, anise, cinnamon. Low acids, low tannins. Cherry. Short balanced finish. (1457 views)
Tasted by hadlieh2 on 3/8/2013 & rated 90 points: opened side by side with V. open for an hour before pour. initial hit was caramel- totally surprised by by how good it still was. had with pork loin which was a nice pairing. (2877 views)
Tasted by joe d on 7/13/2012 & rated 85 points: Nice wine. Mature but not over the hill at all. Nose and palate brings macerated fruits - cherries, plums - with balance. No really perceptible tannins or acidity, yet lively enough. Our last bottle, and it has aged well. My discrete CT scale: 95-extraordinary; 90-very good; 85-good; 80-fair; 75-poor (3008 views)
Tasted by KGotterup on 3/30/2012 & rated 60 points: Should not have saved this one for a special occasion unless it was in 2007. (2991 views)
Tasted by windypinot on 5/19/2010 & rated 85 points: Still too old, but there is enough there to recognize what this was at one point in time. Will drink these young if I can find some more in the future. Didn't join cellar tracker soon enough to catch this bottle in my cellar in time. (3623 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 12/25/2009 & rated 85 points: tired wine, but a very interesting blend. This was clearly past its prime -- it was very rustic, with tobacco, earth, and other notes showing the Italian varietals. A little watery on the short finish, with some sour notes (2916 views)
Tasted by sayward on 5/4/2009 & rated 89 points: We did a Pleiades vertical 12-16 and this one impressed me the most. A lot of raisin bran on the nose, fig and a hint of pencil lead (from pinot I suspect). Drinking very well at this point in time. (2090 views)
Tasted by GrandeSerataFuori on 11/13/2008 & rated 88 points: Very soft and sublime. Most like a pinot noir or a southern rhone blend. Still hanging tough. (1925 views)
Tasted by WhineAndDine on 11/4/2008 & rated 88 points: Highly recommended. Like all Pleiades wines, a hearty and full-bodied wine with lots of character. Recommeded for stronger foods like beef or lamb. No trace of oakiness. (2015 views)
Tasted by BillB656 on 4/2/2008: Bottled June 2004. All Band-Aid for the first hour, then it transforms into an array of berries, earth, provencal herbs and mocha. Fully integrated, tasty, and quite lovely. (2044 views)
Tasted by clwagner on 2/22/2008 & rated 80 points: May have been past it's prime (2011 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 2/6/2008 & rated 88 points: Pop and pour. Last bottle of the 6 pack, and still enjoyable. Thsi still probably has a few years ahead of it. (2245 views)
Tasted by stercomm on 2/3/2008 & rated 89 points: Sean Thackery is not your run of the mill winemaker. The following grapes make up this wine; Syrah, Barbera, Carignan, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Sangiovese & ViognierThis wine has a very intense nose with strong scents of clove and spice, hints of floral. A very silky mouth feel, on the palate cherries and raspberry liqueur, very fruity with oaky vanilla in the background. The long finish actually has a very slight hint of lemon of all things. This is a very interesting wine with a lot of different flavors swirling around on the palate (2107 views)
Tasted by Rangstrom on 1/1/2008 & rated 88 points: Bottled in 2004. Hour of air and a leisurely dinner. Softer than XII, but made up of most of the usual suspects. I followed a strawberry note that I often find with Grenache and a slightly musty/TCA note that reminds me of Mouverdre. Later, especially on the finish, a Barbera cherry tone rings out. Of course, that is the joy of these wines: tasting the ebb and flow of the varieties as the bottle develops through the night. And that is just what makes it difficult to judge these wines beyond a visceral "me likey" But I do like and I hope ST keeps rolling out these palate twisting concoctions.

I did, however, take off two points for lack of typicity (joking). (2193 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 11/7/2007 & rated 89 points: What a strange and interesting wine! It's a bit flat for my taste, but that aside, the nose is fine, the mouth is chock full of meat and earth and dark red and purple fruit, and the length is good, if again a bit fat. It's not a serious wine, and it doesn't make a statement, but it's a good, dinnertime drink. (2216 views)
Tasted by jrushin on 4/6/2007 & rated 89 points: Fantastic! And just got better as I drank it. When first opened, it was great. Very smooth on the front, with soft tannins, bing cherry, and earth. I drank half, corked it, and set it on the counter for two days. Now, the nose is muted and the flavors go by quickly, but it's still a great wine! (2340 views)
Tasted by imbibe on 1/25/2007: umami! (2843 views)
Tasted by keepitreal on 12/18/2006 & rated 91 points: Thackrey's got a knack for making wine that speaks to you on many levels. You'd swear that this was some type of Aussie grenache by the nose and color, but the eucalyptus ends up somehow so well integrated it seems as if it were aged in barrels made of the stuff. Sea saltiness on the nose leads to cherry notes that give way to a spicy finish laced with moist tobacco and black fruit with a slight undercurrent of vanilla....it just keeps giving more as it opens up. Damn shame it's my last bottle of the XIII. (2448 views)
Tasted by Haj on 11/15/2006: A strange and intriguing wine. Bacon fat, muted plum, eucalyptus, and some faded cinnamon. We’ve tried this at a tasting more than a year ago, so we think this is heading over the hill. Though the flavors echo the nose listed above, there is a delicate nature to this wine. Nothing tastes quite like it. (2558 views)
Tasted by BillB656 on 9/2/2006: Very southern Rhonish aromas of dried rosemary and lavender mixed with dark fruit. What's most surprising is the seamlessness and balance of this wine. For such a mish-mash of grapes, it's just wonderfully elegant (although some may find it leaning a bit towards 'international', but not in a detracting way). Rich sweet ripe (not at all jammy) flavor, medium body, and a very silky texture. Slight hints of mocha mix with the fruit on the finish. There is enough structure here that it should age well over the next handful of years (2568 views)
Tasted by GlenD on 4/8/2006 & rated 91 points: Very Rhone like. Kirsch, leather and balanced acidity. (2974 views)
Tasted by Mattswines on 3/27/2006 & rated 91 points: Coming along nicely in the bottle. Finally seems to be reaching maturity.... showing great notes of red fruits ... strawberry/raspberry... with a hint of smoke and cedar. Nice acidity and enough "dirtyness" to pair wonderfully with some shish-ka-bobs. Tremendous value! (2908 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 9/5/2005 & rated 92 points: Had a small glass of this about an hour after opening at a friends BBQ yesterday. Enjoyed this even more than last time. (3381 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 8/26/2005 & rated 92 points: This is billed as a blend of syrah, barbera, zin, carignane(?),pinot, mourvedre and grenache, among other unamed varietals. Consumed out of spiegelau pinot/burgundy stems. This is quite weak upon opening, and really starts to sing after 60-90mins. PInot-like coloring, strong cherry aroma, with pencil shavings, plum and cherry-raspberry flavors. A very pleasant and enjoyable wine. (3398 views)
Tasted by mls on 7/31/2005 & rated 90 points: Wonderful peppery spice, soft tannin. Opens up beautifully if allowed to breath for about an hour. I will order more. (3453 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
