Tasted by Ridgerunner on 4/7/2021 & rated 94 points: This is a wine we love from a very good vintage. (1651 views)
Tasted by Gr8penut on 5/20/2019 & rated 88 points: I was expecting more from this bottle. Weak on finish. On a PS jag lately... (2200 views)
Tasted by NoWineWiz on 10/19/2016 & rated 87 points: Big, inky wine with black fruit and berries, dried leather and fresh earth. Soft tannins and long finish (4190 views)
Tasted by pmckinney on 1/7/2016 & rated 87 points: Past its prime, at least as I have cellared it. (5025 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 12/6/2015: Gang of 5 Lady's Night: At 10 years old this is starting to age, in fact, I'd recommend drinking them now. This was only bottle. Color is fading a bit and doesn't have that typical petite Syrah saturation. Tannins are integrated much less aggressive. Rustic in nature. OK but not a standout. (5516 views)
(4850 views)
Tasted by Xfactor on 7/14/2014 & rated 88 points: Very soft tannins, well integrated alcohol, but pale nose and fruit came off as over-extracted. Acidity and finish non-existent. (5026 views)
Tasted by djdaqm on 3/18/2014 & rated 93 points: Wine was purchased upon release and aged in ideal conditions. It was showing incredibly well tonight. On the nose, it has a hint of the grapey smell of Petite Sirah and so much more. On the mouth a bit of acidity, high concentration, good complexity. At its peak now. While it is a big wine, the balance was quite good and the alcohol did not stand out at all. (3552 views)
Tasted by Dencal on 9/8/2013 & rated 91 points: The wine looks Garnet colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Blackberry, Prune, Plum, Clove, and Almond. It tastes like Mineral, Apricot, Peach, and Blackberry. The body is Full. The wine has Round texture. The wine finishes Medium. A great petite Syrah from stags leap ready to drink! (3958 views)
Tasted by LongViewCellars on 3/29/2013 & rated 91 points: Needed to decant for about an hour. Still opened slowly after....Dark Cherry and Plum notes. A little tannic and dry but nice finish. Might be a year away from the next level, but a decent Petite Syrah from Stag's. (4249 views)
Tasted by hankj on 2/28/2013 & rated 94 points: Drinking fabulously right now, shed weight but still fruity, tannins integrated, earthiness developed. Has thrown some sediment (see shed weight) so decant if you care. (4252 views)
Tasted by Tarrant on 12/2/2012 & rated 92 points: Much better than our last bottle of this over 3 years ago, showing this varietal can age and grow more complex, really, really tasty - Black, full bodied with a nose of extreme plum, blueberry, spice, graphite, tar and vanilla, very well structured and integration with many years ahead of it, complex, spicy, intense, off dry on the palate with amazing length, stunning (92 Points). (3752 views)
Tasted by S_Gillett on 10/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Very nice, great example of brambly petite sirah. Needed to be decanted for at least an hour. Could use another year of cellaring. (3426 views)
Tasted by Sniffy-Sniff on 3/12/2012 & rated 91 points: Decanted in glass for 30 minutes. First few sips had an herbal thing going on. This was really well made. Superb balance of dark cherry fruit, white pepper, smoke and supple tannins. Drink now or hold for 1-2 years. (3422 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 2/2/2012 & rated 90 points: Not a Petite Sirah expert. Somewhat one dimensional, but really enjoyed this. (3268 views)
Tasted by Ombibulous on 11/27/2011 & rated 89 points: One of the reds consumed with Thanksgiving dinner. A big hit! Rich taste but smooth finish was one of the comments from one wine lover. Very nicely aged, such that the tannins, though still present, are smoothed in the finish. I aged this wine for several years and it was well worth the wait. Petite Sirah ages well. Excellent (88.5). (3438 views)
Tasted by Taylor56 on 10/28/2011 & rated 88 points: Decanted 60 minutes. Medium purple color. Dark fruit aromatics. Blackberry and dark fruit in the mouth - medium weight. Slight cutoff on the finish. Needs time. Hold. (3368 views)
Tasted by RedLoverJim on 10/2/2011 & rated 86 points: Leather and spice with some faint dark berry flavors. Drink now, not later. (3292 views)
Tasted by burgundybrooks on 9/2/2011 & rated 88 points: opened with soft tannins, leather without any fruit balance, transition to dark dried fruit with the same tannins - plummy, after 2.5 hours more black raspberry, rustic, pepper, still soft leather. , (3306 views)
Tasted by Daniel Thunberg on 5/7/2011 & rated 90 points: Served a with medium rare tenderloin, this year not as good as other years I have had but still very nice. (3961 views)
Tasted by Happybob on 4/24/2011 & rated 89 points: Nice, but not as good as some of the other vintages of same... (3825 views)
Tasted by DanR on 2/19/2011 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 2 hr. Explosive aromaticity - framboise, red currant, and smoke jump out of the glass. Attacks the palate with a beam of red currant, plum, leather, and peppery spice. Great structure and surprisingly vibrant. Very impressed with this showing. Great character, breed, and sense of place. Just hitting its stride. Drink or hold. (4110 views)
Tasted by FPNova on 1/30/2011 & rated 91 points: At a very nice stage for drinking now - the tannins mellowed very nicely - smokey dark fruit on the nose and the same on the mouth with a hint of raspberry overlaying it. This surely has time to get even better in the cellar but it is quite nice right now as well. (4221 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 9/4/2010 & rated 90 points: Decanted 1hr, this has settled down since the last time I tasted, certainly rustic and extracted, with loads of dark fruit, oak and a nice touch of pepper. (4537 views)
Tasted by patrickt on 8/7/2010 & rated 92 points: Opaque, dense purple, black fruit aroma with long finish. (4711 views)

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
