Tasted by aultrawines on 2/23/2024 & rated 95 points: AW95. Deep, dark and brooding, magical burst on the nose on open then it settled down a little bit and thoroughly enjoyed over the course of the evening. My first Sloan second experience I think this is solid QPR, and a first glimpse of 2005 under the talent of winemaker Martha McClellan! (205 views)
Tasted by sayward on 12/9/2021 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 1 hour and it was ready to go. Despite the age it is showing nice fruit on the nose. In a pretty good place. I would guess that it has another 5 years ahead of it that would constitute a good drinking window. Now is as good a time as any in case you forget... (905 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 11/12/2018 & rated 93 points: A burly wine with a big finish. Lots of tanins and good structure. Hints of cab franc? (1771 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 9/22/2018 & rated 92 points: Decanted and served. Cherry, black pepper, and oak with chewy tannins. (1639 views)
Tasted by sayward on 9/21/2015 & rated 95 points: Aging well. Decanted for 2.5 hours. Took to restaurant and consumed with steak. Nose of dark fruit, chocolate and minerals. Finish was smooth. Seems to be integrating well. Still has a lot of life left in it. I will hold my last bottle for another 5-10 years. (3058 views)
Tasted by lucaslabelle on 6/23/2013 & rated 94 points: Had this alongside a 2004 Tignanello, SQN The Line, and a 2002 Lynch Bages. They were all opened and decanted prior to consumption. We finished with the Sloan Asterisk so I can't completely remember it, but from what I can recall, it was in a great spot. I remember a distinctive taste of Tahitian Vanilla, and some really lovely black (and blue) fruit. The wine was really smooth, and soft. Very nice tannin integrations as well. The SQN was wotn, with this cab coming in a solid 2nd. (4250 views)
Tasted by Brownvino on 3/31/2013 & rated 93 points: Decanted for three hours. Excellent nose. Dark color. smooth tannins. medium mouth feel. Excellent dark (black and blue) fruit. (3598 views)
Tasted by Eagleputt on 2/19/2012 & rated 95 points: Had side by side with a 2005 JP Insignia and it held its own beautifully. Much more tannic on the pop than the JP (which was spectacular), so decanted for over an hour prior to drinking at the back half of our dinner. Opened up very nicely but the best days of this wine are still to come. Inky dark almost black wine with punch you in the mouth dark red fruit. A California cab's California cab. (3993 views)
Tasted by phenricsson on 2/27/2011 & rated 93 points: Big, tannic but there is fruit there. Wait and try again in a few years. (4338 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 2/14/2011 & rated 93 points: Hard to believe this is a second label. Spice and licorice. Full mid palate Long finish. . (3175 views)
Tasted by sayward on 1/25/2011 & rated 95 points: this was an epic wine. decanted for 3 hours and nose was chomping at the bit. color was dark as night. tannins are well integrated and i can see how in a few years a slightly more mellow tannin structure would really do this wine some justice. i am really excited about trying this wine in the future. (2579 views)
Tasted by B-Love on 7/6/2010 & rated 94 points: Boy, how scary. Opened the bottle and it smelled of nasty prune juice. Decanted..and waited 90 minutes or so. Bang! That did it. Classic cabernet w/charcoal, lead pencil, slightly tannic. Really nice. Will get even better. (2755 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
