Community Tasting Notes (average 86.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by 41hijinx on 6/29/2019 & rated 89 points: 98% Zinfandel, 2% Petite Sirah, 16.0% alcohol. Lovely deep garnet color in glass with some browning. Very nice overripe Zin bouquet. Concentrated ripe fruit on palate with dusty tannins and faint oxidation. Very little sediment. Making old bones. Drink up! (771 views)
Tasted by Blake Brown on 5/2/2017 & rated 90 points: 1999 RIDGE YORK CREEK SONOMA VALLEY LATE PICKED ZINFANDEL [2 btls]- thick and chewy, molasses like sweet plum and prune flavors; intense; a drop on the end of the tongue was enough for me. (1126 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 12/17/2016 & rated 89 points: The inside of the cork disintegrated completely, while the edges were firmly stuck to the bottle's neck.
It drank alright for several hours exhibiting a lean profile with good tension. Didn't come through as "sweet" at all. 16% ABV. (1434 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 4/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Much denser and sweeter than the 1.2% residual sugar would suggest, with strong toasty oak lending mocha tones over a grapey, cola, blackberry juice character. Big, high alcohol, and very ripe but hardly a fat sloppy thing, drinks more like a lean Recioto or perhaps Banyuls, but paired to a smoky brisket, collards, and sweet corn bread this was a lively, capable pairing. Very enjoyable as we used it, mature, ready to drink but probably able to hold though I see no reason to. (2200 views)
Tasted by AlexHop on 10/16/2015 & rated 92 points: Beautiful. Nose is fruit forward and bright still which is impressive after 16 years. The bottle notes even suggested the fruit would only have 5 years longevity. Plum and raspberries. Pleasantly slightly sweet. Would pair well with spicy food. Long finish with a touch of aged tannins. Good acid to balance the sweetness. (1877 views)
Tasted by unionst on 3/31/2012: over the top late picked - a port (2937 views)
Tasted by richone on 2/18/2012 & rated 91 points: This wine was delicious even though it should have been past its prime. I only wish I had another bottle or two to enjoy! (2554 views)
Tasted by sawira on 8/30/2011 & rated 84 points: Mediocre, and not a style I enjoy. It can't decide if it's a dessert wine or not, and caught in the middle - capturing neither the best aspects of dry or sweet. And worse, kind of flacid, especially for a Ridge, and especially for a 99. Too much alcohol, not enough fruit. Sour, but not dry. Not much depth, breadth, length, or flavor I enjoy. Yet, given this, it will probably last for another decade - especially given Paul's track record, though this seems unworthy of the cellar space. Sorry, but this is just not in the wheelhouse, for all of my respect for Ridge wines. Not my cup of tea. (2383 views)
Tasted by Dan M on 12/31/2009: Interesting bottle. Funky raisiny late harvest character. Soft with no tannins left but Draper's back label note suggested drinking before early 2006. On its own, a bit too much. With spicy jambalaya it worked pretty well. (2722 views)
Tasted by callmeacab22 on 11/26/2009 & rated 82 points: Although somewhat odd on opening ... mellowed out nicely after letting sit for a day. So it wasn't probably what was intended, the wine is still drinkable. (2465 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 7/14/2009 & rated 65 points: Red rim, medium + depth of color. Initially quite closed on the nose, with time developed port-like aromas, raisins, and an odd jolly rancher kind of smell... on the palate very low acidity, a fleshy midpalate, very low if not absent tannin structure, and a pinch of heat. Sweet elements dominate the firm elements of the wine in a big way, short finish, low complexity, and moderate + intensity. A good example of why acids and tannins are important in red wines... especially when there is a lot of ripeness of fruit/high alcohol... don't suppose this wine was intended to be kept this long in its defense... (1553 views)
Tasted by getkrunk on 12/11/2008: Very port like. No tannins at all left. Soft supple very round in the mouth. A good bit of sweet fruit left but definitely over the hill. Drank it after dinner. (1545 views)
Tasted by AJG on 10/3/2008 flawed bottle: Corked. (1657 views)
Tasted by mellison on 10/29/2007 & rated 74 points: Thick, syrupy. Almost tastes like cough syrup. After a glass bottle relegated to cooking wine. (1800 views)
Tasted by mellison on 10/29/2007 & rated 75 points: Relegated to cooking wine (1813 views)
Tasted by AlexHop on 10/28/2007 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Started off a little stinky but then went away after about 30 minutes. Lots of fruit, a touch of sweetness still. 16% alcohol, but it doesn't taste like it. Smooth finish. Great drinking bottle of wine. (1943 views)
Tasted by Double D on 7/28/2007 & rated 94 points: Shared with Tilden's...better than Turley! (1910 views)
Tasted by mebydef on 10/8/2006 & rated 89 points: Jammy nose. Dark fruits. A bit sweet. It’s still got stuffing, but it lacked complexity. I went back for the sweetness, but it just wasn’t very compelling after that. It was good, fine, but nowhere near exceptional. (1584 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
