Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/5/2018 & rated 90 points: Chardonnay Shootout: Burgundy vs New World, Double Blind (Booth One - Chicago IL): Double blind in Chardonnay New World vs Old World shootout. Rich and nicely mature with ripe apple and some stone fruit, but a well structured core and a good minerally finish. Best when first poured, certainly more tired when revisited 2 hours later. I correctly identified this as Old World. (2158 views)
Tasted by dankrems on 10/12/2014 & rated 93 points: Wonderful nose of honeycomb, apricot and toasted nuts. A deep golden color. Crisp acidity and a bit of green apple on the finish. Really nice. Just slight oxidation, probably at late peak or just past. Drink up. (2617 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 11/22/2013 & rated 88 points: Where have all the flowers gone? Long time gone. Great producer, great vintage, nice 1ere cru and little to show now. The days of 20-year old Mersaults and Montrachets seem gone, alas. Two lessons emerge from this acid-only, hint of tropical flower in the nose(after 10 minutes), non premox white burgundy: (1) drink white burgundy young despite its aging potential, given premox and this now typical experience; (2) drink more German Mosel Riesling and Donnhoff rielsing-- they age magnificently, are as well made at 1/4 the price and are more versatile food matches. (2949 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 11/12/2012 & rated 92 points: Cork 1/3 soaked through (better than last time). Deep golden color with hints of orange; nose of apricot, caramel, brioche, oil; palate is full bodied, subtle white fruits, tart lime; clean crisp moderate-length finish. Nice overall, my last bottle (and ready to drink). Quite good. 91-92 (3349 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 2/27/2012 & rated 91 points: No evidence of premox. Nice balance..very enjoyable (3974 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 8/23/2011 & rated 89 points: Cork soaked 3/4 through. Color is light gold; nose of butter, peaches, butterscotch; palate is clean, crisp/sharp, great acid and balance, midpalate develops mature fruit; finish is a little oxidized and has some lovely slate and lime components. This is a very good white burg but doesn't necessarily stand out for me. One more bottle and I'll drink it by the end of next year (due to fears of premox). 89 (3419 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 7/12/2011 & rated 90 points: Perhaps on the edge of premox on the nose, although did not worsen over the course of the night. Definitely different than the last bottle a couple of years ago. Deep yellow-gold color. Some butterscotch and minerality on the nose. Rich, nice mid palate. Nice fruit and still acid on the finish. I'd certainly drink up if you have any. (2811 views)
Tasted by stubbie999 on 7/10/2011: Would normally note as flawed and move on, but thought I'd add to the list - horribly prematurely oxidized. Closure seemed sound, but dead, gone and sherried. Sigh. (2281 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 2/4/2011 & rated 88 points: The last of my stash of Girardin 2002 whites and this is probably as fine a specimen as one could expect. Not poxed, but a deep gold and all the freshness has gone, though it remains big and tangy (2061 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 6/6/2010 & rated 92 points: Impromptu Calera Night: Deep gold color. Clean and expressive nose of honeyed white fruit, butterscotch and mineral. Full-bodied on the palate, but with good balance and good flavor intensity. The oak seems to be integrating nicely which should bode well for future bottles. Acidity really comes on strong at mid-palate ensuring the overall experience culminates with a long, satisfying finish. Among the better Girardin wines I've had but not really a style I love. (2909 views)
Tasted by Kevin_C on 9/27/2009 & rated 92 points: A glint light gold color. Same dusty nose after opening. Melon fruit and citrus along with marshmallow and another wonderful scent I wasn’t able to identify. Palate is medium bodied with a nice balance between zippy fruit and creamy oak. The fruit is showing a little spice here too. This ends clean with lemon zest and not too much heat. 92+ (2404 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 9/20/2009 & rated 90 points: Nice spicy oak on the nose with some citrus/ Balanced. Long. Quite nice. (2824 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 8/7/2009 & rated 93 points: Cabernet themed "European Lunch" (Donato Enoteca, Redwood City, California): Medium golden yellow color; maturing, mineral and tart lemon nose; poised and elegant, rich, ripe lemon, clementine, tangy palate; long finish 93+ pts. (2162 views)
Tasted by Kevin_C on 8/2/2009 & rated 90 points: Dusty bouquet upon opening with subtle notes of honey and lemony citrus. Shows lovely sweetness on entry. Full with good length leading to a long, dryer finish. Alcohol heat on the finish gets in the way of this being truly balanced. Time to drink up. [90-91] (2488 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 4/4/2009 & rated 90 points: Nose: High amount of toasty oak on the nose with just a trace of fig and citrus underneath. Palate: Oak at the forefront, but not as much as the nose would indicate. Oak is balanced by good acidity with some fig showing on the finish. Decent wine. The only flaw is a little more oak than I would prefer. Drink now. (2596 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 2/1/2009 & rated 91 points: Nice, clean aromas . Not overly oaked. Full bodied, balanced , plenty of fruit with slightly sweet finish. (2873 views)
Tasted by ncmussell on 2/18/2008 & rated 91 points: Even at this stage you can the spicy oak influence that is pretty typical of Girardin. But the wine is not overly oaky. Good fruit but developing a little nuttiness that is integrated with the fruit. Overall, this is drinking nicely at this point and I dont really see it improving beyond where it is at right now. But this will likely stay in this drinking window for a while. (2777 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 12/25/2007 & rated 90 points: Very Girardin - sweet oak and ripe chardonnay fruit, nicely married, tangy and long (2833 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 12/16/2007 & rated 91 points: Pronounced sweet and spicy oak, but this wine is so delicious, I don't care that it might not be very Caillerets - deep fruit, perfect marriage with the oak. Loved it (2835 views)
Tasted by Melli on 7/19/2006 & rated 96 points: Outstanding wine...very well balanced, complex, with long finish (3595 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 5/27/2006 & rated 90 points: Bruce found the first bottle better than the second, but both seemed to me fine examples of the softer Girardin 2002s, with the oak further in the background. But lovely, as always (3300 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 2/2/2006 & rated 91 points: Am running out of ways to say how wonderful these Girardin 2002s are - this was limpid, poised, piney, beautifully balanced and pure, with the oak well in the background (3403 views)
Tasted by winefool on 10/6/2005 & rated 91 points: Wineflock - 3rd Annual Chardonnay Shootout 1996-2002 (My house): Blind. Group #9, My #2. Medium yellow. Medium aroma of mineral, white fruit, and hints of iodine? Rich mouthfeel. big zingy mouthfeel of yellow fruit and mineral with a nice long finish. (3692 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/6/2005 & rated 92 points: Blind Chardonnay Tasting (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Blind tasting. Fruit driven from the start. Lots of spice, but perhaps more from oak than fruit or terroir. Still this drinks very nicely today and has the minerality and acidity to go forward a few more years. When unveiled as Girardin, I was not surprised to see this as a top modern styled white Burgundy. My #2 wine if the evening, which the group liked as well. (2203 views)

The Girardin family has been making wine as far back as the 17th century, making Vincent Girardin an 11th generation winemaker. In 1982, Vincent incorporated his namesake négociant house with only 2 hectares of vines. Since then, Vincent has steadily grown his production, with both purchases of land and grapes. Today, the Girardin estate represents about 20 hectares of vines spread throughout 42 parcels in 8 different villages in the Cote de Beaune. Bought fruit completes the range.

Vincent adheres to the principles of integrated and reasoned viticulture, emphasizing the benefits of bio-dynamism in the vineyards (no herbicide or insecticides are used, the ground is deeply plowed, compost comes from a biodynamic farm in the district) while still allowing himself the flexibility to apply a soft treatment to the vineyards should bad meteorological conditions seriously threaten the sanitary condition of the grapes.

Vincent is committed to making wines that are a direct expression of the individual grapes and terroirs. Harvest is done by hand and grapes, both of the estate and bought, are sorted twice before entering the winery (once when picking and again on the sorting table). During fermentations, strict and daily monitorings are the norm. Each cuvée represents a different hillside and a different exposure; thus, the winemaker’s decisions are paramount. Vincent’s roots are deep in the most prestigious terroirs of Burgundy. He knows every vine, every parcel of land. He ensures that the highest quality is maintained by following each wine’s development every step of the way, along with his winemaker, Eric Germain, respecting, at all times, the most important element of Burgundy – the individuality of its terroirs.

The white wines of the estate are lightly pressed and after a gentle racking of the must, put in French oak casks (with 10 to 35% of new oak depending upon the appellation). Fermentations begin with only indigenous yeasts and ageing is long, the wine resting on fine lees for 14 to 20 months, depending on the cuvée. The lunar calendar is consulted to find an auspicious bottling date. These wines find their essence in their finesse, extreme aromatic purity, and fine balance between acidity and richness.

The red wines of the estate are produced from partially de-stemmed grapes that ferment in stainless steel thermo-regulated tanks with their natural yeasts. The must is very gently pumped over and crushed in order to avoid extracting harsh tannins, always keeping in mind the search for purity and terroir expression. The must is then gently pressed and clean juice is put into French oak casks (with 30 to 60% of new oak depending upon the appellation) to settle. The wines are aged for 16 to 18 months on fine lees and also bottled according to the lunar calendar without fining or filtering. The resulting wines are often fruit-forward and elegant, with supple tannins.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
