Tasted by fcxj on 1/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Decent showing, open. (1751 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 5/7/2022: What a privilege to revisit this wine. Wonderfully graceful with the precision and balance of an olympic gymnast. Beguiling spice. A superstar. (1971 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/23/2021 & rated 90 points: First vintage was the week after Jeremy's wedding, only did picking no farming. Very different from wines that follow, as wasn’t even organic with grass between rows. Very soft palate, but rustic aromatically. (2093 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 10/1/2021: Had this 7 odd years ago thanks to @kami5 when we did a wine dinner with @highlandparkbrewery - but haven't had a chance to try it again, it was rather subdued then but this 2005 has really opened up from tits shell. Really opulent and generous in its fruit, the texture is seamless with elegance that guides all the primary nature into a long finish. Boy does it have a lot going on in it as it feels like there's still plenty in the reserve. Also love the vosne spice that runs rampant in this wine (2695 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 5/30/2021: Silky texture is extraordinary, so enticing and refined. Palate is pitch perfect with primary fruit and the start of secondary nuance, so well balanced. One bottle of this could never be enough, this vanished in a flash. Thrilling, as it has been for many years, and probably will be for many years to come. (2396 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 3/19/2021: Aromatic fireworks, so expressive and enticing. This is a seamless and lovely Vosne Romanee. Silky and beautiful, more elegant than powerful. (2031 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 8/28/2020: Maintaining the elegant and opulent plateau it has been on the past few years. Considering the company it followed, it held up pretty well. This is a special wine, not just for the quality, but for the fact that it has never shut down over the many years I have tasted it. (2356 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 11/2/2019: Opulent with Grand Cru length and complexity, this would fit in a lineup of La Tache. Deep fruit and exotic spice, tannins are supple, it’s both pleasurable and profound. (2421 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 10/29/2019 & rated 95 points: Very primary and powerful, as I expected, it’s got great spiciness and depth of fruit, plus a long finish. Not much nuance as yet, but it is in a very pleasurable spot to drink unlike some other 05s, and I suspect the score can go higher over time

Note...had the second half of this 2 nights later and I’m bumping the score up a point to 95 (2283 views)
Tasted by dream on 9/27/2019 & rated 94 points: Great freshness here with lots of intense dark cherry and blue fruits. High-toned but also rich and concentrated and it was herd to put down. Clearly could use some more time but it's a charmer to drink today. (2146 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/28/2018 & rated 94 points: Game, spice, cherry, red fruit, florals, leather, licorice, bitter and herbal. Perhaps a bit too much weight/stem on the palate, but otherwise great. 94 (2756 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 11/23/2018: Friendsgiving Burgundy Dinner (Scottsdale, AZ): Served blind and I immediately had my best guess. I was wrong but damn close: I guessed 05 Montille Malconsorts Christianne. That wine has the same gingerbread spice leaping out, and at the reveal I realized how very different this bottle was showing than last time I’d had it — because it was very, very cold. None of the nuance showing at this super low temperature.

As it warmed up started to come around but I’m wondering if these have a glacial lifecycle and the days of open and gorgeous accessibility are past it?

Even coming around slowly, it’s awesome. If you’re opening a bottle be prepared for a wine that may be precocious or guarded. But either way it’s legit. (2716 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/31/2018 & rated 94 points: Coche-Dury Lunch with a La Tâche Kicker, Then More Après Lunch Wines (Elements Restaurant at the Sanctuary - Paradise Valley, AZ): Served double blind in what turned out to be a great Vosne 1er Cru flight. This was my favorite of the flight. Cross-section of black and red cherry aromas and flavors with background spice and very good concentration and length. Charming and accessible already, quite surprising for 2005, but consistent with prior bottles in recent years. (3141 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 5/5/2018: Extremely elegant, lovely spice on the nose, red and black fruit, precise and serious. I've been privileged to drink this wine many times over the years, and it never disappoints. This is so much better than the '15 tasted couple weeks ago, I wonder if '15 could ever evolve into something this wonderful. (2452 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 9/15/2017 & rated 95 points: Malconsorts dinner with Zachys crew - also 05 Truchot CC, 99 Selosse, 90 Jadot BM & etc. (Blue Duck Tavern - Washington D.C.): Consistent with the last bottle from two years ago. It has reached the first stage of the youthful peak. Beautiful nose displaying warm red fruit, strawberry, cherry, a hint of Asian spices, rose and earthy mineral. Beautifully balanced palate, soft, warm and round, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, a hint of fine tannins and a long soft red fruit and Asian spices driven finish. Certainly most ready and harmonious of the flight. Simply pleasurable but will gain more sous bois for another decade or two. (4202 views)
Tasted by FYC on 3/5/2017: Drank alongside the 2005 Dujac Gruenchers.

I love Dujac but they can be so stylized that sometimes you wonder if it is too much Dujac and not enough terroir.

Drinking these two side by side nicely highlighted the difference between the two vineyards. The Gruenchers was very pretty, floral, and elegant on the nose and a bit lighter on the palate. The Malconsorts was not giving as much on the nose but the palate was noticeably deeper and richer. Very impressive considering this was the first year that Dujac acquired the Malconsorts plot.

Both still primary and tannic but by no means closed and quite delicious right now.

These should be amazing with a decade or two or three. (3126 views)
Tasted by BradE on 12/15/2016: DP, some nice white burgs, DRC GE, and 05 Dujac reds.: I drank this a few times when it was younger, and found it staggeringly good. Like the other 05's tonight, this is back in it's shell, and is not showing particularly well right now. (3877 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 5/1/2016 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind, this wine had a red/purple center w/ oranging rims. The medium+ intensity nose showed medicinal cherries, baking spices, soy, and blueberries.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with great richness. It also showed light, rounded tannin and good acidity.

Clearly, this wine is on the young side and was still somewhat monolithic. However, it developed well in the glass. My guess is that it will improve by a couple points in 10 years or so. (3907 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/4/2016: The Verticals Tasting at La Paulée 2016 (The Fairmont, San Francisco): Pale center, light rim. Some stems and sweet fruit scents. Light but amazing intensity for its weight. Spice, baked red fruit, char, and a hint of green things. Bigger, dry tannins. Extremely elegant, fantastic drive, wonderful potential once the tannins (hopefully) recede a bit. Will it ultimately be better than the more seductive '09?? (3727 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/4/2016 & rated 94 points: La Paulée de San Francisco - The Verticals (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Tasting, brief note. Lots of cherry and spice. classically Vosne. Very charming, and drinking beautifully already, so quite early for a 2005 and a Malconsorts. (4678 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 11/7/2015 & rated 95 points: 2015 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2015-11/9/2015 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Reaching the first stage of drinking peak. Beautiful nose of bright red fruits, strawberry and raspberry, a hint of vosne spices, red flowers and mineral. Very fresh and precise palate, fresh pure red fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and strong presence of mineral, sweet tannins and seamless clean finish with candied red fruit as the end note. Quite youthful but starting to be really enjoyable. (4682 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 8/8/2015 & rated 95 points: A baby. Typical herbal , stem notes on nose. Very approachable now, but should be great for the long haul. Great fruit. Needs time. Delicious. (2872 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 4/18/2014: Exceptionally elegant aroma, seductive and exotic, didn't know this was '05 thought it was a more mature wine. I've been privileged to drink this wine numerous times over the years, and it's always a stunner. It has never shut down, and it's always glorious. I regret not having more patience with this wine, but it's really simply too wonderful to resist. This wine represents everything that is great about the '05 vintage, and is an absolutely classic benchmark wine. (3273 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/13/2012: Slow-O 2 hours, aerated to decanter 30 minutes. Cork in new condition. A seriously endowed wine that plumbs the depths of your palate within seconds. The nose is stunning from the very first moment, and, with airtime, gains even more complexity, allure. Serious stuff now, but unmistakably built for the long-run, too. I should be so lucky to have a taste of this in a decade or two. highly recommended (4588 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 11/6/2011: This is a phenomenal Burgundy that remains a crowd pleaser. Lush, rich fruit with excellent delineation and a lengthy finish. Serious juice better than most Grand Crus -- and frankly better than many Dujac Grand Crus. While I would not be hesitant to open this wine now, I suspect it will go from great to otherworldly in the years to come. (4837 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Vosne Romanée is one of the smallest wine villages in Burgundy The wines possess diverse characteristics, but they can generally considered to have complexity and longevity beyond nearly all other wines in the world. The village has six grand crus: Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and La Grande Rue. While there is monopoly control of four of the six grand crus, the village has at least forty growers sharing its vineyards. The top premier cru includes Les Malconsorts, Cros Parantoux, Les Chaumes, and Clos des Réas.
