Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 41 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Trygve LM on 9/25/2021 & rated 92 points: Celebrating big occasion, and the wine did it's part. Rich. Concentrated. Delicate. Intense. Decanted, very needed due to lots of sediments. First time we had a wine from this castle. Splendid! (2616 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 3/21/2021: Complex nose here, with smoky tones, cedar chest and maybe an iodine note as well. Lighter-bodied on the palate. Given the vintage, this is drinking pretty decently at this point, with a savory finish. No indication of decline here at this time. (2890 views)
Tasted by danielk168 on 12/9/2020 & rated 90 points: tasted blind, no idea it was so old and evn guess new world, an amazing show for a weak vintage, good till the last drop, the cellar must be really good to age so nicely. (3040 views)
Tasted by Anton_Wallin on 7/8/2019 & rated 88 points: Mouth drying tannins, lots green bell pepper, definitely past its peak but still quite enjoyable.
Still yet elegant and classy bit lacks the Grand vin-feeling

This is a weak vintage for sure and I would not have bought this one again (4075 views)
Tasted by Ericsson on 4/5/2019 & rated 90 points: Bordal chez PG (100% Bordeaux) (Collex-Bossy (Genève)): Non chemisée. Jolie couleur grenat, assez brillante et claire. Nez avec des arômes de fruits rouges et de poivrons pour souligner le manque de maturité.
La bouche est néanmoins agréable, le vin est bien vinifié et il fait une belle bouteille légère.
Finale correcte.
A boire . (4373 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 1/21/2018 & rated 88 points: Light and soft, with a core of red berries. Fine acidity, but lacking weight. By now this is past it´s prime so better drink up, still a rather pleasing red bdx, with a fine, mature feeling about it. Feels fragile but elegant. (4711 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 10/8/2017: Popped and poured a sample taste before dinner later today.

Great Bordeaux nose, with a distinct tobacco/cigar box note that is very appealing.

Somewhat dilute on the palate, though - a nice "luncheon claret", with blackberry fruit and good acidity. Given the vintage, still in pretty good shape, but probably a wine best drunk up over the next decade. (3817 views)
Tasted by Ericsson on 7/26/2017 & rated 89 points: Bouteille et bouchon impeccables. Mid neck.
(3910 views)
Tasted by Vinterest Angus on 2/24/2017 & rated 92 points: Disappointing for producer and QPR. very mediocre Bdx. (3820 views)
Tasted by jeffclavier on 10/14/2016 & rated 92 points: Incredibly fresh and green - needs serious decanting to open up. Still. (3725 views)
Tasted by MJohnsen83 on 7/18/2016 & rated 89 points: Took a long time to find out if it was corked. Past its prime but still a great wine. (3124 views)
Tasted by ccn on 4/27/2016 & rated 90 points: Lovely fragrant, typically st Julien nose, tobacco, leather, herbaceous. Didn't really improve appreciably after 1.5 hours in decanter. Very light in mouth, less interesting. Drink up. (2819 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 2/20/2016: Popped & poured; an initial musty note blew off quickly to reveal ripe blackberry fruit and ferrous/iron notes.

Medium-bodied on the palate, slightly dilute but pretty nice, especially when taken in the context of the vintage. Sweet/tart blackberry fruit, and reasonable persistence on the finish. The nose here is more complex than the palate. (2806 views)
Tasted by KeithSurg on 1/25/2016 & rated 93 points: Decanted 2 bottles in succession, with identical notes. Deep, shimmering ruby color. Complex and integrated, with fruit still youthful. Earth, tobacco, and dark fruit flavors, with black pepper on the finish. Oak a little more dominant than expected. Silky mouthfeel. Thanks to Eric for sharing. (2544 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 12/12/2015 & rated 93 points: This keeps being outstanding and might last another10-20 years (certainly longer than me). My score compared to the other 2 I have consumed this year might have been influenced by the fact that it was just waaay more pleasurable than the other 3 wines consumed. I will try not to drink the one remaining for at least a couple of years. (2337 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 7/11/2015 & rated 92 points: Notes mirror those of 2/15/15. really nice wine! (2434 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 2/13/2015 & rated 92 points: Still a nice drinking experience, with floral, red fruit, cedar/pencil shavings, touch of barnyard (on P&P) nose, soft on the palate with red fruit predominating and very little tannins showing. Probably time to drink the rest of mine ssoon. (2566 views)
Tasted by CyroW on 12/6/2014 & rated 92 points: liked it very much that evening, while a light claret, I enjoy very much its balance, its fruits do not show the age of this wine. Friend who shared the bottle with me, thought the wine was too much of a light weight, so i am putting 92 only, otherwise I was ready to grant 93-94. I still find this wine a great value/money proposal. (2675 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 1/14/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby; opaque. Browning slightly. Still has nice legs. Very lovely bouquet; sandalwood, sweet fruit, very feminine and pretty. Red fruit to the fore. In the mouth, it is a round, plump, sweet, fruity wine, with tannins completely resolved. This is drinking beautifully! Amazing for such an unheralded vintage. Almost no sign of decline, though it won't last but a few more years. Fantastic revelation. Only a slight drying on the finish. Wow! 4-13-16-9: 92/100. (3779 views)
Tasted by CyroW on 11/9/2013 & rated 91 points: A bit light but great finesse and balance. (3736 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 5/19/2013 & rated 92 points: Great nose of leather, dark fruit, cedar cigar box, and a little barnyard. Very soft on the palate, nice fruit. Wish I had more than 4 left. (3905 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 4/9/2013 & rated 91 points: Spring Lamb with 20+ Years Old Bordeaux (Portola Kitchen Restaurant, CA): Some brett, leather on the nose. Smooth palate. Nice depth. Tasty! (4419 views)
Tasted by passingshot on 2/24/2013 & rated 90 points: Nose of black currant, cigar, pencil, leather, and earth. It opens up after 2-3 hours in the glass. Good acidity, chocolate, black berry, and a medium finish. Better than I had 5 years ago. Tannin has softened. Should drink now. (3959 views)
(3053 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 6/4/2012 & rated 91 points: Similar to the '91 at the same dinner, but not quite up to that high standard. Same pencil shavings, floral/fruit nose, not as lingering on the finish, but a well made wine with time left for cellaring. (3857 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
