Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by naina8 on 1/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Drinking beautifully. A rich wine , deep yellow, paired incredibly well with a rich lobster pasta. Won’t hold up too much longer. Drink if you have it! (588 views)
Tasted by GUBBIO on 5/2/2022 & rated 93 points: opened, decanted briefly to clean out the bottle and put back in
purchased about 6 years ago from a good caviste in France and stored properly since

robe - as a friend's 10 year old daughter said " it looks like pee"
By just looking at it, I would guess that it was a mid age
sauterne by it's hue - BEAUTIFUL!

nose - This is a delight to smell. The notes coming through are all
across the spectrum ranging from a pineapple , to wet wool, a bit
note of hay and a slight touch of oxidation. SO SO GOOD!

palate - I had this wine a few years back that was from my cellar and
bought at the same time. This bottle had a a bit more freshness
compared to the slight oiliness of the last one. This bottle was
very much more enjoyable and went perfectly with with a
Chicken Tajine. The length was wonderful and the profile was on
point. I almost feel that this wine is more about it's textures and
mouth feel than the taste even though it tastes delicious.
I had commented that this wine is not for beginners. It is not an
easy drinking white wine - it is complex and rich and earthy and
very much a learning experience.

if you have some of these, DO NOT hesitate to open one. I think that it goes well with white meat dishes, with sauces and creams and some spice too. I also think that this will coast for another few years - 2 to 3 but I actually see this at it's peak or darn close depending on how it was stored. Delicious (924 views)
Tasted by ricard on 2/23/2022 & rated 94 points: Deep golden, bronzed colour. Nutty, honeyed, mushroomy nose. Hugely thick and unctuous. Dense, rich, big. Almonds, olive oil, tiny amount of bitterness, which reins in all this opulence. Ageing with elegance. Impressive and serious but not exactly versatile - it's limited because it lacks freshness. It's almost like it's a food in its own right. Baked apple, cinnamon, creme caramel. (1199 views)
Tasted by larseman on 7/16/2020 & rated 85 points: Om vit Hermitage är så här urtrist så är det verkligen inget att sukta efter. (1824 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 7/7/2020 & rated 92 points: This is a gorgeous intense beautifully textured wine, with sack loads of complexity and length. So why the parsimonious score? For my palate it is just a little over the hill - a little old and tired. Enough to put me off opening another bottle in preference for something younger and fresher. There will be those who like the aged elements but it is not for me.

Rich mouthfeel, mango, tangerine, Lady Gray tea. Drink now, hints of caramel oxidation showing through, along with a slight aftertaste. (1740 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 11/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Happy to report that my final bottle was in line with expectation. (2010 views)
Tasted by admid on 8/5/2018: NA (2480 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 6/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Round and sumptuous. Nose of apricot (flesh and kernel) and honeysuckle. Weighty. Maybe I mis-judged this previously as this bottle shows lots of life. (2116 views)
Tasted by erikslettrn on 1/16/2018 & rated 91 points: Clear smoke in both taste and nose. (1839 views)
Tasted by Tony Molester on 1/1/2018: Reading previous TN's, I thought this was ready to open. I thought wrong. This wine probably needs to be revisited again around 2024 at the earliest. There's very little interest atm. It's all texture and taste smacks of oak. It's got little interest.

I suggest revisiting closer to the 20 year mark. I've had transcendent white hermitage and this is not settled yet. Could very well blossom into a memorable wine but we are far from there yet.

Hold to 2024+ before re-assessing.
14% abv (1814 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 12/11/2017 & rated 88 points: Big and languid. Some oxidation but not problematic. Orange, rich scents. Weighty but fairly soft. This surely can't improve any more. (1483 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 4/7/2017 & rated 86 points: SLDS April 2017: Smoke, honey and some wooden notes on the nose. The palate is round and honeyed, with decent acidity and depth of flavour. Feels a little one dimensional and short though. This bottle felt like it should be drunk now. (2335 views)
Tasted by admid on 4/7/2017 & rated 95 points: Dark yellow
Clean and mature nose with very high intensity
Full bodied, low acidity and balanced
Very Good length

Worked fine with king-crab pasta (2004 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 8/20/2015 & rated 92 points: Honey colored, light (+) body
Butter, sweet nectar, lemon grass, honey dew on the nose
Somewhat round, lots of stone fruit, a little spritz, medium(+) finish
Silky, great acidity. Should improve marginally with age.
Drinking close to perfectly right now.
WOW!!!!! VERY impressed!!!!! (3507 views)
Tasted by Kris G on 6/8/2015 flawed bottle: suffers from extreme fast oxidation (3500 views)
Tasted by galenico on 4/10/2015 & rated 88 points: RODANO vs. ITALIA (RISTORANTE TRE GALLI TORINO): Degustato alla cieca. Giallo dorato molto cristallino.
Finale lattiginoso.
Non è proprio il mio vino (4549 views)
Tasted by stewartl on 1/16/2015 & rated 92 points: Fabulous wine. Lemon custard, minerals, graham crackers. Great acidity. Ful bodied. Still has room to grow (3092 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 10/1/2014 & rated 93 points: Deep lemony color.
No oxidation at all. Nose is clean, complex, of medium intensity and classic Hermitage with notes of chamomile, quince, bitter orange, floral honey, with hints of apricot, ginger and a slight nuttiness.
On the palate initial sensation is slightly sharp with notes of green apple but then it reveals its oily character. Nedium weight with clean aftertaste. Classic Chapoutier Hermitage, it only lacks weight and roundness compared to the single vineyard bottlings. (3592 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 2/27/2014 & rated 89 points: WineBerserkers Rhone Tasting; 2/26/2014-2/27/2014 (The Palace, Mission, SF): Golden orange color; oxidative notes, slight caramel; full bodied, rich, oily, classic hermitage blanc texture; med finish. At first I wondered whether this might be a bit oxidized, but I think that is the style. It is nicely balanced and has good depth, but it's just not my style of wine. 88-89 (3601 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 1/5/2014 & rated 88 points: Honied, round and enjoyable. I enjoyed this a little more than the last 2 bottles but it still lacks presence. (2850 views)
Tasted by bertou on 10/3/2013 & rated 90 points: Nice nose with fresh apricots, marzipan, wax, mango and fine mineral notes. Good deepness ans a wine that evolve in the glass.
Powerful mouth, rich. Balance is low but respected. Structure is added by nice bitterness and it gives really nice balance. Beautiful salivating finish that lasts well.
At its peak I think. (3674 views)
Tasted by jkscully on 9/19/2013: This wine has had some surprisingly negative reviews so far, but I really liked it. True, this wine is difficult to match with food, but good pairings are possible and very worth it. The key is, as Goldstein says, a rich, but mild flavor.

This smells to me like sultanas. On the palate, this tastes like sultanas, fig, honey, and tea primarily, but with undertones of apricot, ginger, orange marmalade, macademia nuts, flowers, oil, and even a hint of saline and green apple if I’m looking for it. There is a lot going on here. The finish is, as someone suggested, bitter almond. The finish is long, but it I’m being picky, it could have longer.

Unlike the Chardonnays I just had, this was doing just fine at 7 years. I’m not sure that it would have improved, but it also didn’t taste over ripe. I found it to be just right. (2800 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 1/4/2013 & rated 87 points: Medium deep colour. Blowsy nose, almost like botrytis. Very ripe stone fruit. Oily palate. Medium length. No sign of decay but an eccentric style and one not easy to pair with food. (3673 views)
Tasted by Grant Geyer on 12/25/2012 & rated 85 points: Wine was on the downhilll... very little fruit. (perhaps not store properly prior to my purchsse?) (3080 views)
Tasted by MattTM on 12/8/2012: Holiday dinner at Mel and Sylvia's (Vancouver, BC): Very rich on the nose displaying aromas of lemon oil, some oxidation/nail polish, candied ginger and ground nuts. That oily texture follows through to the palate showing a fair bit of gingerbread spice, baked almonds, oxidized green apples, red apple skins and some orange peel. Plenty of tart tongue numbing acidity and a long length finish ending on notes of oxidized apples and ginger. Enjoyable viscous texture on this that just coats the tongue. Very good+ (3505 views)

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
