Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 159 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ChrisinCowiche on 5/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Shared with Seattle wine group tasting. Possibly the wine of the night but was consumed (quickly) by the group prior to the formal tasting. Delicious and still fresh, young tasting. This one has decades to go. (1684 views)
Tasted by mfimiani47 on 5/6/2023 & rated 94 points: Really beautiful and should drink well for next 5-10 years at least. The Cabernet in the blend keeps everything in check and I agree with some earlier notes that blind this could feel like an extremely well-made Cali cab. A bit less ripe but otherwise all the elements are there and it does feel a bit more new world. Really tasty even though not perhaps the most classic representation (IMO) of a BDX blend from Tuscany.  Tasted by mpechette on 4/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Didn’t decant , poured 2 small glasses and swirled the bottle . Good nose, texture and taste from the start. Finishes as good as it starts. Paired with pasta and red sauce very nicely. It could easily stand up to a ribeye. (1354 views)
Tasted by ragtop on 3/25/2023 & rated 91 points: Beautiful purple with a hint of brown. No tanin. Drinking very well and should keep easily 5-7yrs. (1396 views)
Tasted by WinoD on 3/24/2023 & rated 96 points: Too good! It just jumps out the decanter from the start, you know it's something special, immediately. One of those wines that both new world leaning and old world snobs (guilty) equally appreciate. In a beautiful spot right now - secondary iron/blood/Tuscan slightly underripe tomato things starting to grab the mic from the dark, dense and pure fruits of youth. Nice balance of both. Still sightly wound up at first sip but started singing an hour or so in and for the next two, then slight possible decline... but if you haven't drank most all of it by then, that's on you! Cheers.  Tasted by vpoms on 6/25/2022 & rated 94 points: This wine is perfect now. Very deep garnet color with a powerful nose of mostly secondary and tertiary aromas: tar, dried cherry, toast, mushrooms, earth, bitter chocolate. On the palate: dry, high acidity, high tannins, high alcohol, peasant mouthfeel due to silky smooth body and strong flavors of sour cherry, vanilla, cured meat and chocolate. Very long and satisfying finish lingering on the palate for minutes.Very good wine that can withstand more years in the cellar If I were to taste it blind, in would've thought that this is a very well made, high end California Cab. (2117 views)
Tasted by Macdog on 6/17/2022: Superb and drinking very nicely now. Notes below are a fair spread and representative. I’d say get stuck into this and I suspect that most people that drink this will already be doing so. Inky, silky, dark fruited, Italian power. Great way to end our lunch and sat in the right place at the end of the trio of wines at Goodman. (1870 views)
Tasted by Buhever on 5/9/2022 & rated 95 points: Rich with good dark fruit and herbal notes. This wine it delicious, ready to drink and won't get any better. Drink now. (2057 views)
Tasted by Fred M on 3/6/2022: Drank straight out of the bottle. Superb. (2326 views)
Tasted by rinnocenzi on 2/27/2022 & rated 95 points: Huge italian bordeaux, can hold for 10- 15 years (1980 views)
Tasted by olebaer on 1/1/2022 & rated 92 points: very approachable nose with black fruit, graphite, garden herbs, earthy, wood, masculine and dominant. acidity was well integrated and with soft tannins.
guess it coult be cellared for some more years but don’t think it’s getting better from now.

opened the bottle and poured one glass one hours before tasting against an Alion 2011 (not quite fair) good example of the two different styles (masculine Italy versus elegant Spain)
pairing with boef stroganoff worked well but the Alion performed better because of the acid I guess. (1749 views)
Tasted by Motz on 8/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Tasted over two days, with consistent impressions.

Big and loud! Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with blackcurrant, peppers, and black earth dominate the bouquet and flavor profile. Plummy Merlot comes off somewhat watery and Petit Verdot adds blackberry and mineral elements.

The Tuscan profile, with tomato, tomato leaf, savory herbs, and red loam elements, show prominently. Worn leather and drying tobacco notes enhance the whole.

On the downside, while robust and bold, intrusive alcohol takes a burning toll. Also, given the wine's muscularity, there is an overarching thinness to the liquid.

Fruit has begun to fade, secondary notes abound, and the alcohol masks tertiary accents. Recommend drinking over the next few years. Abysmal QPR. 92-93. (3588 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/30/2021 & rated 92 points: A 65th Birthday Celebration, Slightly COVID Delayed (EL Ideas - Chicago IL): Ripe black cherry and berry with a hint of cigarbox. This seems so modern and fleshy to start, but structure and refinement come through from the middle forward. Good length, finishing with lots of elegance. Good now, with upside. (3398 views)
Tasted by Cipivts on 3/2/2021 & rated 94 points: Fruit forward, elegant, mocha, good balance, very nice (2861 views)
Tasted by owr on 12/18/2020 & rated 89 points: when first opened the wine showed aromas of smoky, dark berries, oak and cedar - heavy on the wood notes. But the wine opened quite nicely, showing off some vanilla, cinnamon, the prerequisite forest floor (hey, it's an old wine) plus some mocha and coffee bean. The tannins, while light on their feet (so to speak), but by the time we hit the 3 hour mark more earthy character started to emerge and the fruit started to dissipate and tannins more astringent. Still a lovely bottle, but it's definitely on the downward slope of life. (2049 views)

Tasted by ruppdavey@yahoo.com on 11/1/2020 & rated 93 points: - Brick color and aromas of blackberry and strawberry jam and has flavours of black currant, blackberry, black pepper and dusty. (2255 views)
Tasted by Get Real on 10/31/2020 & rated 94 points: Great mouthfeel, rich with real complexity and a long finish. Incredibly smooth tannins. Took an hour or so to fully open up. In addition to the normal flavours it had a flavour note I couldn’t place but which was enjoyable (2021 views)
Tasted by KenK on 6/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Served blind along with 2005 Dominus and 2005 Montrose. This showed a touch lighter and more acid driven, yet strong backbone of tasty black fruits and spices. Very solid showing and after 15 years begging to show some nuance vs primary fruits. (2610 views)
Tasted by rougeamore on 2/23/2020 & rated 95 points: Drank this with the '05 Solaia and Sassicaia. This was ever so slightly preferred by a number of people in our group. Very aromatic with blackberry and black currant on the nose. Fruit forward flavor with dark berries and spice with a long lingering finish. A joy to drink with friends. (2693 views)
Tasted by GQG on 2/10/2020 & rated 94 points: In a good place right now... red cherry and raspberry, tobacco, leather, and earth on the palate. Soft textures, full mouthfeel, nice depth and complexity, dusty spice, and smooth tannins lead to a long and delicious finish.

PnP, did not decant. (2746 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 12/13/2019 & rated 95 points: A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot aged for 18 months in French oak barriques (70% new), the 2005 Ornellaia retains a youthful deep ruby robe. Packed with wild berry fruit, fig, cocoa, truffle, licorice and spicy oak, it is a full-bodied, ripe, fruit-forward wine with medium acidity, nicely integrated alcohol (14.5%), well-woven alcohol and plentiful fine-grained tannins. Dense on the mid-palate, it goes on to close with a lengthy smooth finish. Tasted in double-blind fashion, I guessed this to be a youthful Napa Cabernet or Napa Bordeaux-style blend. Well-cellared bottles of this hedonistic elixir will last longer than originally predicted by the pundits. Drink now-2035. (2732 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 8/16/2019 & rated 96 points: Decanted and served. This bottle showed young and powerful with a fabulous balance of acid, earth, and macerated fruit. It seems to be in a peak window right now and it's hard to imagine being disappointed. Too bad it's my last bottle! (3284 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Ornellaia

In 1994 something significant happened for Ornellaia and many of the highest quality wines from Bolgheri in Tuscany. After years of laboring under the humble 'Vino da Tavola' label, these wines were granted a new and unprecedented DOC which not only permitted, but mandated non-traditional Italian grapes. From the 1994 vintage on, Ornellaia has used the DOC Bolgheri Rosso Superiore. [TermOrnellaia (Read more about Ornellaia classification on CellarTracker)].
