Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by galewskj on 12/13/2020 & rated 93 points: The wine is 15.8%, it has a big profile, relatively traditional with red fruit, savory tomato and vegetable, dried earth, bramble, and there is a slight feel of alcohol on the finish. There was great complexity here and re-affirmed my respect for Arrowood. Overall, the wine performed above my expectation. (795 views)
Tasted by BoulderWine on 4/27/2018 & rated 88 points: Took to Valette. Decanted for 90 minutes before drinking. Big and brawny with a dark fruit profile. Still a bit rough on the finish. Improved a bit by the end of the meal. I had not realized that this was a 15.8% alc wine, which IMHO is just too high for a Cab to age well. (1117 views)
Tasted by LJT on 10/19/2014 & rated 90 points: Rich, dark and fruity. Needed time to open and soften. Opened at 5:00pm and drank the last taste at 8:00pm. It was still strong, but more balanced. (2165 views)
Tasted by magic2coop on 11/24/2012: Very delicious. Still opaque purple with slight bricking at edge. Matches Lora's nail polish. Smells of turkey broth and rose bowl turf. Tastes wet. Tannins dry out the wetness. (3265 views)
Tasted by Isdaddy on 11/10/2012 & rated 91 points: Drank with friends at the end of a long evening. Nice rich fruit, cassis, and oak. Mellow tannins. Full bodied. Enjoyed. (2478 views)
Tasted by Pluecht on 6/17/2012 & rated 92 points: Full body, silky tannins, big fruit, hint of oak in the background. 30 second finish. (2219 views)
Tasted by westcoastwannabe on 1/14/2012 & rated 91 points: Impressive cab which is drinking very well now. Dark intense fruit, a slight hint of oak, and nice complexity. A great lasting finish. (2087 views)
Tasted by Snoman on 1/23/2010 & rated 94 points: BIG surprise on this one. Laid away for a few years, this has integrated and become exceptionally complex, with a nose of black fruit and tobacco, a palate of blackberry, blueberry, leather and cigar box, some smoke and just a hint of rustic earth, and finishes with a long and pleasant reminder of just how good this wine has become. Every bit as good or better than the Special Reserve version. (2709 views)
Tasted by gdykema on 7/10/2009 & rated 94 points: Oak and smoke. Super concentrated, very dry. Long finish, a refined wine. (1948 views)
Tasted by BoulderWine on 4/17/2009 & rated 90 points: Not in a good place right now. Tasted great at the winery back in December but not coming together right now. Nice fruit and mocha flavors but tough and tannic. I would wait a couple more years on this. Last week I tasted a 2002 Louis Martini Monte Rosso Cab that was very delicious so perhaps that is an age indicator? (1946 views)
Tasted by mmyette on 5/3/2008 & rated 93 points: This was nice. Deep garnet color, nose was of mocha and dark raspberry. The palate was pure pleasure, if not overly complex. There was cassis, berry fruit, with hints of vanilla oak. finish was moderate. A pure pleasure drinker, not overly structured. Compared to a 2004 Cliff Lede Stag's leap, was a push. (2188 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
