Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 12/7/2022 & rated 93 points: Retail $125. According to Robert Parker, this 2002 "was blended with small quantities of Merlot and Petit Verdot." According to Elizabeth Vianna, who was assistant winemaker for this vintage, it was a fairly typical vintage and the wine expressed it well. Now, more than twenty years out, the wine was a bit closed on the nose but still evocative, even amazing with dark plum, black cherry, and cassis shyly presenting themselves. The palate is surprisingly fruity, given the age, and also spicy, earthy, and bit tannic on the finish. Lovely. 93.

Tasted by COWine-Oh on 2/27/2022 & rated 82 points: Past it’s prime. Some cassis on the nose but not much fruit at all. Thought there might be some tertiary flavors not really any there maybe a bit of cedar after 30 minutes. On the palate, acidity dominates no tannins or fruit to speak of. Could be bottle variation? Can’t say as I don’t have another to compare.

A recent 2002 insignia was very good so shouldn’t be the vintage. (704 views)
Tasted by chatters on 7/15/2020: Napa Tasting (Bistro Cocotte, Haberfield): Blackcurrant, sweet spice, cream, vanilla, very slight cedar. Juicy, fleshy, blackcurrant and plum with a fair lick of alcohol underpinning, tannins are quite contained making this wine softly engaging plummy notes on the finish. it's perfectly pleasant but, after this line up, perhaps a little bland.  Tasted by danseng on 10/14/2018 & rated 93 points: Really in great shape at 16 years. Could probably go another 5 but really enjoyable now. Dark fruits and still a good bit of tannis. Wish I had more. (1986 views)
Tasted by daved on 7/5/2018 & rated 94 points: strong showing at 16 years, big red fruit smooth through and through. (1903 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 10/28/2016 & rated 90 points: Dinner at a friends, first time with this wine. Surprised to the upside. PnP, drank over 30 minutes.

Dark garnet color, not signs of bricking. Black fruit, cassis, earth, touch of graphite, mild oak. Medium weight and finish. Drinking well, but likely towards the end of its prime, would drink over next couple years (3226 views)
Tasted by squirrelrun on 4/19/2016: Delicious with rib eye. Just at end of tasting period. (3381 views)
Tasted by wsmith84 on 2/6/2016 & rated 93 points: Nearing the end of its prime-wouldn't go another year. Drank amazingly well. Strong fruit forward, Jammy, beautiful dry finish which shows it last age. Enjoy! (3116 views)
Tasted by Bberardini on 6/19/2015 & rated 89 points: silky. Probably could age another 2 years. (3089 views)
Tasted by MrD on 5/9/2015: Fabulous Saad to see it go. Best bottle yet. (2866 views)
Tasted by juicejammer on 4/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Purchased winery direct. PNP from a 1.5. Served at 55 degrees. Medium Ruby with no bricking. Fresh and juicy with red currant and plum. Dried sage and mint carry the mid palate to a clean toboacco leaf finish. Drink -2020 (1623 views)
Tasted by Vabene on 12/13/2014 & rated 92 points: I was amazed how both the color and fruit remained after so long (this was my last bottle of the 2002). We waited about 20 minutes for it to open up, and then what a fantastic surprise! (We had opened up our last bottle of the 1997 CR Cab two nights earlier, and that wine had lost most of it's flair, so we weren't sure what to expect from this one) (1627 views)
Tasted by Lax4 on 11/28/2014 & rated 91 points: Flavorful Cabernet with a fantastic taste beginning to end. Decanted for 1 hour and wine became better with time. (752 views)
Tasted by MrD on 11/27/2014: Cork disintegrated as I pulled it. Strained and decanted. Mellow dark fruits. I'm still loving this wine but dad preferred the Cakebread we also opened that night. (1465 views)
Tasted by hoops92 on 2/15/2014 & rated 92 points: Classic napa cab. Tannins have mellowed, still stands up to a steak. Cassis, black fruits, typical solid Chimney Rock product. (1906 views)
Tasted by dstraub on 8/14/2013 & rated 94 points: This was a 1.5L, but I was shocked how good it was given its age. I wish I would have purchased about 3 more. (2460 views)
Tasted by MoreWinePlease on 12/3/2012 & rated 91 points: My last bottle. Still rich, fat and sassy but the sweet sappy, black cherry/walnut flavors make themselves known. (3064 views)
Tasted by MoreWinePlease on 11/13/2012 & rated 92 points: Well stored, Popped and poured and likely at peak. Such a consistent maker, year after year, this offers up a classic rich Napa nose of black fruits/cassis, light creamy oak nuances that easily slide/glide along the gullet to a rich and satisfying finish, with or without food. Everything in harmony from an excellent year. I've never had a bad vintage of ChimneyRock SLD, nor a bad bottle. (2823 views)
Tasted by MrD on 10/20/2012 & rated 93 points: Best bottle we've had yet. Might have been the situation but it was excellent. (2654 views)
Tasted by MrD on 8/29/2012 & rated 92 points: Loving it! (2362 views)
Tasted by MrD on 7/19/2012 & rated 91 points: As enjoyable as ever. (1896 views)
Tasted by keepitreal on 6/24/2012 & rated 88 points: Huge, inky, licorice & toothpick, plum vanilla and sweet candy. Not my bag, but drinking fine for what it is. (1427 views)
Tasted by MrD on 5/5/2012 & rated 91 points: Pulled the cork and saw a crystalline deposit on the cork. Dad really liked it. Dark fruits and mellow tannins. (1519 views)
Tasted by Adalbert on 11/4/2011 & rated 95 points: Remarkablewine, big oak, blackberries. (2459 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
